Mark Moor InternationalVehicle Festival, 2016
Welcome
The Mark Moor International Vehicle Festivalfeatures ‘Ernie’
Come and meet ‘Ernie’‘Ernie’ is a Carmichael Jetranger 4 Wheel Drive Fire Tender (1978) EGO 852T. The Carmichaelairfield fire tender is a high performance vehicle designed for aircraft crash fire fighting and rescuepurposes. It was produced from 1976 to 1990 when it was preceded by the Cobra. The vehiclecarries 750 gallons of water and 100 gallons of foam solution. The off-road mobility, accelerationand fire fighting performance made the vehicle one of the most formidable available at the time. The vehicle’s chassis is based on the 4x4 S&D chassis model CX and is manufactured by Shelvokeand Drewry Ltd, Letchworth, England. Engine 9.1ltr Cummins V8 555C turbo charged Diesel engineproducing 239kw and 320hp at 3000rpm. Pump and Monitor is a single stage centrifugal firepump of 1000 gallons per minute output at pressures up to 150psi and is constructed in corrosionresistant light alloy. The Carmichael c4000 monitor has a dual output capability and the maximumthroughput is 450 gallons per minute at 150psi pump pressure.
HISTORY AS WE KNOW...Originally owned by British Aerospace and based at Kingston beforebeing transferred to Dunsford Aerodrome (where Top Gear is filmed). The tender was put to teston 2nd July 1986 when pilot Jim Hawkins was tragically killed after his developmental Hawk 200crashed at Dunsford. It was then privately purchased in 2001 and donated to Gatwick AviationMuseum. When the owner died the engine was sold on eBay in 2015 to raise much needed fundsfor the aviation museum. The current owner has spent many hours (with help from good friends)restoring the fire tender. When it first arrived it needed a lot of tlc as it was looking very tired, andmany parts were seized and not working. It is now pretty much fully operational again andsporting nice new shiny paintwork.
