IBM has been primarily on a Partnering Strategy in Midrange
Collaborative OEM - More than traditional OEM relationships
Has enabled IBM to focus investments on high end disk and software
Overall this strategy has been fairly successful
But…..Client’s Midrange requirements have been shif ting
Had been primarily Price/Performance and Ease-of-Use
Now more emphasis on:
● Enterprise Attributes ● Ease of use
● Software Features - Advanced functions
● Application Integration
IBM has been delivering these attributes packaging SVC & DS

Understanding SAS 2.0 “Wide” Ports
• Each SAS lane is 6-Gbps• Path to drives is a single lane
• “x4 wide” creates 4 lanes in a single connector
• Lanes 2, 3 and 4 are “overflow” when concurrent I/Os overloadthe previous channel
A single SAS 2.0 port delivers up to 24Gb/s throughput

How does Storwize V7000 manage internal disk
No more LUN definition in RAID Group
System automatically defines RAID Group● Use of presets based on customer requirements
(performance, capacity)
● Traditional RAID level available (RAID 0,5,6,10)
Entire RAID Group capacity assigned to Storage Pool● Storage pool based on a single or several RAID
Groups
Volumes are defined at Storage Pool level● A volume is stripped equally in the pool● Volume Real size is limited to Pool Size (unlimited)
Workload is balanced over all HDD in a Storage Pool, A si ngle volume access all system resources
1/ No more RAID/HDD hot spot
2/ No stripping required at server level

Features: EfficiencyThin provisioning
More productive use of available storage.
Works across all supported host platforms and all supported external storage systems.
Performance optimization
Without thin provisioning, pre-allocated
space is reserved whether the
application uses it or not.
With thin provisioning, applications can
grow dynamically, but only consume space
they are actually using.
Dynamic
growth
 Analyze system performance and throughput.
Transparently rearrange the data to eliminate hot-spots and balance utilization of all components.Hot-spots due to poor data layout Optimized performance and throughput
Transparentreorganization
Busiest data extents are identified and automatically relocated to highest performing Solid State Drives
Remaining data extents can take advantage of higher capacity, price optimized drivesHot-spots due to poor data layout Optimized performance and throughput

The I/O Monitor captures access patterns and generates usage statistics sending them to the Data Placement Advisor
The Data Placement Advisor identifies hot spots and outputs potential data migrations to the Data Migration Planner
The Data Migration Planner performs analysis to deliver recommended data migration plan to the Data Migrator based on the physical storage characteristics
Data Migrator confirms and schedules data migration activity based on the data migration plan using SVC function to seamlessly relocate the data to higher performing storage without any application interruption
A “hot spot ” is formed on a magnetic disk when an application makes frequent use of the same area or extent of a volume
