one Godparent: may be male or female.
Marriage: Arrangements must be made at
least nine months in advance. Please call the

The Novena of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy began on Good Friday; please feel free to come to the Chapel each day this week at 3:00pm if you would like to continue the Novena there. The Novena concludes on Saturday, April 7. Next week, April 8 is Divine Mercy Sunday. There will be a priest in the
Confessional from 2:00pm until 3:00pm. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will begin at 3:00pm; and will be followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, singing of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Litany of Divine Mercy and Benediction. All are invited to attend. (The 3:00pm Mass fulfills the Sunday obligation to attend Mass.)
Jesus, I trust in You!
Fr. Brian’s Blarney Happy Easter
May the Blessings of Almighty God
be with you this Easter. Lent seemed
to fly by and Easter is now upon us. I
hope you will be able to enjoy the
Easter Season and rejoice that the
Good Lord Jesus has risen from the
dead.
It is fitting that Easter falls on April
Fool’s Day, in so far as Jesus in a
sense “out foxed” the enemy. What
was thought of as a great failure by
the world, became the ultimate bait
and switch. Jesus trades places with
us in order to reclaim us from the
Devil for God the Father. We have
been purchased by the Blood of the
Lamb.
Parish “Fun” Raiser
There were about 45 in attendance
on Sunday, March 25th for the last
“Fun” Raiser. There were over 60
that had called in to attend, but things
must have come up to interfere with
the day. The weather has not helped
things. I am also wondering if the
term “Fun” Raiser is scaring people
off, because it sounds too close to
“Fund” Raiser. A friend from my
deaconate assignment and even my
mom asked me how the “fund” raiser
went. I had to correct them. Sorry if
this scared you off. The purpose is to
add social events and family friendly
events to the parish to help others to
socialize and meet new parishioners or
even long-term parishioners that have
not been able to attend other events.
Well… the 45ish that were in
attendance witness a wonderful
concert given by the McCutchen
Sisters (and their dad). I knew they
were going to be good, but they
shattered my expectations. They were
probably the best live local act that I
have seen (no offense to Randy Sehl
and Temperance Tonic). It probably
helps that the sisters can harmonize
and blend well due to good genetics
and long hours of practice. They did a
number of cover tunes, as well as,
their own originals that tend to be
based upon literature, especially
Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy
and Hobbit Lore. They were so good,
I would like to try to have them back
this Spring and tie it in with a bonfire
or something to open the event to
other parishes and youth/young adult
groups.
Robert Maenle prepared ham with
pineapple chunks and others brought
sides, snacks, and deserts. I like ham
on occasion, but this ham was
fantastic. There were enough
leftovers that a number of us men
grabbed ham to go so that we could
have ham and eggs for breakfast. I
am getting hungry thinking about it.
Next Parish “Fun” Raiser
The next “Fun” Raiser will be
Saturday, April 14th in Kenna Hall.
Joel Zmuda and Eric Hite will be
doing a big band type of show. I
snuck down to the Sylvania American
Legion Post to see Joel sing with
Swing Mania at the Open Dance
Party. They played a number of big
band and swing tunes. Joel was
crooning away to some Dean Martin
and Frank Sinatra. It was a great time
listening to Joel and the band and
watching the swing dancers practice
their moves.
Leonardo
Please save the date for Leonardo’s
performance of St. Maximilian
Kolbe on Sunday, April 15th at
7:30pm in the parish church. Please
pass the word and invite neighbors
and friends. The performance is
hosted by the generosity of St.
Anthony parish. There is not a cost
for admittance, but a free will offering
will be taken. For those discouraged
by movie ticket prices, this will be a
great relief to them.
St. Maximilian was a Conventual
Franciscan in Poland, who had a great
devotion to the Blessed Mother. He
also used the social media of the time
to print numerous magazines and
other publications promoting the
Blessed Mother and the Militia
Immaculata, which was Mary’s
Militia of prayer warriors, to spread
the devotion to the Immaculate Heart
of Mary.
Chant and Tradition
While watching Joel Zmuda and
Swing Mania, I bumped into Pastor
Mark Gibbs from St. Michael
Lutheran Church on Whiteford
Center. He was there dancing with
his wife to the swing music. He
seemed to be having a good time
dancing and socializing. I had asked
Joel, who he was because I
recognized him, as well as a few other
people. Joel offered to introduce me,
but I had met him shortly after I had
arrived. It has been a few years since
I have seen him though, so it was nice
to run into him at a fun event.
Now knowing that it was Pastor
Gibbs, Joel and I went up to him to
say hello. I think he was as surprised
to see me there as I was of him. I
introduced Joel as my parishioner and
that he sings in the St. Anthony Choir.
Pastor Gibbs complimented Joel on
his singing and then asked if Joel
would be willing to teach him to sing
a few big band songs. Pastor Gibbs
mentioned that he chanted their
Liturgy and even led his choir if the
choir director was not available. He
was hoping to be able to sing a song
or two with the band. Joel said that
he would be happy to do that.
I asked him what kind of chant that
he did and it sounded like it was from
the German Lutheran Liturgy. It
sounded like it was pretty simple
chant. Then, Pastor Gibbs commented
on how blessed we were to have not
only the type of chant, but the
selection and amount, in the Catholic
Liturgy. I mentioned that I finally
learned to offer the Old Rite in Latin
and even sing it, with help from
different computer apps and
downloads. He thought that was
awesome. I invited him to come
some time when we have Sung Mass
in Latin. He seemed interested.
It was interesting to hear that the
Lutherans still have some chant (I
didn’t ask if it was in German, Latin,
or English) that is being used. It was
also refreshing to hear someone from
a n o t h e r d e n o mi n a t io n , wh o
appreciates chant and beautiful music
May God Be Blessed!!
Our Prayer List is a beautiful way
to ask for prayers for family, friends,
loved ones and acquaintances. Anyone
may be included on our list. Call the
Parish Office to include a name; please
let us know also when a name can be
removed.
St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church Temperance, Michigan
PRAYER FOR THE RETURN OF NON-PRACTICING CATHOLICS
Good Shepherd, You never cease to seek out the lost, to call home the stray, to comfort the frightened, and to bind up the wounded.
I ask You to bring the people I hold in my heart back to the practice of the Faith, and to remove all obstacles that prevent them from receiving Your abundant mercy,
which flows sacramentally through the heart of Your holy Church.
Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, their Guardian Angels, their Patron Saints, and the ever-prayerful St. Monica, may You pardon their sins and
unshackle them from whatever hinders their freedom to come Home. For You, O Good Shepherd, have loved us to the end and offered Yourself to the
Father for the salvation of all. Amen.
Prayers for the return of a non-practicing Catholic also should be accompanied by sacrificial and private acts of fasting, and almsgiving in their name.
Parish Census - 2017/18 In the fall, the Parish began the work
of updating the Parish data base through
a Parish-wide Census. Membership
forms were included in the bulletins, as
well as made available on the table in the
Narthex. As of Friday, March 2, we’ve
received back 94 current membership
forms.
In the next few weeks, we’ll begin the
2nd phase of completing our Census:
we’ll be mailing forms to anyone who
has not yet responded. Please take a few
moments to fill out the form and return
to the Parish Office by the end of April.
Forms may be returned in the Sunday
collection, dropped off in the Parish
Office, or mailed in.
Our last census was conducted in 2012.
We conduct a Census every 5 year to not
only update our records but to give all
parishioners the opportunity to share
their special talents for the good of
everyone in our Parish. Maintaining
reliable, accurate records is an essential
part of knowing our parishioners and
provides us with the information we
need to develop and offer programs that
meet your spiritual needs.
Any questions, please call

Parish Presence Program Purpose: To be the eyes and ears of the priest before, during and after the Mass, relieving him of any concerns or anxieties for his parish family.
Responsibility: Be present in the Narthex ½ hr. prior to the beginning of Mass to welcome arriving parishioners and be available to answer questions of any newcomers. Once the Mass begins, be able to view any activity that occurs in the Narthex area for the duration of the Mass. You can sit in the front pew on Mary’s side and still have a view of the Narthex activities.
Start-Stop times: Arrive in the Narthex at least 30 minutes prior to the start of Mass and be available thru the completion of liturgical activities in church.
Program-Membership: Open to any parishioner aged 18 and over. Volunteer solicitation will occur thru announcements in the parish bulletin.
Scheduling: Will be on a weekly/monthly basis. (still undetermined). Volunteers will be asked to choose their preferred Mass times.
Resources: A St. Anthony information booklet will be available for reference and distribution. A lanyard identifying the member as a ‘PORTER’ will be available to wear when ‘on duty’. Please return lanyard to storage area after your ‘shift’.
Main Entrance presence: We would like to have the same coverage at the main entrance as at the Narthex entrance. The ushers on duty could serve as a backup or additional resource should any be needed. Preferred seating for the main entrance would be in one of the rear pews near the center. The same resources will also be available in this area.
Program management: The scheduling of members for each Mass will be overseen by the Fr. John A Kenna Knights of Columbus Council.
IMPORTANT NOTES: We are NOT a police force! We are NOT a security force! We assume no responsibility for the welfare or safety of people attending church activities. We want to be a warm and welcoming presence to all who join us in worshipping the Lord. We do what we can as ordinary civilians to be the eyes and ears of our parish and our priest.
Any additional suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Knightly News
April 2018
Dedicated to keeping you informed on the activities of the Fr. John A. Kenna Knights of Columbus Council 11430
During recent drive-arounds lately, I have noticed a lot of yard and house decorations depicting Easter bunnies and large
decorated eggs. Eggs represent new life, so I understood their significance, but the idea of a rabbit didn’t make much sense
so I ‘Googled’ the reason for the hare. It appears that the Germans brought the idea of an egg-laying hare to the US in the
1700s. Kids made nests where the eggs could be laid. I would rather see the true meaning of Easter be blazoned across our
yards but not sure how that could be done. Unlike Christmas time, where we could display a nativity scene, I am not so sure
I want to see an inflatable cross in our yards. In retrospect, I am glad we don’t see that as it could be used to mock the great
sacrifice our loving Lord made in providing each of us a path to salvation. Let us use those yard decorations as a reminder
what Easter means to us, the possibility of a new life with the Lord!! We can then have a truly joyous Easter season!
March was a busy time for our Council. Good weather helped bring folks out to the Breakfast Buffet as it was very well
attended. Harry Hahn had his name drawn in the attendance game at the March meeting. He was not eligible, so the
pot continues to grow. We had 4 members receive their full knighthood in the 3rd degree on March 17th. Pictured below
are Dave Thoma, Doug Vandergrift, Michael Holup and Eric Hite surrounded by fellow Knights who
were there to support their brothers. Congratulations also to Michael and Cheryl Scott and their crew for being
named Family of the Month for March. Pictured below is the Scott family along with Grand Knight
Michael Briskey. Don’t forget to check out the new kiosk in the Narthex. There are 15 new pamphlets there that are free. These were put
together by the K-C Catholic-Information-Services department of the Knights. There are some very good articles covered
so give them a look-over. Help yourself.
If you are a K-C member, why not come to the April meeting and try your luck by signing up for the game. You
COULD be the next winner.
Why not join with your brother Knights? We meet every 1st Wednesday at 7:30 PM in Kenna Hall. We invite all
men 18 yrs. or older who are practical Catholics to join a great bunch of guys. Just mention your interest to any of our
officers or give me a call.
