WelcomeSummer is such

a special season in Colorado, and we are thrilled that we get to spread music to venues all over the state. The Colorado Symphony has made this year’s line up of summer concerts one of the most interesting yet by offering diverse concerts from classical music in Boettcher Concert Hall, to rock music at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, to music inspired by the Fourth of July at Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre.

We’re pushing the envelope further this summer, including several new collaborations such as our concert earlier this summer with The Flaming Lips, and a first time appearance at Castle Rock’s brand new outdoor amphitheatre in Philip S. Miller Park. We are also excited to return with some of our favorite summer events such as DeVotchka with the Colorado Symphony and concerts at the Arvada Center.

We invite you to challenge yourself this summer to experience the orchestra in a new way and at new venues. If you haven’t seen us perform at Red Rocks, we’ll be performing with some of the most exhilarating artists, including Chris Botti and Josh Bell, Warren Haynes, and Styx. At Fiddlers Green, we’ll be back to celebrate Independence Day with great music and fireworks.

Back at Boettcher Concert Hall, we are letting our geek flags fly with The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses - Master Quest. This highly-anticipated, global concert tour includes never before released music and special imagery.

We are also excited to give audiences a free preview of what we have in store for the 16/17 season with our Season Preview concert. We have put together one of the most unique and inspiring seasons yet for this fall, and we look forward to sharing some samples of that with you.

AMY ANDERSSON, conductor – Legend of Zelda

At home in both the operatic and symphonic repertoires, Amy Andersson has conducted throughout Europe and the United States. She has led opera productions at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, National Theater of Mannheim, Stadttheater Aachen, Weikersheim Opera Festival, Rheinsberg Chamber of Opera and Colorado Light Opera. She has made concert appearances with the Niederrheinische Symphoniker, LOH Orchesta Sonderhausen, Berliner Symphoniker, Giessen Philharmonic, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Macedonian Philarmoic, Jeunesses Musicales

Deutschland, Les Musicales du Trophee, and at the Colorado Music Festival. Andersson’s many engagements included a five-week concert tour with the Jeunesses Musicales to Germany, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and a debut at the Gewandhaus at the Leipzig Bach Fest. She is also currently the Associate Conductor for the show “rePLAY: Symphony of Heroes.”

TAYLOR MARTIN, artistic director, Denver Pro Chorale – Legend of Zeldaassistant conductor, Colorado Symphony Chorus

Taylor Martin serves as the Artistic Director of the Denver Pro Chorale, and the Assistant Conductor of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. As Assistant Conductor of the Colorado Symphony Chorus, Martin has prepared the chorus for Video Games Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, and for Danny Elfman’s Music From the Films of Tim Burton, at Boettcher Concert Hall. Martin has taught with the non-profit organization, El Sistema Colorado since its infancy, developing key elements of the choral curriculum. The program brings free music education to under-served students in the

Globeville and Swansea neighborhoods in Denver and has become an important part of the cultural fabric of Colorado. As an active professional singer, he performs regularly with the Colorado Bach Ensemble and Saint Martin’s Chamber Choir which joined the Santa Fe Desert Chorale for a performance of Mozart’s Requiem. Martin is a featured tenor soloist on the Saint Martin’s Chamber Choir recording of Henri Hardouin’s masses, to be released by Toccata Classics in 2016. He was recently engaged as the Director of Music at Christ the King Catholic Church in Denver; and he is a frequent clinician and guest conductor throughout the Greater Denver area.

SUMMER BIOGRAPHIES


DENVER PRO CHORALEFounded in 2012, the Denver Pro Chorale is comprised of musicians based in the Denver Metropolitan area. The Denver Pro Chorale specializes in singing diverse choral repertoire including works of living composers from around the world. The ensemble will be featured with musicians of the Breckenridge Music Festival in August 2016, and has performed with the Colorado Symphony, Saint Martin’s Chamber Choir, and the choirs of Metropolitan State University. In 2014 the chorale was a featured ensemble at the Colorado Music Educator’s Association convention in Colorado Springs. Now in it’s fourth season, The Denver Pro Chorale is an artist group in residence at Denver’s Church of the Ascension, and has developed an educational partnership with the Denver-based nonprofit, El Sistema Colorado.

BRETT MITCHELL, conductor – Season Preview 2016/17

Hailed for leading consistently compelling performances of eclectic, innovative programs, Brett Mitchell currently serves as Associate Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra. In this role, he leads the orchestra in several dozen concerts on all series each season at Severance Hall, Blossom Music Center, and on tour. Mr. Mitchell is also currently the Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, which he led on a four-city tour of China in 2015, marking the ensemble’s second international tour and its first to Asia. In addition to these titled

positions, Mr. Mitchell is in consistent demand as a guest conductor. Recent guest appearances include performances with the orchestras of Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Oregon, Rochester, Saint Paul, and Washington (National Symphony Orchestra), among others. He has performed with such artists as Rudolf Buchbinder, James Ehnes, Leila Josefowicz, and Alisa Weilerstein, and has served as cover conductor and musical assistant for The Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Previous positions include music directorships of the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra in Michigan and the Moores Opera Center in Houston, as well as assistant conductor posts with the Houston Symphony and Orchestre National de France. A staunch advocate of the music of our time, Mr. Mitchell has led some two dozen U.S. and world premieres over the past two decades. A native of Seattle, Mr. Mitchell holds degrees in conducting and composition from the University of Texas at Austin and Western Washington University, and counts among his principal mentors Kurt Masur and Lorin Maazel.

CHRISTOPHER DRAGON, conductor – Summer Serenades

Australian conductor Christopher Dragon began his appointment as Associate Conductor of the Colorado Symphony in the 2015/16 season. In 2013 he was appointed the inaugural Assistant Conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, a title he holds until the end of 2015. This role provided him with the opportunity to work closely with Principal Conductor Asher Fisch in addition to numerous other engagements. In April of 2015 Dragon made his debut at the Sydney Opera House conducting the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with Australian singer/

songwriter Josh Pyke. In 2016 he will be making his debut with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Dragon is a member of the prestigious Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program through which he has worked with orchestras in Australia and New Zealand under the guidance of Christopher Seaman and the orchestras’ Principal Conductors. In 2014 Christopher was invited to conduct the Princess Galyani Vadhana Youth Orchestra in Thailand and earlier that year participated in the Jarvi Winter Academy in Estonia where he was awarded the Orchestra’s Favourite Conductor Prize. Dragon has also studied with numerous distinguished conductors including Paavo and Neeme Jarvi at the Jarvi Summer Festival, Fabio Luisi at the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, and conducting pedagogue Jorma Panula.

JAYCE OGREN, conductor – Mozart Under MoonlightJayce Ogren began the 2015/2016 season leading Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Music Academy of the West, followed by weeks in Paris conducting the Ensemble Intercontemporain. He leads subscription weeks with the Indianapolis, Colorado, Edmonton and Victoria Symphony orchestras, and Philadelphia’s Orchestra 2001; also performances of Bernstein’s West Side Story with film for the Pittsburgh and the Dallas Symphonies and Home Alone with film for the Utah Symphony. During the summer of 2016 he leads the world premiere of Jack Perla’s Shalimar the Clown for the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, returns to the Brevard Festival Orchestra, leads Rufus

Wainright’s opera Prima Donna at the Montreal Jazz Festival; and from successes earlier in the season he will make immediate returns to the Colorado Symphony and to the Utah Symphony at the Deer Valley Music Festival. A native of Washington State, Ogren received a Masters degree in Conducting from the New England Conservatory and, with a Fulbright Grant, completed a postgraduate diploma at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm where he studied with the legendary Jorma Panula. He was Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst, then Music Director of New York City Opera where he led Britten’s Turn of the Screw, Rossini’s Mosé in Egitto, and the much-acclaimed production of Leonard Bernstein’s A Quiet Place. Ogren is an award-winning runner and triathlete, most recently completing the 2016 Boston Marathon. He makes his home in Brooklyn, NY.

MICHAEL THORNTON, horn and alphorn – Mozart Under Moonlight

Before joining the Colorado Symphony, Michael Thornton left his studies at The Juilliard School to become the Principal Horn of the Honolulu Symphony. Thornton has also performed as a guest Principal Horn with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony, and as guest Associate Principal Horn with the Philadelphia Orchestra. An avid chamber musician, and soloist of international recognition, Thornton has been a featured performer at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Mainly Mozart, Spoleto, Moab Music Festival, Campos do Jordao International

Winter Festival, Medellin Festicamara, among many others. He performs annually as the solo horn of the Washington Island music festival in Door County, Wisconsin, and will serve this season as hornist with the Camerata Pacifica Chamber Ensemble in Southern California. As a soloist, Thornton has appeared with the National Arts Center Orchestra, Melbourne Musician’s Chamber Orchestra, and numerous orchestras in the United States, including regular solo performances with the Colorado Symphony. He has also performed as a featured artist at several horn symposia, including the 2008 International Horn Symposium, the Western US Horn Symposium, and Hornswoggle. Appointed to the faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1999, Thornton is currently Associate Professor of Horn. He also serves as a Faculty Artist at the Colorado College Music Festival each June. Thornton holds certification in Mental Toughness Training from the Human Performance Institute in Orlando, Florida, and implements this training in his teaching. His students hold positions in orchestras throughout the United States and abroad, and have won numerous awards and competitions. Thornton has twice received the Marinus Smith Award, which is bestowed upon teachers at CU Boulder who have made significant contributions to their students’ development.
