Ourfacultyhaveworkedhardtohelpequipourstudentswiththetoolsneededtomakethatdifference.AtCapeHenry,itisourgoaltonotonlyensuretheirfutureacademicandfinancialsuccess,buttohelpthembecomethetypeofleaderswhoareguidedbyameaningfulsetofvalues.

AtCapeHenry,webelievethatleadershipisnotonlydefinedbycollegechoicesorfuturejobtitles.Instead,webelievethatidentitymustbecharacterizedbyhowwelivelifeandbytheexamplesweset.CapeHenryleaderspossesstheabilitytochangeheartsandbuildcommunitywhiledisplayingvirtuesofcourageandempathy.

Wetrytodevelopleaderswhowillmakeadifferenceintheworld.Thatiswhystudentstravelglobally,competehonestlyinsports,takeclassesinhistory,math,andethics,andlearninacommunityinfluencedbymeaningfulvalues.Theyknowtheimportanceofpossessingintegrityandcompassion.Inthefuture,theirCapeHenryexperienceswillhelpthemfurthercalibratetheirmoralcompass,whichwillguidetheminthedecisionstheymake.

Dr. Lance B. DavlinDespiteanactivemedicalpractice,Dr.DavlinneverhesitatedtobecomeinvolvedwiththeSchool.He,alongwithhiswife,Joanne,workedintandem,notonlyforrecordsettingAnnualGivinggifts,butalsofortheenhancementofpoliciesandeducationalexperiencesforourstudents.

Napolitano, II Fredprovidedwonderfulyearsofleadershipespeciallyintheareasofeducationandpolicydevelopment.AsChairoftheEducationCommitteeduringtheimportantaccreditationprocess,hedemonstratedtrueleadership,andhisopen-mindednessallowedtheSchooltoexaminepoliciesandtostrengthenCapeHenryinmanyways.

Hirschbiel, Jr.PaulhelpedbringaboutBoardmaturityasheexhibitedexperiencedgovernanceinleadingtheBoard.HeledtheBoardthroughimportantpolicydevelopment,whilesettingthestandardsfordevelopment.HealsoestablishedtheBoardmentoringandorientationprogramstohelpBoardmembersconnectwiththehistoryoftheSchool,allwhileworkingcloselywiththeBoardleadership.

KellyMarkprovidedleadershipatatimeofchange.Hedemonstrateduncannyskillstodealwithcomplexissues.AsBoardChair,hehadtheabilitytomaintainawonderfulsenseofhumorandsupportforthestudents,faculty,staff,andBoardmembers.Toourbenefit,hewasthereastheSchoolcontinuedtoreachforwardfromaschoolthatwasmuchsmallertooneofthelargestindependentschoolsinVirginia.

SimsInevitably,becauseofhertirelesssupport,WendywillneverleavethehallsofCapeHenry.Weconsiderherthe“AuctionAlumniPresident.”HersmilingfaceexcitestheLowerSchoolassembliesasshedressesinhercolorfulcostumesandvisitsthestudentsastheBirthdayFairyeachmonth.Wearealltrulygratefulforherunwaveringsupportofandenthusiasmforourstudents,andhergenerosityhasbeenatrueexampleforall.

LettersofsupportforourmissionfromGovernorKaineandSenatorAllenwisheduswellasweembarkedtothesmallBuddhistKingdomasoneofthefirstAmericanhighschoolstovisit.PeoplehadaskedmewhyIwantedtogotoBhutan.IwantedtorespondwithMallory’sinfamousquote,“Becauseit’sthere.”Butinfact,theanswerwasmorelike,“Becausenobodyelsegoesthere.”Bhutanopeneditsdoorstotourismin1974andlastyearallowedanestimated10,000touristsintoDrukYul,ortheLandoftheThunderDragon.InaworldofiPods,computersandcabletelevision,Iwantedtomoveourstudentssofaroutoftheircomfortzone,thattheirwholeperceptionoftheworldwouldbealtered.IthinkBhutan’smagicdidjustthat.TheallureofthisHimalayan“Shangri-La”coveredpolitics,cultureandreligion.Politically,ourprogramwashighlightedbya90minutediscussionatthecapitalontheconceptofGrossNationalHappinesswithHisExcellencyLyonpoJigmeThinley,MinisterforHome&CulturalAffairsandformerPrimeMinister.WefollowedthatwithadiscussionoftheconstitutionwithHisExcellencyLyonpoSonamTobgay,ChiefJusticeoftheBhutanSupremeCourtandprimaryarchitectofthenewlydrafted,firstconstitution.AtouroftheSupremeCourtwithtwojustices,adinnerwiththeDirectorofEducationandDirectorofManagementtoppedan

extremelyrareopportunityforourstudentstohaveaccesstothehighestpoliticalofficers.ButonecannotdiscusspoliticsinBhutanwithoutmentioningreligion.Thetwoarenotseparate,butareequal,andintegratedthroughouttheirsociety.

BhutanisalandofmythsandlegendswhereBuddhistmantraschantedbyredrobedmonksriseabovethethickgreenforests.TantricBuddhismissoingrainedintheculturethatitpermeateseveryaspectofexistencefromKingWangchuck’sconsultationwithanastrologerbeforeamilitarycontesttothepoorestfarmertoilingbehindtwoprayerbeadedoxeninaricepaddy.OrchardsofwhiteBuddhistprayerflagsdotthemountainsideswithcoolwindscarryingprayersforthedeadtotheheavens.Prayerwheelsofmanysizesinundateeachcommunitysendingprayersofcompassionskywardtohelpridtheworldofhatredandanger.Insomecases,largeprayerwheelsarepoweredbyglacierfedstreams,sotheycanspineternallyhelpingease

thesinsoftheworld.BhutanisalandofspiritsanddemonswhoareoftenkeptatbaybythepowersofBuddhistmantrasandritualspasseddownbythelikesofDrukpaKinley,ortheDevineMadmanoftheFlamingThunderbolt.PeoplestilladorntheirhomeswithFlamingThunderboltstowardoffevilspirits.ItisalandwherethelegendaryBuddhistlamaGuruRimpocheflewonthebackofatigertothecliffsoverParotoestablishtheholyTashkang,orTigersNestmonasteryinthe8thCentury.Coloriseverywhere;fromtheredrhododendronscoveringthe12,000-footfoothillsofthesnow-cappedHimalayastointricatelypaintedmuralsintemples.Bytheendofthetrip,ourstudentsfeltcomfortablemeditatingonthefloorofatempleorspinningaprayerwheel.

Culturally,Bhutanisalandthatisblissfullystuckintime.Itremainsinmanyplacesthesameasitwas1,000yearsagoprovidingourstudentswithaglimpseintothepast.Buckwheatflourisstillmilledtheancientway,betweenstonesspunbystreampower.ItisaplacewheretwelfthcenturycastlescalledDzongsarestillusedasgovernmentoffices.Peoplestillwearthetraditional,colorfulghosandkeras.Thirtyfivepercentdonothaveelectricity,fortypercentareilliterate,andninetypercentaresubsistencefarmers.Butdespite

theirapparentdeprivation,wewerewelcomedintohomes,monasteriesandnunnerieswithkind,contentsmiles.Duringourelevendayvisit,wesawatmost,adozenwesterners,sparingBhutanofmuchoutsideinfluenceandleavingarefreshinglyuntouched

nation.Itisasifthe25,000-footpeaksthatsurroundthiscountryhaveprotecteditfromallthatailstheplanet.Thebeautyofthepeople,theculture,andthelandremainsintactandintoxicating.

Priortothetrip,ourstudentsponderedwhethertheconceptofGrossNationalHappinesswaspropaganda.Afterthetrip,nonedoubtedthathappinessshouldbethemostimportantgoalforasociety,andithasnothingtodowithmaterialisticaccumulation;asimpleconceptthathopefullyhasinextricablyalteredtheirperceptionoftheworld.As

studentDannyLamptonstatedtowardstheendofthetrip,“Thistriphaschangedmylife.”Thatmakestwoofus.

Senior Alec Crowell and Mrs. Arlene Ingram,DirectorofCollegeCounseling,attended the American Institute ofAeronautics and Astronautics AwardsBanquet in May at NASA LangleyResearch Center. Alec was one of tworecipients of their annual scholarship,“Futures in Aerospace.” Alec was alsoa semifinalist in the 2006 PresidentialScholarscompetition.Hewasoriginally

one of 2,700 students, and then the list was narrowed to 550semifinalists.

Thisyear’sGolfTournamentattheCavalierbroughtbeautifulweatherandahandfulofAlumnitoplayabeautifulcourseinsupportofaworthycause,CapeHenryCollegiateSchool.OurfirsteverLacrosse/SpringThingwasagreat,neweventforeveryonewhocame.Eventhosewhowerenotfamiliarwiththegameoflacrosseenjoyedthefoodandfineweather.ThingswereevenbetterasbothgirlsandboysteamshaddominatingwinsovertheCoxandFirstColonialteams.

Afewreuniongatheringsoccurredfortheclassesof1990and1995.AllwhoreturnedtotheSchoolbecauseofthereunionswereastonishedandamazedbyhowtheSchoolhastransformedinsucharelativelyshortspanoftime.IfyouhavenotbeenbacktovisittheSchoolinafewyears,Iinviteyoutostopbyorcallandsetatimetotakeatourofthefacilities.Youwillbeevenproudertomentionyouralmamatertoothersafteryourvisit.

I feel honored to say that I graduated from such an amazing school. I will forever hold Cape Henry in my heart as a place that helped guide me to the person I have become. I did not realize that my K-12 experiences were going to be such an integral part of how I teach my students until I stepped back into time on that Saturday, May 20, 2006. Cape Henry taught me to run, to soar, and it opened the door to something I never knew before and that is what I want my pupils to remember when they come back to their ten-year reunion.
