Surf Ski

The fastest single self propelled craft on water, full stop. Combine balance, a rock solid core, arm strength seen at Olympic rower level with zero fear to cut through swell at speed catching air off the backs of waves and you will begin to understand the level of skill required to pilot one of these rocket ships across the ocean.

Typical course length: 600m

Paddle Board

Still used by Surf Life Savers across Australia and the globe, this discipline is designed to deliver a surf life saver to a rescue in a rapid manor through heavy surf whilst providing a floating platform for retrieval of a swimmer in distress. The arms, back and core are must in this event pushing the weight of up to sometimes 3 people through large swell back to the beach.

Typical course length: 500m

Swim

This iconic event speaks for itself. An open ocean swim beginning with a sprint off the beach and requiring athletes to navigate broken surf before swimming around a set course finishing back on the beach and sprint to the finish line. Bodysurfing waves back into the finish can make or break a winning result.

Typical course length: 400m

Ironman / Ironwoman

A combination of Surf Ski, Paddle Board and Swim, this is the most exciting and ultimate test of an athlete’s mental and physical constitution. At interchange, at the finishing sprint, catching the lucky wave, a race can be won or lost in an instant.

Typical race time: 15 – 30 minutes depending on conditions and course layout.

Taplin Relay

This is a multi disciplined team style relay event. It involves 2 surf skiers, 2 paddle boarders and 2 swimmers. Each of the 6 competitors is responsible for a specific discipline and leg of the race.

Typical race time: 15 – 30 minutes depending on conditions and course layout.

Beach Flags

A rapid sprint across soft sand to capture a single flag before an opponent. This stand alone discipline requires a series of randomly paired of sprinters to start form a prone position lying on the stomach, pop up and sprint 20m to retrieve a single baton or ‘flag’. Athletes are in direct competition and are slowly eliminated should they fail to capture the flag. Last athlete standing wins.

Typical course length: 20m

DISCIPLINES: SKI TAPLIN IRON SWIM BOARD FLAGS

With an overall multi-disciplined fitness and aquatic insight a navy seal would be envious of, our athletes are recognized worldwide as the fittest professional athletes in Australian mainstream sport, bar none.

The category of surf sports itself was introduced in the early 1900’s, designed to train Australian Surf Life Savers to be both physically and mentally fit to undertake rescues in the direst of aquatic conditions. They had to be the best, the fittest, the most knowledgeable for one reason, to save human life. Over 100 years later, this sentiment still rings true.

Sitting at the most elite level of Surf Sports globally, these men and women epitomize the meaning of health, wellbeing, courage and steadfast determination. All accredited Surf Life Savers, SOS is blessed with ambassadors who are not only symbols of physical prowess but also carry undoubtedly the most respected core values of any elite athlete.

Live TV (Fox Sports)

Arguably the biggest draw card for SOS 2016 / 2017 is a live Fox Sports broadcast. Designed to elevate the Series in line with many of Australia’s other tier 1 summer sports. Commitments have been made between Fox Sports and SOS working towards making this an absolute priority.

Club Premier League

The introduction of a world first club style point score league within the SOS Series. It will see the very best 8 female and 8 male athletes from respective major surf clubs around Australia battle it out for supremacy as Australia’s number 1 surf club.

Re Brand

Spanning across all assets including digital, telecast, on beach and news media. Communicating the youth, vibrance, professionalism and quintessentially Australian values that the SOS series is built on. This rebrand will capitalize on the aggressive growth the series has experienced over the past 2 years. It will bring SOS into line with other tier 1 Australian sports with a completely updated look and feel.

Increased Prize Pool

2016 - 2017 will see an increased prize pool to over $250,000. This will lure to the very best in the world to go head to head at each event.

Corporate Hospitality Focus

Via partnerships with Coates Hire we are focused on providing innovative ways to connect corporate partners with our unique sport and with each other. 2016 - 2017 will see a one of a kind SOS ‘Super Box’. A raised, fully licensed enclosed and dedicated corporate structure directly on the beach and abutting the course itself.

New Look PR and Media Team

In 2016 - 2017 SOS is building on an already strong Media and PR team with an increase in boots on the ground creating exposure for the sport, it’s athletes and partners alike.

SEASON 2016 / 2017 SNAP SHOT

Focus On Community Engagement

2015 - 2016 saw a successful pilot program to connect elite athletes with local communities through schools visits and nipper clinics. Building on this success, 4 athletes will spend the entire week visiting local schools around each event of the 2016 - 2017 SOS series spreading a ‘Surf Safe’ message.
