SOUNDWAVESThe Calrec Broadcast Audio News Update

Issue 17

At the 2009 NAB Show, Calrec Audio unveil Apollo, providing more than twicethe processing power than Calrec’s Alpha platform and a channel count that setsa new industry benchmark. Apollo not only expands Calrec’s award-winningBluefin HDSP and Hydra networking systems, but also introduces a revolutionarycontrol surface that takes the concept of user configurability to new levels.

Apollo utilises Bluefin2, the next generation of Bluefin HDSP, which provides unrivalled resources at multiple sample rates. At 48kHz Bluefin2 provides Apollo with 1020 channel processing paths, 128 program busses, 96 IFB/Track outputs and 48 auxiliaries. At 96kHz, Apollo provides 510 channel processingpaths, 64 program busses, 48 IFB/Track outputs and 24 auxiliaries.

In addition, Apollo has a second dynamics section in each channel, more than 70 minutes of assignable delay and three independentAPFL systems for multiple operator use. As with all Calrec designs, these facilities do not share resources and are available to the userat all times. All this processing, including power supplies and all I/Orouting, is contained in a space-efficient 8U rack.

The Apollo control surface manages all these channels over 12layers and on up to 320 physical faders. In addition, the Calrec A/Bpath selection system is retained for those users who wish to usethe desk in a similar manner as Calrec’s Alpha platform products.Layers and the A/B path system can be disabled if not required.

The Apollo control surface features OLED displays and touchscreens to provide hi-resolution feedback of function and status, with light emitting knobs which change colour depending onfunction for immediate recognition. The surface can be instantlyconfigured into different operational settings to suit the operator. In assign mode the console mirrors the assign panels used onprevious Calrec designs. In channel strip mode the panels areconfigured to resemble an analog design.

Calrec has also developed Calrec’s Hydra network, using a a large-scale I/O router based on Hydra networking technology – Hydra2.

Hydra2 is an audio network that uses high capacity 8192 x 8192cross-point routers. Each console has a dedicated integral routerwhich enables all I/O to be remote from the console. A variety ofI/O units are available to provide Analog, AES, MADI, SDI and Dolby®E formats. All use copper or fibre connectivity, and can befitted with GPIO cards. Console routers can be connected togetherto form large networks. Stand-alone routers will also be available.

Like all Calrec consoles, Apollo is also highly resilient. Calrec’scustomers operate in mission-critical environments and soresilience is designed in from the ground up. This includes full automatic hot-swap redundancy systems in DSP, controlprocessor, router, power supplies and connections.

Calrec Goes Global in Australia

Global Television, one of Australia’s largestbroadcast facilities companies, hascompleted work on the latest additions toits fleet of HD and SD outside broadcastvehicles with the purchase of three 56-fader Calrec Sigma with Bluefin digital broadcast consoles. The consolescomplement the existing vehicles inGlobal’s fleet, the majority of whichare already fitted with Calrec desks.

Global provides around 70% of Australianbroadcasters’ OB and external studiorequirements, and their trucks are regularfixtures at major Australian entertainmentevents and sports tournaments.Consequently, they have a large fleet ofvehicles in weekly use: five SD vehiclesand five HD vehicles, two of which are therecent double-expanding additions intowhich the Sigmas have been installed.

The third Sigma desk replaces a 48-faderclassic Sigma, which was moved toanother of Global’s SD OB trucks. Thenew consoles in the HD vehicles areadditionally equipped with the Hydra audio networking system, remote I/Ostage boxes and MADI multi-channelaudio interfacing.

Global has been a user of Calrec consolesfor many years, and all but one of itscurrent ten-strong OB fleet has a Calrecat its heart. Milan Milenkovic, Global’sTechnical Services Manager, explains why they’ve been such faithful customers.

“We chose Calrec primarily for its reliabilityand ease of use. As we have manydifferent operators using our consoles, we needed a high-quality reliable productthat was consistent throughout our fleet,as well being intuitive.

“Our relationship with Calrec goes back tothe days of the VCS digitally controlledanalog console, one of which saw activeservice in a Global truck for 17 years andwhich still works! That console proved tome that Calrec made quality products. The all-analog desks have also given usmany years of reliable service — we stillhave S2 and Q2 consoles in three of ourSD vehicles. More recently, the digitalconsoles have also proven to be intuitive, reliable and robust, not to mention offeringsuperb sound quality.

“We particularly like the small-formatremote I/O boxes, and the off-lineconfiguration software — it’s handy for ouroperators to be able to build and modifyconsole setups away from the truck, andit’s also useful for training operators withless experience.”

Two of the new Sigma with Bluefinconsoles have already seen use on avariety of projects including HD coverageof cricket, motor racing, rugby, soccer andthe Australian Idol talent contest. TheGlobal truck containing the third Sigmadesk went into service in early March.

Calrec has announced that its FY 2008-2009 Americas sales remained strong inspite of the weak economy, enabling it tosolidify its position as the leading consolemanufacturer for high-end televisionbroadcast applications. Calrec, one of theprofessional brands under D&M Holdings, ascribed its success to the continuedloyalty of its customers, the addition of afull-time team in the U.S. in the past year, and the strong support of itsrepresentatives and distributors.

“Whether they operate from a studio or atruck, broadcasters must have rock-soliddependability. A live broadcast audioconsole is truly a mission-critical piece ofequipment,” said Courtney Spencer, SeniorVice President, Business and ProfessionalGroup, Americas, for D&M Holdings.

“That’s why ultimately, Calrec’s salessuccess is always based on the qualityand the reputation of the consoles. Thereare many leading mixers who know andlove the consoles and don’t want to useanything else.”
