Song Set 2 Manual

+ Reception info.

INTRODUCTION

Song Set Two gives a new set of songs to be explored through movement and games. The

songs have been chosen to consolidate all that was experienced in Song Set One whilst

adding more musical concepts to ensure constant incremental progression. These new

songs contain from 2 to 5 different pitches and new rhythmic cells. It is possible with these

songs to become familiar with the pentatonic scale which provides so much scope for

improvising and composing. Singing through the pentatonic scale regularly with Body

pitches and then Solfa gives a foundation in scale learning which can then be built on

incrementally and reaching a full diatonic scale in Song Set Four.

When delivering singing sessions to Reception aged children it is important to encourage

joining in as best they can at all times. It is very important to continue to give children the

opportunity to sing without an adult supporting them – they will often surprise you with

how well they can sing if you leave them to it!

Sticks & Blobs is a series of books designed to incrementally teach children to “musically”

read notation. The aim is to equip them to be able to sight sing which gives them the skill of

being able to read music and hear what it will sound like in their heads before playing it on

an instrument. The quality of instrumental playing is transformed using this concept. The

table below gives a rough guideline of which books can be used for each year group.

A Musical Summary

Sticks & Blobs

Pre-Stage 1

Sharing books in pairs

Preparing them for working in desks

Be clear who is going first at an exercise

Incremental Steps

Start with simple pointing exercises – Cobbler Cobbler / Seesaw

Once pointing and singing is good move on to changing the words to colours

Demonstrate First

Show them clearly what you want them to do with each exercise – do this demonstration before you give

the books out or else they will be focussed on the book and not what you are showing them.

They Enjoy It!

Most children find these exercises really satisfying. Try to give them 2 gos at each exercise as this gives

them the chance to improve.

Only tackle one or at the most 2 exercises in a lesson from these books at this stage.
