Visico™/Ambicat™ – Cost effective crosslinked polyethylene

Over the past 15 years the manufacture of crosslinked / scorch retardant polyethylene using silane copolymers (Visico) has become widely established. Conventional extrusion plants, high line speeds, low scorch and excellent cable performance are important attributes. The Ambicat technology further develops its potential as a highly active tin-free catalyst system for the ambient curing of Visico.

The main application of Visico is in cable insulation for 1 kV underground, industrial and overhead cables. Other important applications are insulation for mains, telephone and automotive wires as well as track resistant floor heating and fire safety cables.

Casico™ – Halogen-free flame retardant

Casico fire retardancy is the perfect solution for internal cable applications where, in the case of fire, ignition, propagation, smoke density, heat release, corrosivity, irritancy and toxicity are of significant concern. Casico is totally free from halogens, i.e. fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine, heavy metals as well as plasticizers. Compared with halogenated flame retardant systems much less smoke, toxic and no corrosive gases are formed. Important factors, as most injuries in case of fire are due to difficulties to escape because of disorientation caused by heavy smoke and irritants (HCl, HBr, HF, SO2, NO2 etc) followed by poisoning by asphyxiants like CO, HCN etc. The lack of corrosive gases decreases the secondary effect of a fire as the risk for damaging electrical equipments, machines etc. is reduced.

As described above halogen-free polyolefins enjoy major advantages compared to PVC and other halogenated flame retardant systems in case of fire but suffer one disadvantage – higher heat release. The good electrical properties of polylolefins make, however, downsizing a possibility which will compensate for its inherently higher calorific value. Downsizing will be incorporated more and more in performance based cable design codes.

Recycling

Disposal by reprocessing and eventual incineration with heat recovery is the option solution. Visico, Ambicat, Casico and the other polyolefin based compounds described in this summary datasheet are all free from halogens, heavy metals and plasticizers. Prohibited burning of used cables containing halogen in order to get hold of the copper is a well known problem. Uncontrolled burning of such scrap is a big risk for contamination of the environment by dioxins and heavy metals. Polyolefins are, on the other hand, a very clean fuel and burning of halogenfree polyolefin cables based on described materials does not give such problems.

Concluding remarks

This application summary datasheet describes the principal uses of Borealis’ and Borouge’s standard products for low voltage underground, overhead and industrial applications. Neither all applications nor all products are listed. However, it is believed that the data presented will provide a good starting off point for a large range of potential applications.
