Good Hope Church Osage Jefferson County Ohio

Church Book of Good Hope Congregation

An account of the organization of the congregation and its history from the originalrecord of events. In the year 1805, in accordance with his assignment from the LutheranMinisterium of Pennsylvania, Pastor John Stauch, who came into this area from GermanTownship in Fayette County, Pennsylvania,, set about the organization of the congregation. On September 12, 1806, a meeting was held for the purpose of raising means to defray themoving expenses of the pastor who was destined to serve in this congregation from the year1806 until 1812. The amount contributed was 1 pound, 12 shillings, and 4 pence.

The name Good Hope was given to the new congregation. The charter members aslisted in the church book were the following: (only names of the men are given)

Andrew AltGeorge OstertagMartin OstertagJohannes ReiderDavid ReidenauerJohannes HeitsJohannes ReinhardBalthasar KolbFriedrich KlecknerAdam GinderMartin Grimm

The first church council was also organized in the congregation on 12 September1806. It consisted of John Stauch, ordained minister, Balthasar Kolb, and Andrew Alt. On6 August 1808 John Reinhart was elected as a deacon in place of John Kolb. On 27 July1811 Jonas Nothstein and Valentine Sommerladen were chosen Elders f or the Reformedside of the congregation.

On 17 January 1813 John Reinhart was recommended to the congregation as anEvangelical Lutheran pastor and was chosen publicly to serve the congregation. And on14 June 1813 David Reidenauer and George Weil were elected to the council in the placeof John Reinhhart and Andrew Alt. On 2 June 1814 John Palmer was appointed elder forthe Reformed side by Pastor Mahenschmidt (Monesmith). Daniel Zwickert and JacobBender were appointed wardens (Vorsteher) by John Reinhart.

In the year 1815 Christian Ostertag and John George Weil were appointed Wardensby John Reinhart , the Lutheran pastor. In the year 1818 John Bauer and John Heits wereappointed Wardens. In 1823 John Pfeifer and Daniel Swickert were appointed Wardens, and in 1825 John Leitsch was appointed Warden.

Important:The people of Good Hope prospered and lived in peace until the year 1816. Then a

great misfortune occurred when the church was closed by the whole congregation againstMartin Swickard, one of their associates. He was a liberal and most active man. But anofffense was taken on account of an oversight and misunderstanding in a land deal.

"But, God be praised! For men soon learn that their zeal for the glory of Godurges the speedy building of a house for divine worship. Hence, to carry out the purpose,a building committee was appointed consisting of Martin Ostertag, Jacob Moschrosch andSamuel Hales. Andrew Alt, George Weil and Christian Ostertag were appointed Trusteesand John Reinhart, the pastor, was appointed Treasurer.

Index of Parents in the Good Hope Baptisms

After the names of the parents the numbers given are those which direct the readerto the number where the baptism is to be found in the list of congregational baptisms. Inmost cases the present usage when known is followed in spelling of both family and personalnames. This is done in order to facilitate the location of the baptisms by those who are notfamiliar with older forms of the names. In most cases we do not have maiden names of themothers in the records.

Communion Records of Good Hope

There are few early membership records for Good Hope. There are no lists ofaccessions or dismissals. The list of charter members from 1805 and the list of contrib-utors to the building fund for the church in 1816 are our only source for general member-ship information prior to the first communion record which is an undated list. No pastoris credited with this communion. However, from the names on the list, and comparison ofthe confirmation records, an estimate from 1842 to 1860 would seem right. Spelling of thenames is that given in the original lists. The script is often very poor and faded.

The Congregation of Good Hope

By Dr. Schilling

The hamlet of Bowling Green, now Osage, was born at almost the same time as theState of Ohio. Both the village and church are located in the centre of Section 25 given toMartin Swickard by the government for services rendered with General Crawford, who wasdefeated at Sandusky, June 6, 1782.

Swickard was born in Germany in 1745, captured at Trenton, New Jersey, December26, 1778. He was married twice and had eleven children, received the presidential patent forSection No. 25, on January 10, 1807, from Thomas Jefferson. He was Sergeant in the war of1812, and died May 22, 1841. He belonged to Good Hope congregation until 1816 when itwas recorded by the pastor that "the devil had entered Martin Swickard" and the doors of thechurch were closed against him". (This statement was withdrawn. Editor). Under the preach-ing of the Rev. James Finley, Martin and his wife Christina helped organize and then becamecharter members of Tabor Methodist Episcopal Church and were buried in its cemetery. Hecould speak only the German language.

German- speaking pioneers settled on his (Swickard) lands and soon a hamlet was es-etablished, never exceeding a dozen houses, including grocery, wagon maker, blacksmith, and cooper-shop. The missionary followed closely, the Lutherans taking the membersbers of the Reformed Church under their wings. Rev. Mr. Snodgrass of the Island CreekPresbyterian Church tried without success to edge the Lutherans out of Bowling Green in1800, preaching in the house of Henry Pittenger.

Johannes Stauch, later known as John Stough, came from Maryland into FayetteCounty, Pennsylvania, and from Jacobs Parish there did mission work in Ohio as a teacherand preacher to those of his language though he was not ordained until some years later. On Sunday afternoons he read sermons and prayers of the church, and at the urgent requestof the people, performed marriage ceremonies without right of church or state until 1804,That year he was ordained by the Ministerium fof Pennsylvania. In 1806 the Ministeriumpassed a resolution that "Johannes Stauch shall be paid for his labors outside the congrega-tion he has accepted in the State of Ohio, just as are other travelling preachers". This amount-was just a little over $30 per month. His circuit included Jefferson, Columbiana, and Trum-Counties.

He preached in Bowling Green in 1805, organizing the Church and calling it GoodHope, with the following charter members: Martin Ostertag, Andrew Alt, Georg Oestertag,Johannes Reider, David Reidenauer Johannes Heits, Sr., Johannes Rhinehard, Balthasar Kolb,Friederich Kleidner, Adam Zinder and Martin Grimm.

On September 12, 1806 the congregation assembled to consider means for defray-ing the moving expenses of the pastor from Western Pennsylvania to Bowling Green by wag-on. It is the opinion of the writer that Stauch was the first Lutheran minister in eastern Ohio,if not of all Ohio. Professor Prince of Springfield is surely in error in giving that honor toRev. Forster, for Stauch was in Ohio one or two years in advance , and had urged Forster tocome to Ohio. Missionary Paul Henkle organized churches in Southern Ohio, and historianscredit him with organizing his first church in 1808, three years after Good Hope was organiz-ed. Stauch travelled 1300 miles in 20 days, preached 67 times and baptized 212 children. Hewas the regular pastor of Good Hope from 1806 until 1812, In that time he baptized 35 andalso confirmed 35 persons. He was also regular pastor at Lisbon at the same time. In 1809he had 505 communicants, in 14 congregations and three schools. He organized and was thepresident of the first Lutheran Synod in Ohio. He lies in the Lutheran Cemetery at Lisbon.

The first church officers appointed by Father Stauch were two deacons, Andreas Aultand Balthasar Kolb. (Balsor Culp). Andreas Ault was a native of eastern Pennsylvania. He

27

had settled on Island Creek in 1795 on land owned by Bezlee Wells,, founder of Steubenville. He was born in 1760 and engaged in privateering during the American Revolution. He wascaptured while bringing a prize into the port of Philadelphia, not knowing that the British hadalready taken possession of the city. He was sent as a prisoner to England, but after escapingto America, settled at Redstone, Pennsylvania, before coming to the Northwest Territory.

Johannes Rheinhard (John Reinhart) was born March 14, 1776. At the organizationof Good Hope he became a charter member and later, June 7, 1812 was elected as pastor. He died on June 6, 1861, and is buried in Good Hope Cemetery between his two wives, thefirst, Susanna, died February 9, 1806, and Barbara who died October 9, 1857. He became anoted minister among the early German pioneers. On September 12, 1818 he met with othersin Somerst, Perry County, Ohio, September 12, 1818, and helped to organize the first OhioSynod. Stauch was then preaching at Lisbon, Ohio. Rhinehart founded other churches, in thestate, the nearest being St. Paul's in Salem, now Annapolis, in 1814, just twelve years after thetown was laide out. He preached only the German language.

Balsor Culp was born in Germany in 1754. He was a Hessian soldier in the Revolutionand had been captured by Washington at Trenton in 1776. He came from Virginia to Ohio in1798. He had been married twice and had five children, only one of whom ever joined theLutheran Church. In February 1816 he laid out New Somerset, naming it after Somerset, inPennsylvania. He died June 4, 1847, in his ninety-third year. And he lies buried in the NewSomerset M. E. Cemetery. He never learned to speak, read, or write the English language.

In 1820 Balsor Culp found a seedling apple tree growing on his farm that producedapples of a superior size and quality. He showed them to Samuel Wood, who was a profess-ional nurseryman and apple-grafter from Smithfield, Ohio. Wood became enthusiastic andgrew them for sale. Alexander McLain, another nurseryman, also became enthusiastic overthe apple, but disliking the Hessians, renamed it the "Jackson" after his favorite hero.

John Rhinehart had succeeded Balsor Culp as deacon August 6, 1808. About 1811some trouble arose in the congregation causing a division. The Reformed party on July 27,1811 elected Jonas Nothstein and Valentine Sommerladen as elders. On June 4, 1812, DavidReidenauerand Georg Weil (George Wiles) were elected successers to Reinhart and Ault.

At the time when Rev. William Manesmith was the Reformed pastor, John Palmer, acorporal in the company of Captain William Stoks in the War of 1812 and Andrew Ault wereelected elders, and Daniel Swickard and Jacob Bender as deacons. In 1815 Christian Easter-day and John George Wiles were deacons.

Events that follow show that the language question checked the spread of the deve-lopment of the Lutheran church in Ohio. Paul Henkle, a co-worker with Stauch, saw this quiteearly, but the church in general did not. Although the congregation dwelt in harmony andwas prosperous and increasing in membership until 1816, an error in the title to the land gaverise to a disagreement resulting in a division. Some steps were taken to build a new church, but the Reformed side moved the old log structure to a new site near Shelly's school house, where members of 25 or 30 families lie in its neglected cemetery.

A building committee was appointed consisting of Martin Oestertag, Jacob Moschrosch, and Samuel Haley; Three trustees were appointed: Andreas Ault, George Weil, and Christ ianOestertag. John Rhinehart was chosen treasurer. They raised $371.25 and built a framechurch thus restoring harmony. In 1852 this building was removed from its foundation to aplace a few hundred feet eastward and used as a cooper shop. A new building for the churchwas erected on nearly the same foundation. It cost $500.

John Bauer (Bower) and John Heits became deacons in 1818, John Pfeifer andDaniel Swickard in 1823. Jacob Teitsch became a deacon in 1825. John Rhinehart preach-ed at Good Hope from 1812 to 1825 and was succeeded by James Manning , who was thefirst to preach in the English language. He also preached at Tunnel Mill on Yellow Creek, and

28

after twelve years he established the First Lutheran Church of Ross Township. This was onMay 13, 1837. Tunnel Mill was named from a tunnel that connects through a narrow hill

a bend in the creek. It was built by Abner Moore in 1815. The place was also called Mutch-ell's Salt Works, but this was afterward changed by the Post Office Department to Holt.

The church's name was changed to Bethel, and the rules and ordinances were signedin the pastorate of Rev. Bartholomew on July 10, 1842. The church building was of brickwith a lofty pulpit so high that when Rev. Sparks preached, he had almost to stretch his neckto appear above the railing. Rev. Sparks was very much stooped and a great user of tobacco, and invariably preached with his mouth full of his favorite weed, often stopping between sen-tences to spit or refill. In 1873 a new frame building was dedicted by Rev. William A. Passa-vant, though later this building was removed to Wellsville for the new Zion congregation thatwas established there. James Manning was the first minister at Bethel and third at Good Hope.He was a typical backwoodsman, but an earnest and great worker in the Master's vinyard. Hecontinued at Bethel and Good Hope until 1839 when he was succeeded by Benjamin Pope.He was followed by Amos Bartholomew in 1843, David Sparks in 1848, and George Baugh-man on July 1 1849, then by D. D. Sweeney, on October 1, 1850. David Sparks there for thesecond time January 1, 1853, and James Manning, also the second time, November 1, 1859.

Manning was an outspoken patriot. As the great Civil War was brewing and politicialexcitement was a t high tide, he felt justified to speak out as many of his members espousedthe "copperhead" position, upholding Valandingham as their leader, and sympathizing withthe Souoh so much that the neighborhood was nicknamed "Little Dixie". One of Manning'ssons was killed at the Battle of Missionary Ridge defending his country. Manning expressedhimself without fear or favor. He was fond of good dinners and one time at Adam Culp'shouse, after eating a quantity of new sausage and reaching for more, remarked that he "likedboth hogs and Democrats . (Mr. Culp,, leading member of the church at Bethel, was a Demo-crat), "but believed he liked hogs best".

The Rev. Dr. Kemerer opined that Manning had three stumbling blocks: the devil, aDemocrat, and a Methodist; but the writer (presumably Dr. Schilling) believes that in Mann-ings day the chief theological equipment was the ability to fight Calvinism and New-Lightismand he was especially fitted to do just that. During his last pastorate at Bowling Green thispastor kept Good Hope irritated by his Union patriotism. The Pittsburgh Synod was notifiedand sent a minister to quiet the trouble. That Sunday the stranger preached and Manning wasan interested listener. The theme was "bridling the unruly tongue, the virtue of caution, andpatience for the views of others". It was a sermon intended for the benefit of all. After the ser-mon, Manning complimented the preacher for his "fine talk", expressing his opinion that itwas difficult to bridle the unruly tongue when it was running in the right direction, and thenproceeded to mortify the whole congregation by a 15 minute outburst denouncing slavery, copperheads, secession, Valandingham, and the Democrat party in particular.

Manning held the fort in "little Dixie" until June 1, 1864, when he was succeeded byJacob Singer who ministered to both congregations for fourteen years. Pastor Singer wassucceeded June 30, 1878 by Rev. A. H. Kinnard. That was also the date of the last Germanservice held in Good Hope. Schilling lists, in debatable order, the pastorates of Bougher,J. W. Myers, Meisner, Baker, Holloway, D. M. Kemerer, Reber, and J. J. Myers. Under the

the pastorate of the Rev. Charles E. Reed, trouble arose which resulted in the loss of overhalf of the membership. The present pastor (sic) is J. C. F. Rupp, 1914 -.30. The churchwas rechartered in this period. End of the Schilling document.

Conclusion: The congregation at Osage struggled along through the early 1900'sreduced to a membership of 25 to 30, and then 15 to 20, and finally, only 5 to 10 members.

By 1931 the congregation was reported as being without pastor, with only two members left. The Ohio Synod ignored a Board of American Missions request to receive the congregation

by transfer from the Pittsburgh Synod. The 1932 Minutes of the Pittsburgh Synod shows theGood Hope congregation as inactive.: Thereafter no reports were given and it was removed.
