CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish May 26, 2013 Solemnity of the MOST HOLY TRINITY “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, We often say, “Things happen in three’s.” Normally, we say this in reference to things like accidents, deaths, and mishaps. When something bad happens, it might be tempting to be a little superstitious and expect that a couple more problems await! Our experience often seems to give credence to this belief. It seems natural, then, to associate three of something as being related to something negative. However, there is good support to say that the significance of the number “three” is predominantly related to good things. Let’s take a look at a couple of examples. When trying to accomplish something, we may fail twice, and then get it on the third try. If that’s the case, we say, ‘Third time’s a charm’! It is interesting to note that this phrase may likely have as it’s precursor in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Letters addressed to R. H. Home, in 1839, where she writes, “The luck of the third adventure’ is proverbial. She may be quoting an already familiar saying. Three is also a good number when rolling dice or playing the slot machine. It is therefore considered to be a lucky number. Where its association with luck comes from is uncertain. One theory suggests that it stems from English law whereby, anyone who survives three attempts at hanging would be set free. It is unlikely that this is based on fact. More probably, the connection of the number with luck is from a folk belief that one should persevere when experiencing setbacks. The phrase ‘try, try and try again‘ conveys this. Two times doesn’t seem to be enough and four seems too much to try to overcome a task. As Christians, we do not believe in luck. We also do not superstitiously believe that things just happen in three’s. We do, however, believe in the providence of God, who has revealed himself to us as a Trinity of persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In scripture, the number three is always associated with divinity. Three is symbolic of God’s action in the world. In the Book of Genesis, the Lord appeared to Abraham as three visitors. The passage from Genesis 18:2 reads, “Looking up, he saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them . . .” This is one of the early hints at the revelation of the Triune God. Of course, an earlier suggestion of the Trinity is found in Genesis, when God created the world. Here, God speaks and things come into existence. As we discover later in the

Dear Friends,

We often say, “Things happen in three’s.” Normally, we say this in reference to things like accidents, deaths, and mishaps.

Gospel of John, Jesus is the Word through whom all things were made. In Genesis, we also see that a ‘mighty wind’ swept over the waters. This points to the presence of the Holy Spirit in the creation of the world.

The Triune God is more explicitly revealed in Matthew 28:19, where Jesus commissions the disciples to go forth and baptize in “the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The Gospel of John today, also speaks of the unity of the Trinity. What belongs to one, belongs to all three persons of the Trinity.

God has revealed himself as a Trinity of persons. The life of the Trinity is present in our lives by virtue of our baptism. The supernatural life of the Trinity has made its home within us. The Trinity lives and moves within us calling us to holiness. Can there be anything better than this? Certainly, this impacts our lives in inexpressible ways that far surpass our understanding. Good things are ours because the three persons of the Trinity dwell within. May this Trinity Sunday heighten our awareness of this life that is ours.

God bless,

More details will come soon.

School NewsBy Principal Kathy Clark

This past week was our last full week of school. It was a memorable one that was filled with end-of-school parties, the last Manner of the Month outing, a PTO meeting, a field day, a school picnic and a volleyball game between the faculty and the sixth graders.

One of the parties was for the members of our Student Council that consists of 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. I always brag on them because they are one of the best elementary student councils in town. They not only do things for the school, but also for the community. Most all of our service projects come from the ideas generated by the Student Council members who organize and carry the ideas through to completion. Because of their efforts, we have clothing drives for the Mother Theresa Shelter and Timon’s Ministries, food drives for Catholic Charities, and we collect canned goods and cook meals for the residents of Ronald McDonald House. The sponsors are our 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Stovall and 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Urbis. These ladies do a great job of teaching leadership skills and instilling a spirit of service in our students. Thanks, Mrs. Stovall and Mrs. Urbis!

One of our activities this past week was a “Move-Up Day” where students in K-3 through 5th grade were given the opportunity to visit their next year’s teacher and classroom. The children were excited and eager to learn what is in store for them in August when they return to school. The 6th graders moved “down” to K-3 and visited with their teacher, Mrs. Ramos, and aide, Ms. Terry. Four of the students have been at St. Pius since K-3: Toby Johnson, Matthew Lutz, Jacob Lugo and Kayla Kenyon. All of the 6th graders had fun sitting in the tiny chairs at the computer center, and visiting the various activity centers in the room. Kayla was able to put on the pink dress that she used to wear in the home center! It made them all realize how much they have grown through the years! We will certainly miss these students next year.

We had our final Manner of the Month at Jason’s Deli on Wednesday. Thanks to parishioners Bob and Sue Becquet, our children get rewarded for using good manners. They have sponsored this program for many years now. Thanks again, Bob and Sue!

The field day and school picnic on Friday and the results of the volleyball game will have to be reported in next week’s bulletin since this column is written before then. It will be this principal’s last school report since I will be retiring at the end of June.

This coming week will be a short one for us. We will return after Memorial Day to end the school year with our graduations and awards ceremonies on Tuesday and Wednesday. After that, the teachers will close up their classrooms and begin a long-awaited summer vacation. It has been the fastest moving school year on record!

Have a blessed week!
