Sony: Leading with 1080 HDVIn 2003, Sony in conjunction with JVC, Canon and Sharp collected their efforts to develop a system that would finally allow both professionals and consumers access to true High Definition acquisition at Standard Definition prices. Sony’s first professional HDV camcorder, the HVRZ1U, entered the market as the first 1080i HDV camcorder available and changed the way the world looked at High Definition forever. Starin assembled this HDV guide to make you aware of the significant advantages of Sony’s HDV equipment.

What is “HDV”?• HDV is a video format for the

user, regardless of their shooting environment or workflow, recording High Definition Video on standard DV tape, hard drive or compact flash.

• HDV is a cost-effective step up to the benefits of HD for videographers, independent film-makers, corporate and other professional users.

• HDV allows users to begin the move to HD as their workflow allows.

• HDV offers easy connectivity via i.LINK/Firewire, and fits perfectly in existing DV based Non Linear Editing (NLE) systems available from Sony and other vendors.

• HDV uses industry standard MPEG 2 coding at a data rate of 25 Mb/s, the same rate as DV and DVCAM.

Interchangeable Lens System

Interchangable Lens A high-quality, multi-purpose Carl Zeiss lens for HD video comes as standard with the HVR-Z7U. Stunning resolution and contrast is achieved thanks to the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar™ T* coating, which suppresses unwanted reflections. A specially designed wide-angle lens is also available as an option, to suit a diverse range of shooting requirements.

Natural-touch Lens OperationFocus The newly designed focus ring offers two types of manual focus, plus an auto focus mode that can be easily switched by sliding the focus ring forward or backward. When the focus ring is in the front position, the lens works in the same way as the HVR-Z1U, HVR-V1U and DSR-PD170. In this case, either manual or auto focus mode can be selected by the assignable button on the lens. On the other hand, when the focus ring is set to the rear position, the focus ring has a physical stop at infinity and works in the same way as a professional interchangeable lens, with fixed-focus-position and distance indicators.

Zoom Fast, intuitive manual-zoom response is provided by an internal gearwheel mechanism that provides accurate zoom positioning. A high-quality servo-motor provides the smooth zooming performance that industry professionals have come to rely on.

Iris The iris ring encircles the lens barrel. Manual iris adjustment is possible with an ENG-type ring system that allows fine exposure control for challenging lighting situations

Wide Range of Lenses The flexible bayonet lens attachment system allows you to use a wide range of lenses. Standard 1/3-inch HD video lenses, from manufacturers such as Fujinon and Canon, can

be attached directly to the HVR-Z7U. If you’d like to attach a 2/3-inch or 1/2-inch HD video lens, it is possible to do so by adding a standard lens adaptor from the lens manufacturer. The HVR-Z7U has12-pin lens connectors allowing compatibility with professional ENG lenses. This feature is very useful not only for those who already have these professional HD video lenses, but also for those who prefer to use HD digital cinema lenses for their unique contrast, color, and atmosphere.

Lens Compatibility With a special adaptor from Sony, it is also possible to use the lens series designed for Sony Digital SLR still cameras. By using lenses in various configurations, creative effects can be achieved. This pproach is ideal for filmmakers on a budget or those who already own lenses.

Various video lenses can be attached to the HVR-S270U and HVR-Z7U, which are both equipped with a universal standard 1/3-inch bayonet mount mechanism for quick changing of lenses.

What is HDV?

Sony developed the HDV2 format which features 1,080 effective scanning lines, using the interlaced scanning system, and 1,440 horizontal pixels. By using industry standard MPEG-2 compression (MP@H-14 for video), High Definition image data is processed into an 8 bit, 4:2:0 data stream at a data rate of 25 Mb/s. The HDV standard uses MPEG-1 Audio Layer II as an audio compression format at a sample rate of 48kHz and 16 bit resolution. The other HDV standard, (HDV1) is 1280 x 720 at 30 progressive frames / sec, which sacrifices overall static resolution to increase dynamic resolution.

Sony has long been the leader in 1080i production systems through their HDCAM and new HDCAM SR equipment. HDCAM has been used for feature film production and episodic TV programming for years, and is a world standard for high end production. Operating at a data rate of over 140 Mb/s, HDCAM certainly puts a lot more data on tape than HDV, but that doesn’t mean that there is a huge difference in recorded image quality. HDV, at 25 Mb/s, uses an efficient interframe MPEG 2 coding process that preserves high image quality by reducing the redundant or unchanging image data from frame to frame.

While it seems that 25 Mb/s is a low rate for High Definition video, keep in mind that terrestrial DTV HD broadcast is running at a maximum of 19 Mb/s. Satellite and cable HD channels and the proposed HD-DVD standards all use data rates between 6 and 20 Mb/s. The old mindset that compression is always a bad thing, or that less compression always means higher quality simply isn’t true.

Since their sensational debut in 2004, Sony HDV products adopting the HDV 1080i specification have provided and continue to provide cost-effective HD program production. With high picture performance and superb functionality, they are trusted around the world for a wide range of HD applications.

Select camcorders offer 1080/24p and 30p progressive scanning, in addition to 60i interlaced. The images captured at 24p are recorded on tape at a 60i field rate through means of 2-3 pull-down. Using a compatible nonlinear editor, this 2-3 sequence is recognized, allowing precise 24p editing of the HDV material. The 2-3 pull-down approach easily integrate into existing HDV systems operating in 60i mode.

With the addition of optional boards, the BRS-200 provides a maximum of eight SDI and one DVI-I inputs, and four SDI and two DVI-I outputs. With these multiple inputs and outputs, the BRS-200 enables image sources to be recorded on a recorder and to be played out, for example, on two monitors and one projector simultaneously.

Camera Remote Control CapabilityThe BRS-200 can also control the BRC Series cameras from a remote location. Pan/tilt/zoom, iris, and focus can all be controlled using its joystick and dials. This versatile functionality helps contribute to a highly efficient one-man peration.

Camera & Switcher presetsThe BRS-200 is able to store up to 99 camera pre-sets and 99 switcher snapshots. This makes operation easy in a live environment.
