A strategy of innovation and development The Refresco Group serves major retailers and brands through 21 production sites, employing roughly 2,400 personnel. It has more than 100 production lines, many of which are aseptic, including eight in France, where it has over 600 employees. Savings: over 1,700 t of carbon dioxide,

38,000 cubic meters of water, 2.5 million

kWh and over 400 tons of virgin PET/year

A decrease in chemicals

Proactive support to help conceive innovations in sensitive productsFrédéric Thoraval, Industrial Director explains: “Our ambition was to promote and energise preservative-free carbonated drinks for retailers’ house brands and for the hard discount market.” He continues: “PET makes sense only with aseptic bottling. Hot filling doesn’t make sense from an energy or money standpoint, since it requires more PET material in the bottle. The development of aseptic technology, combined with the growth of PET and recycled PET - versus other materials such as glass and cartons - shows that there are great opportunities for future innovations in the field of sensitive products.”

Improved design for achieving substantial growthThe move to dry aseptic bottling was based on experience with a similar line installed a year before, but Refresco chose Sidel Combi for several reasons. It no longer uses air conveying and - with both machines housed in a single enclosure - has a smaller footprint. The second reason was a 3-fold drop in water consumption and a decrease in chemicals. The line helps Refresco lightweight preforms and make packaging savings. The company has optimised machine operation and reduced labour costs. Predis also helps Refresco to decrease or eliminate the use of preservatives in its drinks. With less conveying and fewer moving parts, maintenance is also greatly reduced. The production cycle times have been validated up to 120 hours with only a 3-hour cleaning and sterilization time. Above all, the line has enabled Refresco to increase its production volumes. After a period devoted to the bottling of tea-based drinks in different formats (1L, 1.5L and 2L), the line is now also used for fruit juices. The line runs 24 hours, six days a week. As a result, Refresco is currently saving more than 1,700 tons of carbon dioxide, 38,000 cubic meters of water, 2.5 million kWh and over 400 tons of virgin PET every year.
