Tomorrow’s oil production is sunnySolar generated process steam for EOR – ecological, economical, future-oriented
Solarlite CSP technology – sophisticated and efficient Solarlite CSP Technology GmbH, from the German federal state of Mecklen-
burg-Western Pomerania, designs and builds solar thermal parabolic trough
power stations (concentrated solar power) and process heat plants. For the
first time worldwide, Solarlite is using direct steam generation commercially
in a power plant.
Solar thermal facilities offer the most sustainable form of energy recovery in
terms of the environment, resources and availability. The technology has the
advantage that as direct solar radiation increases, so does the efficiency of the
facilities. The facilities are also characterised by a high degree of flexibility.
They can be combined with all other fossil and renewable energy sources and
are thus base-load capable. Another plus is the option of producing electricity
and process heat at the same time or independently of one another.
In addition, the residual heat can be used for further industrial applications for
example desalination and cooling.
» The technology has a broad range of applications. The flexibility and the simple integration into
existing facilities can make a substantial contribution to accelerating the switch to a global energy
supply using renewable energy. «

Solarlite CSP Technology uses parabolic
troughs to generate steam for Enhanced
Oil Recovery in the Arab Gulf states.
How an oil company is increasing oil production and saving energy costs at the same time :An international oil production company faces the peak of production rate
in one oil field in the Arabian Peninsula soon. In order to keep up the oil
production rates the company decides to invest in Enhanced Oil Recovery
(EOR) technology by injecting steam and extend the field’s lifetime. Along
with thermal EOR goes a significantly increased energy demand and hence
further environmental impacts. Due to the constant high oil price the
investment in EOR is economically attractive anyway.
The requirements of the company
The additional annual energy for the EOR system amounts to around
898 GWh thermal. The thermal energy is provided by using steam boilers
with a total capacity of 216 t / h. The once-through-boilers are fired by using
imported liquefied natural gas and supply saturated steam at 284 °C
( 68 bar ). With 7,884 operating hours per year, gas consumption amounts
to 115,356,164 m3, which equates to 67,200 TUSD annual costs for gas
requirement. The high energy demand and direct solar radiation at the
oilfield location in mind, the oil company wants to adapt the EOR techno-
logy concept in the long term. The use of solar energy is at the top of the
list. The objective is to achieve a solar share of up to 25 %. Concentrated
solar parabolic trough technology based on direct steam generation pro-
vides the steam quality which fulfills the requirements of the oil industry.
Simple integration guarantees a constant and stable oil production.
The “bulletproof” construction and its robust components exactly match
the needs of the oil industry.
A simple solar steam solution lowers the costs substantially
In order to be able to supply full steam output at any given time, the solar
share should amount of up to 25 % of the boiler capacity. 288 CSP collec-
tors will be used to provide the solar steam output of around 162.5 t / h.

Simple integration
The solar facility with its 288 collectors
will be established on an open area next
to the oil field. This requires 427,351 m2
of space. The solar facility is integrated
into the existing main steam distribution
in parallel to the steam boiler.
