An outbreak of acute watery diarrhea was reported in Beletweyne on 23 January 2020. The outbreak is linked to inadequate clean water and sanitation following the recent floods in the area. Since the onset, Rapid Response Teams have reported at least 148 cases recorded, with a CFR of 2.4% in Beletweyne. This calls for urgent interventions to bring it down to <1%. Most of the cases have been reported to come from Kooshin, Hawo-Tako and Buundaweyn. Stool samples were collected and transported to the FMoH NPHRL in Mogadishu for laboratory testing and case confirmation. SMoH has established a new Cholera Treatment Center (CTC) at the Eljalle neighborhood of Beletweyne for case management. RRT and IERTS from the SMoH and WHO are vigilant, closely monitor- ing the situation, strengthening surveillance, verification and provid- ing decentralized treatment. Health and WASH Cluster partners are working together on case tracing, scaling up community awareness on hygiene and sanitation at facility and outreach level in the affected areas. They are also sensitiz- ing health workers on standard case definition, case detection and early treatment with oral rehydration salts, IPC and medical supplies. In coordination with the MoH, partners are working to improve response capacities, surveillance, data collection and daily line listing to better understand how the situation is evolving in Hiran region.
