BACKGROUND

The SingHealth Medical Technology Oce (MTO) aims to bring novel healthcare technology solutions to patients and caregivers. We oer a convenient, single point of contact by bringing together key partners and skill sets, both within and outside the SingHealth cluster.

Through our network of clinicians and alliances, we provide assistance and guidance through every aspect of a healthcare product's development lifecycle. This enables both the identication of high impact unmet needs and the translation of ideas into validated products.

KEY OBJECTIVES

Enable cross-functional translational research that meets high-impact, unmet clinical needs.

Develop solutions which can be commercialised.

Develop clinician innovators who can take their ideas to the next level.

CORE STRENGTHS

Our core strength is our clinicians, who provide valuable inputs on new projects and support the clinical development of products. We also have partnerships that support advanced prototyping, testing and validation.

We are currently engaged in surgical areas such as Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT), Head & Neck, Orthopedics, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and Gastrointestinal Surgery. We are also open to developing new healthcare technologies that have impact in improving patients’ lives.

COLLABORATIVE OPPORTUNITIES

We collaborate with private sector players such as MNCs, SMEs, startups, as well as public sector entities such as universities. We also work with government organisations such as Economic Development Board (EDB) and Standards, Productivity and Innovation Board (SPRING), and research institutions such as Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). Within the cluster, we partner with SingHealth clinicians and allied health professionals in taking their ideas towards translation. Our clinicians are also involved in providing clinical opinions to investment groups and startups.

MTO works on translational projects, assisting with the trials, regulatory approvals and the commercialisation steps that must be completed before they can benet patients. We partner with technology creators and seek initial funding from national grants to help with Proof of Concept (POC) and Proof of Value (POV) demonstrations of new medical technologies. During this phase, we le for patent protection of our Intellectual Property (IP). This is with the aim of developing the product further through partnership with a commercial entity, via a licensing/co-development agreement. For partners who do not have access to a Technology Transfer Oce (TTO), we facilitate ling for intellectual property protection through the SingHealth IP Oce (SHIP).

NOTEWORTHY ACHIEVEMENTS

Awarded a grant from Singapore MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) for our project developed in partnership with surgeons in the Surgical Oncology and Colorectal Surgery departments.

Supported a startup in USA to conduct a cadaver study at our Surgical Skills facility in Academia; and assisting them in the initiation of a clinical trial for their new medical device.

Supporting a rst-in-human clinical trial for the ENT department in collaboration with National University of Singapore (NUS), for a novel device-based approach to introduce a surgically implanted prosthesis for a common procedure.

OUR TEAM

Our team consists of both clinicians and engineers with experience in the medical device industry, at companies such as Covidien, Johnson & Johnson, Siemens Medical and St. Jude Medical. About half of our team has been trained through the Singapore-Stanford Biodesign program at Stanford University. We also draw upon the expertise of an advisory panel consisting of experienced med-tech veterans.
