Specifying the correct floor is a complex decision, balancing current and future performance criteria against cost and installation time constraints. A well specified floor will lead to a brighter, cleaner, safer and more attractive and efficient working environment. Choosing the wrong type of floor can lead to personal injuries, lost production and premature failure resulting in frequent maintenance or early replacement.

Specifying the Right Flooring

Why Choose a Flooring System from BASF?With global turnover in excess of €70 billion, BASF Construction Chemicals is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction chemicals, our knowledge and experience in chemistry and concrete technology is unrivalled. When choosing BASF as your supplier, you have the confidence that comes from specifying eading brands and technologies that are repeatedly specified by multi-national Blue Chip companies, and have been for over forty years.

Ucrete® Heavy Duty Polyurethane Flooring

MasterTop® Epoxy Resin Flooring Systems MasterTop® Resilient Polyurethane Floor Finishes MasterTop® Dry Shake Floor Toppings

Floors for Every ApplicationOur flooring systems are designed to meet the most exacting physical or chemical resistance needs. Performance characteristics can include a slip-resistant surface, steam cleanability and resistance to thermal shock, providing added safety in wet chemical and food processing environments. These easy to maintain seamless products are also available in static conductive grades for controlled work environments.

For offices, shops, institutions and laboratories, BASF has a range of decorative floor finishes which can replace resilient, ceramic or stone floors in public areas.

Where aesthetics alone are the specification criteria, BASF has innovative new flooring systems to satisfy the most demanding architect or designer. An almost infinite variety of effects can be achieved through the use of carefully selected aggregates, or by encapsulating objects or illustrations beneath protective resin coatings, which makes these systems ideal for Banks, Leisure Facilities, Prestige Retailers and Corporate Headquarters.

screeds, may be based on a variety of resin binder systems. Most common are epoxy traditional polyurethane andheavy-duty polyurethane systems. These resin types have different combinations of properties that need to be understood to get the best system for a particular application.

Whatever the nature of your facility, BASF can help you to make the right flooring choice. It has a fundamental understanding of concrete and the latest admixture technology as well as an unrivalled track record in the production of durable flooring systems. The specifier should expect a totally integrated approach to the design and installation of flooring at every stage of the process – and BASF can meet these demands.

Underlayment and Levelling Screeds

In many instances there is a requirement for infill materials to repair damaged substrates, to correct levels and tolerances, or to provide falls to drain, for example, prior to the application of a MasterTop® or Ucrete® floor finish.

Starting at the base, the design and details of the substrate concrete is important and often the most overlooked part of the long term performance of floor finishes. It is the concrete base that supports the static loads and provides the structural integrity of the resin relatively thin surface, that protects the concrete from abrasion and chemical attack. Here, the correct use of admixtures can help to achieve the concrete mix design. When new concrete floors are being installed, dry shake floor toppings can be applied directly to the freshly laid concrete, where they cure monolithically as an integral part of the floor slab. Dry shakes are much more durable than normal concrete because of their high aggregate abrasion values (AAVs) and can enhance the appearance through a range of colours and light reflective finishes.Where cementitious floors are simply not good enough because of chemical spillages, cleanliness, hygiene or aesthetic reasons, a synthetic resin flooring system may be required.

These systems, from thin coatings to heavy-duty

Dry Shake Flooring Systems are characterised by the application of the dry powder to the surface of freshly laid concrete.

Cementitious Dry ShakeMasterTop® 100/200/450

The special hydraulic cements and powerful workability aids in the powder, release moisture from the concrete. This results in the material hardening at a very low water-cement ratio, monolithically with the base concrete, creating an integral and extremely hard-wearing surface.Dry Shake Flooring Systems are extremely cost effective as they are installed with the main floor slabs by the same concrete flooring contractor. Since there is no separate installation process they have no effect on the programming of a project. MasterTop

® Dry Shake Floors provide polished,

coloured floors which are very long lasting, even in aggressive environments such as narrow aisle and high bay warehousing.Compared to standard concrete the use of coloured or light reflective floors can brighten up a workspace, reduce lighting costs and provide an attractive and efficient working environment. The metal aggregated MasterTop

® 200 provides tough

floor, the iron aggregates annealing under load to produce maximum abrassion resistance.MasterTop

® 100 uses quartz aggregates which

produces the cleanest colours for maximum brightness and light reflectance.

Areas of ApplicationAutomotive assembly plants, heavy engineering workshops, machine tool shops, foundries and furnace areas, paper mills, printing shops, aircraft hangars and workshops, tracked vehicle manufacture and traffic areas, high bay warehousing and distribution.

MasterTop® 450 is the compromise using corundum

aggregates to produce very robust floors in a range of colours. Wherever chemicals that would attack cementitious materials, including acids, sugars, food products and salts, etc., are to be encountered, resin floor systems should be considered as an alternative.

Solvent-Free Epoxy Flooring SystemsMasterTop® 1200

The solvent-free epoxy resin systems are the general purpose seamless floor finishes used in all dry process, assembly, packing and storage applications. They may be installed in a wide range of thicknesses with a variety of surface textures and decorative finishes available.

The natural appearance is high gloss, which facilitates cleaning and decontamination. If required, a matt wash is available to reduce reflective glare.

In normal engineering, assembly and warehouse applications a MasterTop

® 1200 floor provides

a bright and colourful floor that is seamless, non-porous and non-dusting. It has good resistance to mineral oils, including skydrol and to dilute acids and alkalis. These same properties make the MasterTop

® 1200 systems hygienic and easy

to clean, ideally suited to dry process, technical and storage areas in pharmaceutical and food production facilities for example.

In refurbishment applications, the wide range of thickness which can be installed greatly facilitates the repair and making good of old damaged substrates. MasterTop

® 1240 is often used to

dub out holes and correct levels prior to the application of the chosen floor finish.

13Solutions for flooring

Ucrete®

Temperature Resistant FlooringThe unique Ucrete® heavy duty polyurethane resin systems do not start to soften until temperatures of 120°C are exceeded. Most other resin flooring materials soften at temperatures in the region 50°C – 60°C. Together with the high resilience of Ucrete® floors, this enables them to withstand high temperatures and extreme thermal shock conditions. Ucrete® industrial flooring is able to withstand routine and regular discharges of boiling water.

It is clear that in extreme thermal shock environments a good quality well designed substrate is required. In particular the potentially large thermal movements of the substrate must be allowed for.

Over 25 years of serviceIn 1984, the Magor production facility, a major UKbeverage supplier, installed 2800 m2 of Ucreteflooring in their kegging hall (opposite and left). More than 25 years later, the floor is still in service, as you can see in these in these photographs. The floor takes hot water and chemical spillage under the keg washers as well as the impact from the occasional keg that manages to escape. With the line filling up to 1000 barrels per hour round the clock, it is clear that stopping is not an option. The huge cost of closing this plant to replace the floor far outweighs any extra cost in having a quality Ucrete floor in the first place. Since this floor was installed, the production facility has used many thousands of meters of Ucrete floors. Not surprisingly, it continues to do so today.

Anti Static Conductive FlooringMore and more processes in the electronics, pharmaceutical, engineering, chemical and other industries must be carried out in highly controlled, clean and electrically stable conditions. A most important aspect of these special work environments is the provision of engineered floor systems with the required ability to safely dissipate unwanted static electricity.

Reducing the generation of electrostatic charge It is important that any charge is able to dissipate safely. However, avoiding the generation of static charge in the first place is the preventative measure that provides maximum safety.

The extent to which a floor coating contributes to the accumulation of electrostatic charge depends on the type of traffic to which the floor is exposed, whether pedestrian or wheeled.

Where static charge accumulates on personnel, a number of factors need to be considered. Friction between footwear and floor when walking, friction between clothes and chair when sitting, and the friction of moving clothing can all generate a static charge.

It is possible to reduce the potential of generated charges using floor finishes from BASF. A comprehensive test with conductive footwear under precise conditions of humidity and temperature will allow the optimum combination of floor/footwear to be selected.

The need to control static electricityThe major risks associated with the accumulation of electrostatic charge are the effects produced by electrostatic discharge (ESD). The transfer of charges from one material to another can have detrimental effects:•

• •

The control of unwanted static is achieved by the use of dissipative or conductive materials that are connected to the earth. The best results are obtained using conductive floor finishes.BASF offers a range of flooring systems with conductive or dissipative properties that provide ideal solutions for all flooring applications, including MasterTop® 200, MasterTop® 1200, MasterTop® 1300 and Ucrete®. The specified requirement for conductive floor coatings is usually Rg<106 ohms in accordance with EN 1081 or CEI/ASTM standards.

Complete Protection Systems for Car ParksParking structures are constantly exposed to aggressive chemical and intensive traffic movement; therefore it's essential to protect the surfaces to prolong their lifespan. Specifying the correct solution for the waterproofing and protection of car parks is a complex decision, balancing current and future performance criteria against cost and installation time constraints. A well specified solution reduces whole-life cost and downtime and leads to a brighter, cleaner, safer and more attractive environment in which customers feel personally safe and welcome.

Why choose car park solutions from BASF?The Construction Chemicals Division of BASF Group is the world's largest provider of construction chemicals products, systems and services for new construction, repair and refurbishment. We have devised and successfully realised a huge number of diver's solutions around the world, under demanding and widely varying climatic condition. As well as acquiring expertise from these projects, we are dedicated to continuous investment in the research and development of new and existing systems.

Our partnering approach covers not only products but also systems and services. This is your guarantee that you are dealing with a partner who wants to know and understand your requirements, and who will take a holistic approach to find a solution tailor- made to your needs.

Your First Line of DefenseCar park surfaces are constantly exposed to aggressive chemicals as a result of oil and acids spills and carbon dioxide gases. Surface salt deposits in coastal areas where there is a saline atmosphere, climatic conditions such as humidity, rain, and the impact of chloride ion ingress all add up to form a corrosive environment, the effects of which will be worsened if cracks already exist in concrete decks. The use of a protective is therefore essential to reduce life-cycle costs and downtime caused by the maintenance of deteriorating surfaces.

For the car park owner, maintaining a serviceable deck surface is a vital aspect of car park maintenance. A poor surface finish increases the likelihood of skids and the risk of liability in the event of end users making an insurance claim for an incident. BASF systems all include a hard wearing, skid resistant finish, thus minimising accident risks due to skidding.

The function of the systems extends beyond protection to the practical considerations of differentiation of parking bays, traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways. Varying the deck surface through the use of colours and light-reflective coatings improves the usability of the car park and increases its aesthetics, creating a safe and welcoming atmosphere.

2) Rubber Impact System WABO Rubber impact system provides a huge range from wheel stopper, speed guard, column and wall guard to insure safety & protection for the concrete section.3) Anti – carbonation protection Coating MasterProtect 200 Untreated columns, walls and soffits are vulnerable to the damaging ingress of carbon dioxide, chlorides and water. This can lead to structural damage and safety issues.

They also look neglected and decayed due to the effects of weathering and vehicle pollution.

The MasterSeal range of anti-carbonation coatings can address these problems and give long- term structural protection from environmental damage and bring a light.

MasterSeal coating can be applied to concrete, masonry and well bonded existing coatings. 3) Jointing systems

Expansion joints (Mechanical)

BASF via its WABO (Wastom Bowman) division has been supplying expansion joints systems to the construction industry for more than 40 years.

Our expansion joint systems are manufactured in the highest standards, because we know that water ingress into a concrete structure due to thermal expansion, settlement or joint fatigue can result in significant refurbishment cost due to substrate deterioration.

WABO expansion joint systems provide advanced solutions for the most rigorous conditions; the range has been designed to provide an engineered solution for even the most heavily trafficked car park structure.

(Sealant) All structures move, and accommodating this movement while keeping other important physical characteristics is essential to structural integrity. Elastomeric joint sealants provide a technical solution to designing movement into structures.

The MasterSeal range of single and two component polyurethane and polysulphide sealants are designed to provide solutions for a range of environments and applications to substrates which include concrete, masonry, aluminum, wood, parking decks, precast units, curtain wall and shopping centres.
