It may not seem to be anything wonderful when God picks out some really outstanding people like Peter and Paul and does great things through them. . . . But when he takes humble, unimportant people like Philip, and makes of them the very saints of God, that is really wonderful.

A practical result
Jesus encourages us to serve, because He recruits and uses ordinary people like Philip. He rewards those who seek Him, like Nathanael, by revealing truth to them. He inspires us to worship, because He truly is the Son of God, the Sovereign of Israel and our Stairway to Heaven.
