1. Engineering DesignCentral Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge.

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Page 3: Somerset Berkley Regional High School

1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign.

Step 1Identify the

problem

Write down the original problem here.Student - Design, build and program a robot to: compete in the sumo bot challenge

What constraints have been placed on your team? (Deadlines, resources etc.) We must have our 1st prototype done by the 17th of January

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 2Research the

problem

Explore other options via the internetStudent: List the internet sites that were helpful.Site 1 http://nxtprograms.com/mini_sumo/index.htmlSite 2 http://drgraeme.net/DrGraeme-free-NXT-G-tutorials/Ch46/SUMO-G/default.htmSite 3 http://mrcrokesrobotics.weebly.com

What did you learn from your research?A Use a wall or a battering ram to harm opponentsB Use at least two powered wheelsC large wheels are useful to propel robot

Step 3Develop solutions BRAINSTORM

COLLABORATION

Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below.

1. Wall on the front of the robot2.Claw3. Shield and battering ram

Step 4Select the best

Possible solution(s)

Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need orsolve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response.

The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment.

Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your firstprototype will look like.

Lauren MarquesOur prototype will include a wall/shield that will

protect it during the competition. We decided to gear down the robot and it could move quickly away in the ring. We attempted to put a “battering ram” type of weapon on the back to use during the competition. Our robot will be more of a defensive type with the wall as well. We will also add something extra on the back to reinforce the wheels.

Page 9: Somerset Berkley Regional High School

Ashley Frank:Our robot will be a more compact and

speedy design. We will include a wall/barricade in the front for defense against our competitors. With our large gears acting on the smaller ones, our robot will be able to quickly evade other robots trying to push us out of the ring. The motors for our robot will be placed beneath it so we have more room to add parts as needed in the front.

Miranda C

We geared down our robot to make it go faster. We have a barricade on the front of it that also can flip our opponents. We have two big wheels in the back of it and one in the front. I think our robot will be very successful.

Step 5Construct a prototype

Build a robot with your NXT lego kitCreate a computer program for your robot.

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs.

Step 6Test and Evaluate

the solution(s)

1. Does your robot work? Yes2. Did it perform as expected? For the most part 3. What changes are necessary for the robot and the program? We had to Fix the wheels and change the claw1. Does it meet the original design constraints? Yes2. Is it safe?Yes3. Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project.

Step 7Communicate the solution(s)

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Provide the YouTube link of your video that showshow your robot meets the challenge.

Redesign

Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gatheredduring testing and self-assessment activity.

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

We took off the gears on the motors so the robot was able to turn and move better.
