Solstice @ The University of Iowa

Solstice is wireless collaboration software [via a Solstice device] for meeting and learning environments that enables users to easily share content from their laptop, mobile device, or tablet to an in-room display.

• The Solstice device connects to the in-room flat panel or projector and network to facilitate wireless presentations and/or collaborative content sharing

• Using Solstice software, any number of connected users may share unlimited content in “Open Collaboration” mode

• By default, Solstice sessions work in “Open Collaboration” mode, allowing all participants to control content and layout; “Moderator” mode allows specific participants to control content, layout and view basic user details

• All shared content is encrypted when it is sent to Solstice

• Participants can use their mobile devices to wirelessly point to content and/or sketch a temporary mark-up on the display [only mobile devices have this capability]

• Available in over 225 University of Iowa classroom/meeting/conference spaces & counting

To get started, install the Solstice application on any device to share/display content wirelessly. Solstice is available for Android, iOS, iPadOS, Microsoft Windows and MacOS.

• For smart phones and tablets, download the Solstice app from an app store

• For departmental computers and devices, please contact ITS Help Desk

• For laptops, input the IP address found on the screen. Follow the prompt to download the software

• Open a web browser and type the IP address from the Solstice screen

[NOTE: if you encounter a “Not Secure Connection” notification, change “https” to “http”, or use advanced settings to continue

• Follow the prompt to Get the App & Join

• Open downloaded file

Before using Solstice, connect to eduroam wireless network [Solstice is not compatible with “UI Guest” network].

Please note, guests without access to the eduroam wireless network, may require guest HawkID access; please contact ITS Help Desk to request a guest HawkID well in advance of visit

• Once Solstice is installed, run the app

• Use the “Enter IP” tab to enter the IP address found on the presentation screen, then press Go

• Enter four-digit security “Key” from presentation screen, then press Ok

• When finished, remember to Disconnect from the Solstice app before leaving!

Any number of connected users may share unlimited content and all content shared is encrypted when it is sent to the Solstice device.

• When connected choose what content to “Share”

• The “Mirror Screen” option for iOS requires “Airplay Mirroring” to be active [swipe up/down & press AirPlay

Mirroring] then select room/session & enter four-digit security “Key” from screen*

*Audio will only be shared when selecting the “Desktop” sharing or “Mirror Screen” options [MacOS users may be

prompted to install an audio driver the first time they enable audio]

*Any content protected by copyright will not broadcast from your device to the Solstice-connected display

• Mobile devices have the capability to share camera and capture videos

Use the “Layout” screen to arrange content.

• Move posts on/off the “On-deck panel”

• Click & hold [right-click] on specific shared content brings up options for, “full screen,” “create stack”, or to “delete” that content

Use the “Meeting” screen to access “Moderator” mode.

• Moderator approves participants & shared content and may appoint additional moderators

Mobile devices only, press and hold the red INK dot to temporarily markup display.

• “INK” allows temporary markup or use as a pointer
