Vision Statement

SACOV advocates in resilience for the wellbeing of Somali Community in

Victoria.

Mission Statement

The Somali Australian Council advocates for the Somalis need in government

and non-government agencies that provide social service in Victoria and

setting up the resources and information they require.

Creating conducive environment for people to be able to communicate and

address their needs and set up a service to provide referral, advice and

advocacy in building thriving and achieving community.

Our Services • Acting as an umbrella body for Somali organisations in Victoria and

supporting the activities of member organisations, youth, women and

applying for funds for them.

• Lobbying to find work experience placement and suitable jobs for

young Somalis with tertiary qualifications from Australian educational

institutions.

• Providing homework club for primary and secondary school students

of Somali descent whose parents do not have the means of hiring a

private tutor and need extra assistance in Science, Maths and English

on one-on-one tutor basis to reach basic literacy and numeracy

benchmarks required for their level of education.

• Providing free access to computers, Internet, and other office facilities

and advice to enable community members to access the job market and

community information.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It has been an honour to serve SACOV as President for the last twelve months and I would

like to thank the executive committee for their assistance in running this fine organisation.

One of the pleasures of writing the President’s report for the AGM is that it forces one to

take stock and look back on the year, at which point one thinks “Did SACOV really do all

that?” Of course, it is you, the Committee members and the volunteers, who do all of the

work behind the scenes that is resulting in an increasing level of activity by SACOV in

many areas, not only in Heidelberg and surrounding areas but all over Victoria and

sometimes the whole country.

I am always amazed by how willing very busy people are to put up their hands to take on

additional tasks and, on behalf of the SACOV, I would like to thank you all for your

considerable contributions

This year has seen members vote on a new logo which hopefully is very familiar to you

now. I hope you agree that this provides an up to‐date but lasting look that builds upon the

previous logo and history of SACOV.

We launched our new website (sacov.org.au) in September 2017. We hope that the new

website will provide much more functionality for members and be a resource that you are

keen to use.

Last year August we moved from our old office to our new office The Harmony Centre, 48

The Mall which is a bigger place and environmentally friend place. We also started

servicing more people since we moved to the new office.

SACOV has organised community events such as, Ramadan Iftar Dinners at the Mall, and

at Heidelberg Mosque, Mosque Open Day at Heidelberg Mosque, Cultural Diversity

Celebration at the Mall to create a very strong relationship between the Somali Community

and the wider Community. SACOV with the partnership of Himilo also organised

leadership forum for the youth, Anglesea and Horsham youth camps.

SACOV is also organised the Somali Soccer Trip, it was the first time a Somali Youth went

back to Somali to play Soccer.

I would like to extend my gratitude to Federal Government, State Government, Victoria

Multicultural Commission, and Banyule City Council for their financial grants.

Finally, there are always individuals that significantly keep the organisation on track and

need a special mention. We thank our hard working and generous volunteer Said Farah.

REPORT

2016-2017 financial year the SACOV continued to advocate the issue of Housing,

Immigration and Centre Link on behalf of the Somali community to the concerned

Departments.

During 2016-2017, SACOV had issued 128 support letter for public housing and affordable

housing across Victoria, 51 support letter for immigration matters, 31 support letter for

court related issues and other matters.

SACOV also supports the Somali traditional teaching(Dugsi). The Dugsi is run by

volunteer community teachers. The number enrolled during 2016-2017 were 25.

SACOV also supports the Elders Group, the Volunteers Group, the Sports Group (HSSC)

and the Women's Group.

July 13 2016, the Cartledge Reserve, the Home ground of Heidelberg Stars Soccer Club opened the

Mayor Cr. Craig Langdon. The 1.6-Million-dollar new sporting facility were funded and built by

the Banyule City Council. It is huge multipurpose building and brand new ground with lights for

night. SACOV has been advocating this project for 6 years and it finally happened.

FORMER SOMALI PRIME MINISTER’S VISIT TO AUSTRALIA

The visit of Former Prime Minister of the Somali Federal Government Mr. Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed and

Mr. Abdirahman Abdullahi (Baadiyow ) to Australia from 24th September to 30th September 2016

.

FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES INFORMATION SESSION 21 October 2016, SACOV organized a Community Information Session of Fire and Emergency Services.

It was well attended and very beneficial for the community

DRUG INFORMATION FORUM: Somali Police engagement team made up of Somali Australian council of Victoria, Victoria Police,

Himilo and Heidelberg Stars SC. Based on outcomes from meetings and community consultations

in the last quarter deliver a follow up event. On the 16th of November at the Harmony Centre. The

tailored Drug Information forum was delivered by various speakers from Victoria Police

Clandestine labs, Odyssey House A&D services and CCBE

SOMALI SOCCER TRIP 2016(18 NOVEMBER 2016-10 DECEMBER 2016)

SACOV in partnership with The Somali Week Group took twenty young men mainly from

Banyule and surrounding areas to embark on a journey of a lifetime by traveling back to Somalia

from Australia, to play football and discover their homeland for the first time and give back to the

local communities.

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM:

SACOV collaborated with Himilo project delivered the Somali community leadership

development program. The program was developed to help participating Somali youth acquire

personal and leadership skills required to engage with and contribute to the wider community, and

become positive change agents. This was a pilot program. Lessons from this experience will be

used to develop a future course in order to expand participants’ peer networks, this program

commenced 1st of March and ran until 30 July. For 2 Hours fortnight out of shop 48. As part of the

leadership program all the young participants were taken on a youth leadership camp run and

delivered by the Australian army in Horsham Victoria. The camp helped young people develop

interpersonal, communication skills along with developing self-confidence, identity and mental

strength.

FRIENDS OF AFRICA FUNDRAISING DINNER ON FRIDAY 31 MARCH 2017.

This dinner was a fund raising Dinner to support a team of young Somali men and women to travel to Somalia in

November 2017 to participate in soccer, sporting and cultural activities.

HEIDELBERG MOSQUE OPEN DAY 6 MAY 2017

The Mosque Open Day was delivered on Saturday 28 May 2016, from 11am to 4pm.

The event brought together committee members from the El Sedeak Islamic Society (Heidelberg

Mosque), the representatives from the Somali Australia Council of Victoria, and officers from

Banyule City Council to meet weekly and engage in collaborative planning.

The event provided a range of activities for the visitors. Tours of the mosque were scheduled on

the hour, and children enjoyed access to two jumping castles, art activities and casual sporting

games. A free BBQ was provided throughout.

2017 IFTAR DINNERS

Iftar Dinners are a wonderful opportunity to break the fast together and to learn more about the diverse

cultural and faith traditions. It is also in recognition of the religious observance of local Muslim

communities, from different countries.

The Ramadan Iftar event was held on Friday 10 June 2016 at the Harmony Centre (48 The Mall). A

delicious buffet halal meal produced by Bell Street Mall trader’s association was provided from sundown

with vegetarian options available.

This was a free community event funded by VMC and deliver by the Bell Street Mall traders association

and SACOV, with the support of Banyule City Council.

There were also other Iftar dinners organised by SACOV, Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews, and

Victoria police, Latrobe University, ISRA and Alsadeek Society.

RAMADAN INDOOR SOCCER PROGRAM. The Ramadan Indoor Soccer program was a follow up from last year’s Program. This year we included the

children under 12 and 10 years old.

The tournament was held during the month of June which coincided with Ramadan when these young men

were fasting during the day.

This program encouraged the young kids to learn discipline and be passion. The program was to a build a

strong community connection through participation of the program, and providing leadership to the

volunteer team who will assist in the running of the event.

Dr Hussein Haraco reported the issues of Housing, the increase of Anti Social Behaviour of Somali Youth

6. FINANCIAL REPORT

An Audited financial report for the year July 2015-June 2016 were tabled by Mr. Abdirizak Mohamud the

Treasurer of SACOV. There were no questions in relation to the accounts.
