RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP: 1. Doctoral Thesis: 1988 - 1993
"Assessment of spinal cord blood flow and function in sheep following antero-lateral cervical interbody fusion in animals with and without spinal cord injuries"
This research was conducted through the University of Adelaide in South Australia.
Supervisors: Professor Robert D FraserProfessor Donald Howie
Degree: Doctor of Medicine (Equivalent to PhD in USA) awarded October 11 th, 1993
A thesis for the award of post graduate doctoral degree of “Doctor of Medicine” at the University of Adelaide requires the candidate to demonstrate sound research principles and techniques, like that required for the award of a PhD, but has the added requirement of having to have made a significant contribution to medical science or understanding.
It was a requirement for enrolment that there be at least 12 months’ full time research, however, the remainder of the research, analysis and compilation of results could be undertaken on a part time basis.
2. Clinical ResearchClinical and research activities as Principle Investigator:1. Research project in collaboration with the Biomechanical Engineering
Department of the University of Denver, who have expertise in the field of Finite Element Analysis. The aim of the project is to identify and evaluate the biomechanical parameters contributing to the success, or failure, of lumbar total disc replacement.
Title: Pre-op Templating For TDR Alignment: Is It Clinically Relevant?COMIRB Protocol 12-1049 Effective Date: 28 Sep 2012Study completed Dec 2017
The results of this work have been presented at multiple international meetings since 2012 and resulted in three peer reviewed publications.
2. Industry sponsored study (SeaSpine) to assess the benefits, if any that exist related to the material used for cervical cage construction, comparing allograft bone to untreated PEEK and Titanium coated PEEK (NanoMetalene coating). This study is important to identify if any benefit exists as a number of companies report benefits in relation to achieving fusion success with the use of these coated implants. Companies charge a premium for implants coated with Titanium and if there is no clinical benefit conveyed by this process there would be no justification for their use, over cheaper alternatives.

During my residency, I created a comprehensive portfolio of electronic study notes relating to a broad range of orthopedic topics. Having completed my final board certification, I made these notes available to the residents, or registrars as they are referred to in Australia, following me. It is these notes that were subsequently published online in 1997. The content has been updated and added to over the years and are available via open access online.
