SOME THINGS TAUGHT BY JESUS

MATTHEW 17:5

TEXT

JESUS AFFIRMED HIS DEITY

• JN. 17:5 - “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”

• JN. 8:56-58 - “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." 57 Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" 58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

JESUS AFFIRMED HIS DEITY

• JN. 10:30 - “ I and My Father are one.”

• JN. 8:17-18 - “It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.”

• MATT. 4:10 - “Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.”

JESUS AFFIRMED HIS DEITY

• JN. 9:35-38 - Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?" 36 He answered and said, "Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?" 37 And Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you." 38 Then he said, "Lord, I believe!" And he worshiped Him.

JESUS AFFIRMED HIS DEITY

• JN. 1:1-3, 14 - “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” Verse 14 - And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

NECESSITY OF BEING HUMBLE

• LUKE 18:9-14 - “Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

NECESSITY OF BEING HUMBLE

• MATT. 11:28-30 - “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

NECESSITY OF BEING HUMBLE

• PHIL. 2:5-8 - Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

NECESSITY OF BEING HUMBLE

• PROV. 16:18-19 - “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.”

NECESSITY OF BEING HUMBLE

• OBADIAH VERSE 3-4 - “The pride of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Whose habitation is high; You who say in your heart, 'Who will bring me down to the ground?' 4 Though you ascend as high as the eagle, And though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," says the LORD.

NECESSITY OF BEING HUMBLE

• 1 PET. 5:5-6 - “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time”

PURE IN HEART

• MATT. 5:8 - “Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God”

• MATT. 15:18-20 - But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, urders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man."

PURE IN HEART

• PROV. 4:23 - “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”

• PROV. 23:7 – “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”

PURE IN HEART

• MATT. 5:21-22 - You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder,' and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment. 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.

PURE IN HEART

• MATT. 5:27-28 - You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

PURE IN HEART

• PHIL. 4:8 - “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these thing”

ESSENTIAL TO FOLLOW HIM

• JN. 21:19-22 - “This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me." 20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?" 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, "But Lord, what about this man?" 22 Jesus said to him, "If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me."

ESSENTIAL TO FOLLOW HIM

• LUKE 9:57-62 - Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, "Lord, I will follow You wherever You go." 58 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." 59 Then He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." 60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God." 61 And another also said, "Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house." 62 But Jesus said to him, "No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."

ESSENTIAL TO FOLLOW HIM

• 1 PET. 2:21 - For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

ESSENTIAL TO FOLLOW HIM

• JN. 10:27-28 - “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”

ESSENTIAL TO FOLLOW HIM

• MARK 14:54 - But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.

SEEK AND SAVE THE LOST

• LUKE 19:10 – “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

SOME THINGS MAN CANNOT DO

• DEVISE A PLAN TO SAVE– PROV. 14:12 – “There is a way that

seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”

SOME THINGS MAN CANNOT DO

• DEVISE A PLAN TO SAVE– JER. 10:23 – “O LORD, I know the way of

man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.”

SOME THINGS MAN CANNOT DO

• DEVISE A PLAN TO SAVE– ISA. 55:8-9 – “For My thoughts are not

your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. 9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

SOME THINGS MAN CANNOT DO

• DEVISE A PLAN TO SAVE– 1 COR. 1:18-21 – For the message of the cross is

foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent." 20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

SOME THINGS MAN MUST DO

• OBEY FROM THE HEART– ACTS 2:40-41 – “And with many other

words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.”

SOME THINGS MAN MUST DO

• OBEY FROM THE HEART– HEB. 5:8-9 – “though He was a Son, yet

He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him”

SOME THINGS MAN MUST DO

• OBEY FROM THE HEART– ROM. 6:17-18 - But God be thanked that

though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

WE ARE LIMITED BY TIME

• JOB 14:1-2 - "Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. 2 He comes forth like a flower and fades away; He flees like a shadow and does not continue.

WE ARE LIMITED BY TIME

• HEB. 9:27 – “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment”

WE ARE LIMITED BY TIME

• 2 COR.5:10 – “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”

CONCLUSION

• WHY SHOULD WE COME HUMBLY TO CHRIST?

• WHY SHOULD WE FOLLOW HIM?
