85th ANNUAL WESTERN CANADA REGION CONFERENCE
Hello fellow Soroptimist Members. This is my personal invitation for you to join us in Harrison Hot
Springs, British Columbia, for our Soroptimist Western Canada Region Annual Conference. The theme,
Change, Challenge and Opportunity continues again this year.
Here are some of the highlights of this year’s conference:
• Harrison resort mineral hot pools
• A Sock Hop and lip sync contest where SI Central Alberta will defend their title
• An optional boat cruise on Thursday afternoon
• Golf
• Shopping at Local Artisans
As always, we are kicking off the conference on Thursday evening with our Welcoming Reception. Your
Western Canada Region Board and Conference Chairs will be your hosts.
Our keynote speaker is Tara Wilkie. Tara’s keynote address will discuss her work with persons who have
been trafficked, the elements of human trafficking, and how these experiences propel her to continue
to stand up for those in need.
This year we have two SIA guests attending our conference. We are honoured to have SIA President
Dawn Marie Lemonds, and SIA Executive Director & CEO Elizabeth Lucas.
We also have a special workshop on Thursday for voting delegates hosted by our Parliamentarian
Angela Bunting. As this is an election year this is a must for first time delegates, but seasoned delegates
are also encouraged to attend.
All the information you need is attached in the Call to Conference. Please read it carefully and share
this with your club members and encourage all members to attend.
Be sure and book your room and register soon, space is limited. I look forward to seeing you all in
Harrison Hot Springs.
Sincerely,
Rita Mackenzie

We want this year’s Conference attendees to be able to enjoy the beautiful Harrison Resort Hot Pools
as much as possible. So, Thursday night’s entertainment will be all about bonding with other
Soroptimists in the Pool. After our Welcoming Reception and a couple of fun games it’s off to change
into our bathing suits and head for the pools!
Some of us will remember the good old Sock Hops from our High School Days. We are bringing it back
for Friday night. Music will be courtesy of Sir Lancelot Entertainment and we will head back into the
past with tunes from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. You might want to practice some of these Golden
Oldies “The Twist”, “The Hustle”, “Disco Dance Moves”, and “The Wahtusi.” There will be prizes for the
best costume, dance contests plus much more.
Our ever so popular Lip Sync contest continues again this year. Will you be a contender for the number
one spot? Don’t forget to include your song in the registration package so that Sir Lancelot has your song
ready.

85th ANNUAL WESTERN CANADA REGION CONFERENCE
February 14, 2018
Hello Western Canada Region Members!
I hope you are as excited as I am about attending your up coming Region Conference, my first ever in your
beautiful area! I am so pleased to be your Official Visitor and look forward as we work and play together and
embrace Governor Rita’s theme of Change, Challenge and Opportunities as it applies to our personal
membership, that of our clubs, our Regions and SIA!
I view change as a time of Evolution rather than Revolution. For that to happen- we each need to find what
that means at every level of the organization. I can’t wait to meet you, listen to your experiences and ideas,
celebrate and learn with you as we work together to refresh and renew the love and support we have for
Soroptimist.
Beware. I am a hugger and haven’t met a Soroptimist yet that I haven’t honored for the gifts you each bring to
our organization on behalf of the women and girls-many facing extreme obstacles- who we serve through our
programs.
I hope to see you soon in Canada- and a few months later in beautiful Yokohama at our 45th Biennial
Convention!

tions to a new tomorrow. As Soroptimist International of the
America’s Executive Director & CEO, Lucas oversees the overall
direction setting and implementation of the organization’s
transformation in 21 countries and territories. She supports
volunteers and staff as they increase the organization’s collective
impact through their brand-unifying Dream Programs. Over the
last five years, those efforts have resulted in an increase in the
number of women reached through the Live Your Awards by 20%;
increased the amount of funding given to women by 29%; and
launched our newest Dream program, Dream It, Be It, reaching
20,000 girls in two years. She has also helped to increase our funds
raised by 31% and to slow our membership decline from a 3% loss
rate to a 1% loss rate.
In her previous roles, she spent 15 years with the American Massage Therapy Association and the
Massage Therapy Foundation. As their executive director, she guided the strategic development of both
organizations. Her results ranged from the creation of a global expansion strategy to growing the
organization two-fold; establishing research conferences and online education; and successfully
advocating for state laws regulating the profession.
Her prior association experience in the safety, health and environmental industries is how she first
started to shape public policy, legislation and regulation. As a small business owner, she assisted
Fortune 500 companies from the sectors of consumer package goods, financial services,
pharmaceuticals and heavy equipment in their new product introduction and sales training. She began
her career in retail merchandising where she learned to identify trends around the globe and adapt
them for local consumption.

One of SI of the Langleys club’s mottos is “it has to be fun”. I am well equipped to keep that in the
forefront. I use humour and an optimistic view of situations toward a conclusion of a project or
situation.
I am very much a lead from the front type of person, and am tenacious and detail oriented at a task
but quick to make sure that the group/team as a whole reaps the joys of accomplishment.
I do not see value in spending time telling you about what I am going to do. I prefer to use that time
just getting the job done.
I like to know members well so I can learn their skills. When I match those skills to tasks it is done well
and the member receives satisfaction.
I praise our members in public and question them privately.
Members of SI of the Langleys say they appreciate that I gain consensus and cooperation in our club
in order to ensure harmony. They say this makes it easier to focus on our goals and to achieve them.
I agree to the nomination and hereby certify that the above information to be true.

Candidate for Board Secretary – Bonnie Vestrum, SI Central Alberta
RESUME FOR THE POSITION OF BOARD SECRETARY
SOROPTIMIST EXPERIENCE
Joined SI of Central Alberta in September, 2013
November, 2013 – June, 2015 – Club Secretary
June, 2015 – December, 2015 – Club Vice President
December, 2015 – April, 2017 – Club President
April, 2017 to date – Western Canada Region Board Secretary
September, 2017 to date – Program Pillar, SI of Central Alberta
To begin, I want to say that being a part of Soroptimist has been the most fulfilling, fun, informative
and engaging organization I have yet to experience. I am whole-heartedly dedicated to the mission
and to the global positive impact on women and girls. When I joined SI of Central Alberta, I kind of
hit the ground running. The ladies were so welcoming and worked so well together and were very
much about involving new Members in whatever way possible, right away. The first year I joined I
became Club Secretary, within a couple of months, and have held a position on the Club Board ever
since. In April of 2017 the Western Canada Region Board Secretary stepped down and I was thrilled
to vie for the position as I had run for the position back in 2014 when I lost to Kim Bush. I was
honoured to be accepted for the position of Western Canada Board Secretary, and would continue to
be honoured to resume this role for the next Biennium.
Since my first year as a Member or Soroptimist International of Central Alberta I have Chaired our
Annual Mother/Daughter Conference. This Conference is the most enjoyable task that I have had the
opportunity to be a part of. Each year we have experienced increased participation and the
momentum continues. Although I participate in all of the SI of Central Alberta programs, the Mother/
Daughter Conference is the dearest to me.
I think the various roles at Club level, and my willing participation in each, has enhanced my ability to
stand on the Western Canada Region Board in that I have gained an understanding of the struggles,
victories and accomplishments that one small group of ladies can achieve, with common goals and
beliefs. As current Secretary of the Western Canada Region Board, I have discovered that there are
many commonalities with the region clubs, albeit we do things differently, we are all on the same
page. Being given an opportunity to see the “big picture” has created confidence and engagement
for me, at Club level and at Region level. I find myself thinking about ways to expand our services and
Soroptimist International of the Americas

programs and want to contribute when and where I can. As mentioned above, I hit the ground
running and I am looking forward to continuing that momentum. Lastly, I cherish the friendships I
have made and the support I have seen and received from Members throughout the Region.
Attended the following conferences/conventions:
I have attended the Western Canada Region Conference every year since joining, with the exception
of 2014. My daughter’s dance recital was on the same weekend as Conference that year. I have also
attended two Retreats, one as a Member (President of my Club) and the most recent one as Western
Canada Board Secretary. Each of these experiences allowed me to learn new things, to develop new,
and strengthen existing relationships with sister club members, and they continue to rekindle my
dedication to Soroptimist each year.
WORK EXPERIENCE
I have more than 30 years experience in an office environment, including several years as a Personal
Assistant (Secretary). My career includes Executive Secretary, Human Resource Administrator,
promoted to Program Manager in Disability Services, in addition to a 10-year stint where I worked as
an Independent Software Instructor/Consultant (registered in Ontario and in Alberta with the Ministry
of Colleges and Universities as a Commercial Software Instructor). In this timeframe I also researched,
developed and wrote Software Training Programs, Policies and Procedures Manuals as well as
software Reference Manuals for a number of Organizations and Government Departments.
My current position, Administrative Support for the Alberta Central Zone Acute Care Pharmacy
Systems Manager entails a wide variety of tasks. My primary role is to directly support the Systems
Manager whose role is to ensure operational processes continue to improve Pharmacy Services for
the 23 Central Zone Hospital Pharmacy sites that make up Central Zone (with roughly 250 staff
members). This includes notification and follow-up of Drug Recalls, Inventory/Order Entry Data
Collection and Compilation, Turn Around Time and Archive Records Management, Form
Development, SharePoint Administrator, facilitation of online Training Sessions and creating “How To”
Guides for software tasks specific to Pharmacy Services.
INTERESTS AND HOBBIES
As for Interests and Hobbies, that has changed over the years. At present, with a young, active, only
child (daughter - 14), who lost her father earlier this year, a lot of my focus has been on her. We do
crafts together, we play games together, we bake, we go to movies, go shopping, sometimes just
hang out and talk. I also have a 5 year old dog and a 6 month old puppy, a partner who has health
issues, no family close by, a fulltime job and Soroptimist, so there isn’t a great deal of time to partake
in personal interests and hobbies. That said, I do enjoy scrapbooking, cooking and watching videos
to improve/upkeep my computer skills. I also enjoy doing computer artwork, so I get to make our
Club posters and do web updates for our Club events.

AWARDS AND OTHER VOLUNTEER HISTORY
I have participated in many volunteer activities but have not been an active member in any until
Soroptimist. For a few years I made costumes for my daughter and her dance classmates, and every
year, for 10 years now, I volunteer my time back stage at recital. I have volunteered with seniors in
the past, including teaching them how to use their computer and just spending time talking with
them.
CONCLUSION
In closing, what I believe I currently bring to the table as Secretary of the Western Canada Region
Board for Soroptimist International is my dedication to our mission, my exemplary computer skills, my
respect for the all of the Board Members and the importance of the work we do, and a good sense of
humor. I feel I contribute to the collective impact and hope to continue in this role and look forward
to working with the newly elected Western Canada Region Board.
