Mount Fuji is a volcano. It’s 3,776 metres high and it’s about 100 kilometres south of Tokyo. It’s a very beautiful volcano with snow at the top, and you can see it in a lot of traditional Japanese pictures. There are five lakes near Mount Fuji and visitors to these lakes have a great view of the volcano. There is also a forest at the base of the volcano. There are lots of stories about ghosts and other supernatural creatures in the forest – but the forest is still a popular place for walking. Mount Fuji is very popular with climbers – about 300,000 people climb the volcano every year. They usually do it in July or August. It’s better to climb at night because then you get to the top when the sun is coming up. It’s a very beautiful view. From October to May, the climb is more dangerous because the weather is much worse.

I visited Tokyo with my husband last August and we went on a day trip to Mount Fuji. We left the hotel in the morning after breakfast and travelled to Fuji by bus. We didn’t climb the volcano, but the bus took us part of the way up. We had lunch on Mount Fuji – a traditional Japanese meal. Then in the afternoon, we went to one of the lakes near Mount Fuji – Lake Ashi – and went on a boat trip on the lake. From the lake, you get a beautiful view of Fuji. In the evening, we went back to Tokyo by train – it’s one of the fastest trains in the world, so it didn’t take very long. It was a fantastic day – the best day of the holiday, in my opinion.

First of all – walking. Exmoor is the perfect place to go walking. There are over 1,000 kilometres of walks through woods and valleys, beside lakes, and along beaches. The best thing is that it’s free – you just need to bring strong walking shoes and lots of water to drink. The Exmoor National Park website has a fantastic list of guided walks.Exmoor is also great for cycling. There are lots of cycling maps for easy and more difficult routes. There are also many organised cycling groups that you can join. Just remember to ride slowly because of walkers and horses!And finally, climbing. I went climbing for the first time yesterday and it was a great experience. There are a number of outdoor centres in the national park. Their climbing instructors can help you to climb if you are a beginner like me, or to improve your climbing skills. You have to follow all the safety advice and learn to use the equipment, but it’s exciting! Exmoor is perfect for climbers. It has some of the highest sea cliffs for climbing in the UK. So, there is something for everyone. It’s really beautiful here and I can recommend it for all the family! Back to you in the studio, Jenny.

My name’s Shelley and I’m Australian. I’m married and I’ve got a son. I decided to find out about our family history. I’m very interested in the early history of Australia – I think it’s fascinating. And I wanted to find out if we’re descendants of British prisoners!I found out that my family came to Australia from Britain in 1860. But Britain stopped sending prisoners to Australia in 1840. So my family weren’t prisoners. I was a bit disappointed … Then I looked at my husband’s family. I found that my husband’s great-great-great-great grandparents met in Sydney and got married there in 1826. It was their home for the next forty years. His name was John Bullen and she was Mary Evans. He was a thief and she was the daughter of a thief! I was very interested! I found out more about John Bullen. John was a poor boy from London. He lived on the streets and stole food to eat. The police caught him and they sent him here to Australia for fourteen years. But John met Mary and they stayed here and started a family. And here is my son now – his descendant – 200 years later!

1 Gary I’ve just been to Europe for the first time. I went backpacking with my friend Ian. We travelled around, mostly by train, sometimes by bus and once by scooter! We got scooters in Greece and drove round the island of Andros. It was fantastic but a bit dangerous at times!
2 Sandie We’ve just been to the USA to visit my mum’s sister in Florida. The holiday was amazing, but I hated the journey. I went on a plane for the first time, and I really didn’t like it. It was worse flying back because I knew what to expect!
3 Felix I’ve been to Spain before, but this year I travelled there by ship for the first time. We drove to the coast in England and put the car on the ship. The journey to Santander took twenty hours. It was OK until we reached the Bay of Biscay. Then I was really sick! It was awful!
4 Sophia In the summer holidays we usually go to Italy to visit my dad’s family in Pisa. We drive through France to get there. It takes a couple of days, and I hate the journey. But this year I went by plane by myself! It was wonderful. I felt so grown up.
5 Luke I’m not keen on travelling, except on my motorbike. I’ve travelled all over the country on it. I usually take my girlfriend and we go to concerts and festivals. We take our tent and we take our time getting there. It’s so relaxing. It’s the only way to travel.
