    0.1. T h e m a t e r i a l . The analysis and description is based on data col-leered between 1958-1962 in direct field-work w ith eleven Ceylon Tam ilspeakers. These informan ts must be classified into fo ur g roups: a. spea-kers from Jaffna, b. from Trincomalee, c. from Batticaloa, d. speakerso f mixed comm on Cey lonese.

    These data were supplemented by m aterial ga thered from three othe rinformants picked up among Ceylonese Tamilians studying in Madrasand Trivandrum.

    The material consists of several hundred test-sentences and a fewtexts, as well as of lists of test-words an d stretches of conversation an dnarratives, tape-recorded on Grundig, speed 3,75 inch/s, an d o n StartTesla AN P 402, speed 4 ,76 cm/s.
