WHAT DOES SOPA MEAN?
SOPA is a United States Anti Piracy Bill to expand the ability of the U.S. law enforcement to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.
• Primary focus of the SOPA legislation- prevent the threat of foreign sites hosting pirated material.
• Provides intellectual property owners in the United States the ability to target foreign sites against whom they have a copyright claim.

HOW SOPA WORKS?
• The proposed bill gives the U.S. government through the office of the Attorney General the power to pursue court orders against any site believing to be engaged in copyright infringement.
• The Act puts pressure on companies and services like Internet service providers, search engines, payment network providers and Internet advertising services within the United States, to block/discontinue their services to the foreign infringing websites.
• If the Act becomes law, the above entities will have to comply with a strict set of rules (designed to cut off the foreign infringing site) if the attorney general serves them a court order. They will have to act on those rules within five days of receiving the court order.

Cont..• the Act requires: (i) Internet Service Providers to block users within the
United States from accessing the infringing site. (ii) search engines will have to remove all direct hyperlinks
to an infringing site. (iii) payment network providers would be required to cut off
funds to infringing sites. (iv) advertising services wouldn't be allowed to serve up ads
on the infringing site nor could they produce any advertisements for the site itself.
Eg: If Site X has infringed copyright law, services connected to Site X like advertisers, payment processor etc will have to remove Site X from its services within 5 days or will be considered to be violating the law. A search engine (eg: Google) which has indexed Site X, will have to remove it from its listings and the DNS registry which directs queries regarding Site X to the correct IP will have to remove the same from its Registry. Both the search engine and the DNS registry will have to do so within five days or they shall be considered to be violating the law.

• Entire website can be blocked irrespective of the amount of infringing content.

PROTEST
• Tumblr, Mozilla, Techdirt, the Center for Democracy and Technology were among many Internet companies that protested by participating in American Censorship Day On November 16, 2011. They displayed black banners over their site logos with the words "STOP CENSORSHIP".
• Reddit blacked out its site for twelve hours on January 18, 2012.
• Google put a big black box over the prominent logo on its homepage with a link to a page from which users could sign a petition entitled “Tell Congress: Don’t censor the Web”. Google collected more than 7 million signatures from the United States.
• Other major internet sites such as Twitter, Yahoo, Amazon, AOL, LinkedIn, IAC, eBay, PayPal, Wordpress and Wikipedia committed to an "unprecedented" internet blackout on January 18, 2012.
