Tools required: A pair of scissors, blackpermanent ink marker, tape, spray contactadhesive (for carpet), sharp knife or box-cutter, a long straight edge or ruler, a phillipshead screwdriver, a 7/16 inch combinationwrench or ratcheting combination wrench(Gearwrench).

Note: This kit adds Hushmat to thefootwell floor and transmission coverareas of the vehicle, as this is where themost noise and heat are coming from. Ifyou would like to also cover the footwellside, the underseat area, the rearwardtransmission tunnel area, the rearseat/shelf/sides areas, you will need anadditional 409-013 kit. This will cut downon noise and heat even more, but will alsorequire more of the interior to be removedand replaced.

Preparation:1. Remove the two template page at the end

of these instructions. Use the pair of scissorsto cut out the two areas mared “Cut Out”.

2. Lay one sheet of insulating material on atable with the foil side facing upwards. Thereshould be a non-stick wax paper mateiral onthe bottom of the insulating materials to keepthe material from sticking to the worktable.Tape the template to the insulating material. Then use the sharp knife or boxcutter to cutout the two areas that you cut out in Step 1.

3. Lay another rectangular sheet of insulatingmaterial on the worktable. Cut the material indown the middle so that it is now shaped liketwo squares.

Interior Removal:4. The seats do not need to be removed toinstall the Hushmat in the footwell andtransmission cover area. However, it doesmake access to the area easier. If youchoose to remove the seats, you will firstneed to slide the seat backward to exposethe front seat slider bolts. Then remove theseat cushions. Use a 7/16” combinationwrench to loosen and remove the eight (8)nuts/bolts that hold the seats to the front seatsliders. Then loosen and remove the six (6)nuts/bolts that hold the seat sliders to thefloor. Remove the seatbacks, seat bottoms &seat rails. Save the hardware for later reuse.

5. Remove the footwell rubber floor mats andfootwell carpet. The carpet at the far rightand left sides of the footwell will not beremoved. Also remove the carpet coveringthe transmission cover. Note that there maybe retaining snaps securing the footwellcarpets. These will have to be carefullyunsnapped so as not to tear the snaps out ofthe carpet.

6. On our car, we removed the transmissioncover from the vehicle and applied Hushmatto it. However, removing the transmissioncover is unnecessary and the Hushmat canbe applied with the cover still installed in thevehicle. This is the preferred methodbecause the transmission cover is sealed tothe floor which makes it difficult to remove.

Sheet Installation:7. PLEASE IGNORE THE HUSHMAT THATHAS BEEN APPLIED TO THETRANSMISSION TUNNEL COVER IN THEFOLLOWING PHOTOS. THE PREFERREDMETHOD OF INSTALLATION IS TO APPLYHUSHMAT TO THE FLOOR FIRST ANDTHEN TO THE TRANSMISSION COVER.

8. Obtain a full sheet of insulating material.Leaving the wax paper in place, set thesheet in the right side footwell with theforward edge at the line where the floorboardand the toeboard meet. The long length of

the sheet should run from the front rightcorner back towards the rear of the car.

9. Once the position and fitment of theinsulating material is confirmed, remove afew inches of the wax paper backing from theinsulating material and apply the material tothe floor. Then pull away the rest of the waxpaper while pushing down on the insulatingmaterial and directing it into the nooks, crannies and folds of the floor. Take note ofany carpet retaining snaps on the floorthat will be covered up by insulatingmaterial. Use the black permanent inkmarker to circle the locations of thosecovered carpet retaining snaps once theinsulating material has been laid down.

10. Gather the two “almost square” Hushmatsheets that resulted from cutting a insulatingmaterial sheet in half back on Step 3.Leaving the wax paper backing place, apply one “almost square” insulating materialsheet onto the toeboard just forward of thesheet laid down on the floor in Step 9. Thistime the long edge will lay from left to right inthe vehicle. You may find that there is a wireharness that is in the way at the top of thesheet. If so, use the black permanent markerto mark the location of the wire harness onthe left and the right sides of the Hushmatsheet. Take the marked sheet to theworkbench and use the box-cutter to cut thesheet shorter so that it fits below the wireharness. You can use a straightedge toconnect the marks for a cleaner installation.

11. Double check the fitment of the sheet intothe vehicle. Remark and recut the sheet ifnecessary. Then remove the wax paperbacking and apply the sheet to the vehicle.

12. You will notice that there is a strip offloorboard between the edge of the Hushmatsheet and the transmission tunnel cover. This strip will be covered next. Gather one ofthe discarded pieces of wax paper backingand the black permanent marker. Lay the

wax paper backing onto the area where theexposed strip of metal is. Use the blackmarker to draw an outline of the area ontothe wax paper. Then take the wax paper overto the workbench. Apply the wax paper to thefoil side of a sheet of Hushmat. Use the boxcutters to cut the shape of the patch into theHushmat sheet. Leaving the wax paperbacking of the new patch in place, apply it tothe area to confirm that there will not be anylarge gaps between the Hushmat sheetalready in place and the new patch. Recut ifnecessary. Once satisfied with the shape, remove the wax paper backing and apply thepatch to the floorboard. The patch panel canbe stretched or shrunk a bit while installing, but it is difficult to turn. So, attempt to line upthe patch edge with the sheet edge and thenspread the sheet against the floor towardsthe transmission cover. Take note of anycarpet retaining snaps or bolts on thefloor that will be covered up by insulatingmaterial. Use the black permanent inkmarker to circle the locations of thosecovered carpet retaining snaps and boltsonce the insulating material has been laiddown. Also mark the rear edge of the patchfor the emergency brake hole.

13. Now cover the area between the front ofthe seats and the sheets of Hushmat alreadyapplied to the floorboard area. Use the waxpaper and the black permanent marker todraw an outline of the area onto the waxpaper, cut it out, check the fitment, recut ifnecessary and install the sheet without thebacking. Then use the black permanentmarker to mark out the edge of theemergency brake handle hole, the two carpetsnaps and the body drain plug hole.

14. There is a strip on the toeboard justforward of the strip applied in Step 12. Useanother piece of wax paper and the blackpermanent marker to draw an outline of thearea onto the wax paper. Then apply the waxpaper to the foil side of a sheet of Hushmatand use the box cutters to cut the shape ofthe patch into the Hushmat sheet. Leavingthe wax paper backing of the new patch inplace, apply it to the area to check for anylarge gaps between the Hushmat sheetalready in place and the new patch. Recut ifnecessary. Once satisfied with the shape, remove the wax paper backing and apply thepatch to the floorboard.

15. Now is the time to cut the excessHushmat material covering the body drainplugs just in front of the seats. You will needto cut a circle out of the Hushmat sheet sothat the body drain plug can fit into theoriginal hole against the metal rather than

against the Hushmat. You will want to trimjust a bit larger than the plug, try fitting theplug and then trim a bit more if necessary.

16. Now trim the Hushmat to the edge of theemergency brake handle hole. Then trim theHushmat covering all of the carpet snaps thatwere marked out earlier using the blackpermanent marker.

17. Remember, the transmission tunneldoes not need to be removed to install theHushmat. Gather the Transmission Tunnel& Shifter Template shaped piece of Hushmatthat you cut out in Step 2. Leaving the waxpaper backing in place, fit the templateagainst the transmission tunnel cover. Thetemplate should be placed to allow therubber plug to be installed withoutinterference from the Hushmat and withoutinterefering with the transmission shift boot.Once satisfied with the orientation of thetemplate, peel the backing off of the templateand apply it to the transmission tunnel.

18. Use the remaining Hushmat material tocover the rest of the transmission tunnelcover. The shape is irregular, so it will oftenrequire the use of smaller pieces rather thanattempting to cover large areas with fullsheets of Hushmat. Remember to leaveroom for the emergency brake handlegrommet, any rubber plugs and the manybolts that hold the transmission tunnel coverto the floor.

19. Reinstall all grommets and plugs. Thenreinstall the floorboard / footwell carpets.

20. If you removed the seats and seat rails, then reinstall the seats.

6. Remove the shift knob by loosening thelocknut under the handle, unscrewing thehandle and unscrewing the locknut. Removethe 4 large screws holding down the front ofthe center console rear section and lift thethe inner and outer shift boots and thechrome shifter surround. Remove theretaining screw inside of the flip uparmrest. Then remove the rear section of thecenter console.

7. Remove the fiber spacer that is on top ofthe carpet surrounding the shift lever.

8. Remove the two seat belt retaining boltsthat are bolted to the transmission tunnelnext to where the seats used to be.

9. Pull up the carpet covering the top andsides of the center console area up to wherethe rear of the center console was separatedfrom the front. The shift lever will keep thecarpet from being pulled farther forward. Then pull up the carpet on the sides of thecenter console in the footwell area. Theremay be a factory aluminum heat shield in thisarea. If so, leave it in place. There is aseparate piece of carpet behind theemergency brake. This should also be left inplace.

10. Pull up just the edge of the carpet thattouches the floor on both the left and rightside square frame rail at the far left and rightsides of the passenger compartment. Thesound deadening mat will go UNDER thecarpet here when installed.

Sheet Installation:11. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean all thedirt, dust and bits of carpet that are left on thefloor and toeboard. This will help the sounddeadening material to stick to the floor better. Then take note of the locations of thefloorboard carpet retaining snaps, toeboardcarpet retaining snaps and the mountingholes for the seats.

12. Obtain a full sheet of insulating material, leaving the wax paper backing in place. Setthe sheet in the left side footwell with the

forward edge at the line where the floorboardand the toeboard meet. The wide length ofthe sheet should run from the square bodyframerail on the left to the centertransmission tunnel and then up the side of it.

13. Once the position and fitment of theinsulating material is confirmed, remove afew inches of the wax paper backing from theinsulating material, apply the material to thefloor and then pull away the rest of the waxpaper while pushing down on the insulatingmaterial and directing it into the nooks, crannies and folds of the floor. Run theinsulating material under the carpet at thesquare frame rail, across the floor and upthe transmission tunnel (under the centerconsole carpet). If there is a factoryaluminum heat shield there, run theinsulating material over the heat shield butunder the carpet. Take note of any carpetretaining snaps on the floor that will becovered up by insulating material. Usethe black permanent ink marker to circlethe locations of those covered carpetretaining snaps once the insulatingmaterial has been laid down.

14. Using the same steps, test fit and theninstall one insulating material sheet justbehind the first sheet. Note that because ofthe changing shape of the transmissiontunnel, there will be a gap between thesheets as they rise up the transmissiontunnel. That gap will be filled in later. Repeatfor both sides of the vehicle. Take note of anycarpet retaining snaps on the floor that will becovered up by insulating material. Use theblack permanent ink marker to circle thelocations of those covered carpet retainingsnaps once the insulating material has beenlaid down.

15. Gather the two “almost square” sheetsthat resulted from cutting a insulatingmaterial sheet in half back on Step 3. Applyone “almost square” insulating material sheetonto the toeboard on each side of thevehicle. Again, take note of any carpetretaining snaps on the floor that will be

covered up by insulating material. Use theblack permanent ink marker to draw a circlearound the locations of those covered carpetretaining snaps once the insulating materialhas been laid down.

16. Gather Template 1 & Template 2. Theyare marked on top with arrows and lines thatshow the proper orientation that they shouldgo in around the stick-shift area on top of thetransmission tunnel. Peel the backing off ofthe template, lift up the carpet as far as it willgo and install the templates on top of thetransmission tunnel and any factory heatshielding that may already be there. Thenremove the tape and paper off of thetemplates so that all that is left is theinsulating material itself.

17. Gather the black magic marker, one ofthe wax paper backings from the alreadyinstalled insulating material and theinsulating material sheet that Template 1 andTemplate 2 were cut out of. Look for gapsbetween the full-size insulating materialsheets already laid on the car floor. Use theblack permanent marker on the non-waxyside of the wax paper backing to mark theshape of the gaps. Then cut that shape out ofthe insulating material sheet used to cut outTemplate 1 & Template 2. Then apply thatnewly cut shape to the gaps.

18. Use the box cutter (razor blade withhandle) to cut the insulating material that iscovering the carpet snaps. The locationswere marked out with black permanentmarker back on Step 15. Remember, you willneed to remove the material above the snap,as well as another 1/2 inch beyond the edgeof the snap so that the carpet side of thesnap can properly attach to the floor side ofthe snap. Depending on model, there may besnaps on the floor and on the toeboard.

19. Confirm that the edge of the insulatingmaterial is UNDER THE CARPET both onthe transmission tunnel side and at theside nearest the door. If it is not, pull upthe insulating material, pull up the carpet, lay the insulating material down and laythe carpet on top. This is important, because it will allow the carpet contactadhesive to hold the sides of thefloormats in place, keeping them frommoving around or slipping out from underyour feet when stepping into the vehicle.

20. Spray the carpet contact adhesive ontothe top of the transmission center console inbetween where the seats mount. Then laythe carpet down and press into place.21. Bolt the two centermost seatbelts backinto place.22. Reinstall the under seat, footwell andtoeboard carpets. Spray carpet contactadhesive along the edges of the carpetwhere the floorboard carpets will overlap thecenter console carpet and the strip of carpetthat runs next to the door and kickpanel.23. Reinstall the center console. Apply thefactory fiberboard gasket at the stickshift.Lay the center console on top. Reinstall thefour screws that hold the shifter boots andchrome trim in place. Then reinstall thescrew that goes under the center armrest.24. Reinstall the seats. Include any washersor plastic strips that were removed during theseat removal. Installing the seats requiresthat the seats be slid foward to reach the rearbolts and that the seats be slid rearward toreach the front bolts.23. Enjoy your quieter & cooler MGB!
