WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION

The units in this manual contain a self-diagnostic function. If an error occurs, the STANDBY/TIMER lamp will automatically begin toflash. The number of times the lamp flashes translates to a probable source of the problem. A definition of the STANDBY/TIMER lampflash indicators is listed in the instruction manual for the user's knowledge and reference. If an error symptom cannot be reproduced, theremote commander can be used to review the failure occurrence data stored in memory to reveal past problems and how often theseproblems occur.

1. DIAGNOSTIC TEST INDICATORS

When an error occurs, the STANDBY/TIMER lamp will flash a set number of times to indicate the possible cause of the problem. If thereis more than one error, the lamp will identify the first of the problem areas.

Results for all of the following diagnostic items are displayed on screen. No error has occurred if the screen displays a "0".

3. STOPPING THE STANDBY/TIMER FLASHTurn off the power switch on the TV main unit or unplug the power cord from the outlet to stop the STANDBY/TIMER lamp from flashing.

4. SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SCREEN DISPLAYFor errors with symptoms such as "power sometimes shuts off" or "screen sometimes goes out" that cannot be confirmed, it is possible to bring uppast occurrences of failure for confirmation on the screen:

5. HANDLING OF SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SCREEN DISPLAYSince the diagnostic results displayed on the screen are not automatically cleared, always check the self-diagnostic screen during repairs. When youhave completed the repairs, clear the result display to "0".

Unless the result display is cleared to "0", the self-diagnostic function will not be able to detect subsequent faults after completion of the repairs.

[Clearing the result display]To clear the result display to "0", press buttons on the remote commander sequentially as shown below when the diagnostic screen is beingdisplayed.

6. SELF-DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT

+B overcurrent (OCP) Occurs when an overcurrent on the +B(115V) line is detected by pin 18 of IC301. If the

voltage to pin 18 of IC301 is less than 1V when V.SYNC is more than seven verticals

in a period, the unit will automatically turn off.

Vertical deflection stopped Occurs when an absence of the vertical deflection pulse is detected by pin 17 of IC001.

Power supply will shut down when waveform interval exceeds 2 seconds.

White balance failure If the RGB levels* do not balance within 2 seconds after the power is turned on, this

error will be detected by IC301. TV will stay on, but there will be no picture.

*(Refers to the RGB levels of the AKB detection Ref pulse that detects IK.)

SAFETY CHECK-OUT

After correcting the original service problem, perform the following

safety checks before releasing the set to the customer:

1. Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or poorly-

soldered connections. Check the entire board surface for solder

splashes and bridges.

2. Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no wires are “pinched”

or contact high-wattage resistors.

3. Check that all control knobs, shields, covers, ground straps, and

mounting hardware have been replaced. Be absolutely certain that

you have replaced all the insulators.

4. Look for unauthorized replacement parts, particularly transistors,

that were installed during a previous repair. Point them out to the

customer and recommend their replacement.

5. Look for parts which, though functioning, show obvious signs of

deterioration. Point them out to the customer and recommend

their replacement.

6. Check the line cords for cracks and abrasion. Recommend the

replacement of any such line cord to the customer.

7. Check the B+ and HV to see if they are specified values. Make

sure your instruments are accurate; be suspicious of your HV

meter if sets always havE low HV.

8. Check the antenna terminals, metal trim, “metallized" knobs,

screws, and all other exposed metal parts for AC Leakage. Check

leakage as described below.

LEAKAGE TESTThe AC leakage from any exposed metal part to earth ground and

from all exposed metal parts to any exposed metal part having a return

to chassis, must not exceed 0.5 mA (500 microampere). Leakage

current can be measured by any one of three methods.

1. A commercial leakage tester, such as the Simpson 229 or RCA

WT-540A. Follow the manufacturers' instructions to use these

instructions.

2. A battery-operated AC milliammeter. The Data PrecisioN 245

digital multimeter is suitable for this job.

3. Measuring the voltage drop across a resistor by means of a VOM

or battery-operated AC voltmeter. The "limit" indication is 0.75

V, so analog meters must have an accurate low voltage scale. The

Simpson's 250 and Sanwa SH-63Trd are examples of passive

VOMs that are suitable. Nearly all battery operated digital

multimeters that have a 2V AC range are suitable. (See Fig. A)

HOW TO FIND A GOOD EARTH GROUNDA cold-water pipe is guaranteed earth ground; the cover-plate

retaining screw on most AC outlet boxes is also at earth ground. If

the retaining screw is to be used as your earth-ground, verify that it

is at ground by measuring the resistance between it and a cold-water

pipe with an ohmmeter. The reading should be zero ohms. If a cold-

water pipe is not accessible, connect a 60-l00 watts trouble light

(not a neon lamp) between the hot side of the receptacle and the

retaining screw. Try both slots, if necessary, to locate the hot side of

the line, the lamp should light at normal brilliance if the screw is at

ground potential. (See Fig. B)

Conexión a Sistema de Cable por Medio deDecodificador

Algunos sistemas de televisión por cable de paga usan señalesdeformadas o codificadas que requieren un decodificador* parapoder ver todos los canales.

Nota• Si va a hacer la selección de todos los canales a través de su

decodificador, debe usted considerar la posibilidad de usar lafunción FIJAR CANAL, que se describe en la pág. 10.

Conexión a Videograbadora

Consulte las instrucciones para instalar la videograbadora. Unavez conectada la videograbadora al televisor, podrá:• Ver videocintas• Grabar un programa de televisión mientras ve otro

Paso 2: Uso del Control Remoto

Las instrucciones de este manual se refieren al uso del controlremoto. Para KV-21SE80A, 29AL40A, 29SL40A, 29VL65A, 29XT11A,tendrá un botón que equivale al comando SELECT.Las ilustraciones de los menús que se utilizan en este manualcorresponden al modelo KV-29VL65A. Es posible que sus menús enpantalla no aparezcan igual que aquellos utilizados en este manual.Al presentar funciones que se encuentren en otros modelos, elmanual indicará los números de modelo correspondientes.

Instalación de las Pilas

Inserte dos pilas AA (R6) (se incluyen). Asegúrese que los signos + y– de las pilas concuerdan con los signos + y – dentro del controlremoto. Las pilas deben durar aproximadamente6 meses con uso normal.

Notas• Para evitar el daño que podría causar la fuga de electrólito de las pilas,

sáquelas del compartimento si no piensa utilizar el control remotodurante largo tiempo.

• Maneje el control remoto con cuidado. No lo deje caer ni permita quese moje. No lo coloque bajo la luz solar directa, cerca de un calentón oen lugares húmedos.

• Se puede emplear el control remoto incluído con el televisor para quetambién haga funcionar una videocastera o un reproductor de videodiscos, sea o no de la marca Sony (Sólo KV-21SE80A, 29AL40A,29SL40A, 29VL65A, 29XT11A). Consulte el folleto que acomapaña eltelevisor para instrucciones sobre programar su control remoto.

Programación Automática del Televisor

Con excepción KV-14MB40ALa función Guía de Programación Fácil le permitirá seleccionar el idioma de losmenús y sintonizar automáticamente todos los canales que el televisor puedarecibir.

1 Oprima POWER para encender el televisor.Aparecerá en pantalla la Guía deProgramación Fácil.

2 Oprima CH+ para que los menúsaparezcan en inglés o CH– para queaparezcan en español.

3 Oprima VOL+ para continuar o VOL –para una demostración de las funcionesy menús.

Para repetir AUTO AJUSTEOprima SET UP en la parte delantera del televisor y sigue los pasos 1-3.

Programación Automática de los Canales (AUTO PROGRAMACION)

La función de AUTO PROGRAMACION le permite programar en un sólopaso todos los canales que su televisor pueda recibir. Despues, podráomitir los canales que no desee incluir o añadir otros.

Notas• Si el televisor está ajustado a una entrada de VIDEO, no podrá utilizar

AUTO PROGRAMACION. Oprima TV/VIDEO del control remoto hastaque aparezca un número de canal.

• Se recomienda programar los canales durante el día, cuando mayor númerode canales están transmitiendo.

Ajuste del SISTEMA DE COLOR

Es posible ajustar manualmente el SISTEMA DE COLOR para cada modode entrada. El SISTEMA DE COLOR generalmente tiene asignado el ajusteAUTO. El ajuste de fábrica es AUTO. Si la reprodución de la imagen esdeficiente, seleccione el sistema de color adecuado.

Eliminación del Sonido

Información en Pantalla

Utilice el botón DISPLAY para ver la hora actual, canal y función de sonidoMulticanal (MTS).

1 Oprima DISPLAY.Aparecerán el número de canal y la hora actual(si está ajustada). También aparecerá la modalidadde sonido multicanal (MTS) que está en uso si se haseleccionado un segundo programa de audio (SAP)o sonido estereofónico (ESTEREO) (con excepciónKV-14MB40A).La indicación MTS desaparecerá a los 4 segundos.

2 Oprima DISPLAY una vez más.CC1 (el ajuste de fábrica) aparecerá en la pantalla. Una versión escrita deldiálogo aparecerá, si la emisora ofrece este servicio.

3 Para desactivar CAPTION VISION, vuelva a oprimir DISPLAY hasta queaparezca la indicación DISPLAY OFF.DISPLAY OFF desparecerá a los tres segundos.

Apagado Automático (SLEEP)

La función SLEEP permite que el televisor esté encendido por el período de tiempoque usted indique y después se apague automáticamente.

1 Oprima SLEEP en el control remoto hasta queaparezca el número de minutos que desee.Un minuto antes de que el televisor se apague,aparecerá en la pantalla el mensaje SLEEP.

2 Para cancelar el apagado automático,vuelva a oprimir SLEEP hasta que aparezcaSLEEP OFF o apague el televisor.

Nota• Si su televisor no recibe una señal en treinta minutos, se apagará automáticamente.

Para poner HORA DE VERANO

Puedes programar HORA DE VERANO para ajustar automáticamente el tiempo.

1 Oprima MENU y seleccione el menú de RELOJ .2 Coloque el cursor en HORA DE VERANO y oprima SELECT ( ).3 Oprima V o v para selecionar SI o NO basandose en las siguientes opciones:

Programación de FIJAR CANAL

Esta función resulta útil cuando quiera hacer todos los cambios de canal a travésde un decodificador de cable o un aparato de video.

1 Oprima MENU y seleccione el menú de PREFERENCIAS .2 Coloque el cursor en AJUSTE DE CANAL

y oprima SELECT ( ).3 Seleccione FIJAR CANAL y ajuste su

televisor a una de las siguientes opciones:2–6: Cuando el decodificador se encuentreconectado a AUX y el cable o antena estaconectado a la entrada VHF/UHF. Utilice elcontrol remoto de su decodificador paracambiar canales.VIDEO 1: Cuando haya conectado un aparato de video (p.ej. receptor de DSS) yquiere que el televisor reciba la señal de ese aparato. Puedes intercambiar entre lasdos fuentes de video.AUX 2–6: Cuando un decodificador se encuentre conectado a AUX y el cable oantena esta conectado a la entrada VHF/UHF. Alterna entre las dos fuentes devideo (sólo KV-29VL65A).OFF: Cuando quiere apagar FIJAR CANAL.

Notas• Para detalles sobre la conexión de un decodificador, consulte la pág. 3.• Se borrarán las selecciones de ENCENDIDO/APAGADO al utilizar la función FIJAR

CANAL.• La función CANAL FAVORITO no puede ser accesada cuando la función de FIJAR

Para usar BLOQUEAR CANAL

Esta función sirve para impedir que los niños vean determinados canales.

SELECT ( ).4 Oprima V o v para mostrar el canal que

desea bloquear. Oprima SELECT ( ).Al escoger el canal que va a suprimir, lapalabra BLOQUEADO aparecerá en lapantalla y se suprimirán CAPTION VISION.

Para cancelar las opciones seleccionadas bajo BLOQUEAR CANALOprima RESET, cuando se encuentre en el menú de BLOQUEAR CANAL.

Para seleccionar una Opción de CAPTION VISION

Algunos programas son transmitidos con subtítulos conocidos como CAPTIONVISION. Estos servicios son limitados a específicas emisoras y es posible queno esten disponsibles en su área. (El ajuste de fábrica es CC1).

Sólo KV-29VL65ALa función de imagen en imagen (PIP) le permite ver dos canales simultáneamente,uno al tamaño normal como imagen principal, y el otro en una imagen máspequeña conocida como “ventana” o imagen secundaria.Al leer esta tabla, consulte su control remoto.

Nota• Debe oprimir el botón TV (FUNCTION) antes de poder controlar la función de

imagen en imagen (PIP) con los botones amarillos.

HOW TO HANDLE AN ANODE-CAP

11111 Do not use sharp objects which may cause damage to the surfaceof the anode-cap.

22222 Do not squeeze the rubber covering too hard to avoid damaging theanode-cap. A material fitting called a shatter-hook terminal is builtinto the rubber.

33333 Do not force turn the foot of the rubber cover. This may cause theshatter-hook terminal to protrude and damage the rubber.

11111 Turn up one side of the rubber cap inthe direction indicated by the arrow aaaaa.

SECTION 3SET-UP ADJUSTMENTS

The following adjustments should be made when a completerealignment is required or a new picture tube is installed. Theseadjustments should be performed with rated power supplyvoltage unless otherwise noted.

The controls and switch should be set as follows unlessotherwise noted:

PICTURE control ................. normal

BRIGHTNESS control ......... normal

3-1. BEAM LANDING

Preparation:

• Feed in the white pattern signal.• Before starting, degauss the entire screen.

1. Input a raster signal with the pattern generator.

2. Loosen the deflection yoke mounting screw, and set the puritycontrol to the center as shown in Fig.2.

3. Turn the raster signal of the pattern generator to green.

4. Move the deflection yoke backward, and adjust with the puritycontrol so that green is in the center and red and blue are at thesides evenly. (Fig.3)

5. Move the deflection yoke forward, and adjust so that the entirescreen becomes green. (Fig.1)

6. Switch over the raster signal to red and blue and confirm thecondition.

7. When the position of the deflection yoke is determined, tightenit with the deflection yoke mounting screw.

8. When landing at the corner is not right, adjust by using the diskmagnets. (Fig.4)

Perform the adjustments in order as follows:

If the blue dot does not converge with red and green dots, performthe following steps:

• Move BMC magnet (a) to correct insufficient H. Static conver-gence.

• Rotate BMC magnet (b) to correct insufficient V. Static conver-gence.

In either case, repeat Beam Landing Adjustment.

( 2 ) Dynamic Convergence Adjustment

Preparation:

• Before starting, perform Horizontal and Vertical StaticConvergence Adjustment.

1. Slightly loosen deflection yoke screw.

2. Remove deflection yoke spacers.

3. Move the deflection yoke for best convergence as shownbelow. ( Fig. 8)

4. Tighten the deflection yoke screw.

5. Install the deflection yoke spacers.

3-2. CONVERGENCE

Preparation:

• Before starting, perform FOCUS, V. LIN and V. SIZEadjustments.

• Set BRIGHTNESS control to minimum.• Feed in dot pattern.

(1) Vertical Static Convergence

1. Adjust V. STAT magnet to converge red, green and blue dots inthe center of the screen. (Vertical movement)

Tilt the V. STAT magnet and adjust static convergence to open orclose the V. STAT magnet.

2. When the V. STAT magnet is moved in the direction of arrow aand b, red, green, and blue dots move as shown below:

3-5. METHOD OF SETTING THE SERVICE ADJUSTMENT MODE

(1) SERVICE MODE PROCEDURE

1. Standby mode. (Power off)

3. The CRT displays the item being adjusted.

4. Press 1 or 4 on the Remote Commander toselect the item.

3-6. WHITE BALANCE ADJUSTMENTS

1. Input an entire white signal.

2. Set to Service adjustment Mode.

3. Set DCOL to "0"

4. Set the PICTURE and BRIGHT to minimum.

5. Adjust with SBRT if necessary.

6. Select GCUT and BCUT with 1 and 4 .

7. Adjust with 3 and 6 for the best white balance.

8. Set the PICTURE and BRIGHT to maximum.

9. Select GDRV and BDRV with 1 and 4 .

10. Adjust with 3 and 6 for the best white balance.

11. Reset DCOL to "1".

12. Write into the memory by pressing then .

The following adjustments should always be performed when

(1) Preparation before Confirmation

Using Variac, apply AC input voltage: 120+2VAC(or 220 + 2 VAC for KV-29AL40A/C)

1) Turn the POWER switch ON.

2) Input a white signal and set the PICTURE and BRIGHTcontrols to maximum.

3) Confirm that the voltage between C574 (+) or TP503 andground is more than: 105VDC.

(2) Hold-down Operation Confirmation

1) Connect the current meter between Pin 11 of the FBT(T504) and the PCB land where Pin 11 would normallyattach. (see figure 1.0 on next page)

2) Input a dot signal and set PICTURE and BRIGHTNESS tominimum: IABL = 100+100µA

3) Confirm the voltage of A board TP-600 is 135 ± 3VDC

4) Connect the Digital Voltmeter and the DC power supplyvia diode 1SS119 to C574 (+). (See figure 1.0 on nextpage.)

5) Increase the DC power voltage gradually until the picture blanks out.

6) Turn DC power source off immediately.

7) Read the digital voltmeter indication.

STANDARDLess than or equal to: 141.3 VDC

8) Input a white signal and set PICTURE and BRIGHTNESSto maximum: IABL = 1750+100µA

9) Repeat steps from (4) to (7).

STANDARDLess than or equal to: 141.3 VDC

SECTION 4SAFETY RELATED ADJUSTMENTS

The following adjustments should always be performed

when replacing the following components which are

marked with ] on the schematic diagram:

1) Using Variac, apply AC input voltage: 130 + 2.0 VAC(or 220.0 ± 2.0 VAC for KV-29AL40A/C).

2) Input a dot signal.

3) Set the PICTURE control and the BRIGHT control to

minimum.

4) Set to service adjustment mode.

5) Select PADJ with and .

6) Adjust with to the 0 level.7) Confirm the voltage of A BOARD TP-600 is less than

138 VDC.

8) If step 7 is not satisfied, replace the components, repeat

the above steps.

9) Adjust with and for: 135 ± 3 VDC

10) Write into the memory by pressing then
