rockford Park District remembers Pat HayesPat Hayes Parks passed away November 24, 2008 . Pat was employed by the Park District for more than 21 years . She is best remembered for coordinating the Music in the Park summer concert series and the Imagination Station performance series . She also organized the annual community holiday concerts by the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America .

To honor and memorialize Pat’s passion for, and immeasurable contributions to the programs at the Sinnissippi Music Shell, her family chose to establish a permanent fund to provide ongoing financial support for programs at the Music Shell . When considering the options of how to spend memorial gifts given following Pat’s passing, her family felt that Pat would have wanted these funds to be used for the greatest long-term impact on the Music Shell and its programs .

If you appreciate the wonderful and unique entertainment experience provided at the Sinnissippi Music Shell and the many years Pat devoted to it, please consider making a contribution to the Pat Hayes Parks Memorial fund . You may simply mail a contribution to the Rockford Park District Foundation at 401 S . Main St . – Rockford, IL, 61101 .

Thank you on behalf of Pat’s family and the staff of the Rockford Park District.

Rockford’s Sinnissippi Park, at 1401 N . Second Street, was one of the Rockford Park District’s first parks, acquired shortly after the District was formed in 1909 . An 80-acre tract was purchased for $47,500, to prevent the land from being subdivided by real

estate speculators .

Formerly known as Rood’s Woods, the park was renamed Sinnissippi, the Native American word meaning "clear flowing river ." When it opened in 1912, the park also contained Rockford’s first golf course . It now includes 123 .04 acres, and is one of the community’s most popular parks, with its playground, cookout shelters, nine-hole golf course, music shell, lagoon, gardens, and recreation path . Special events such as Music in the Park, Holiday Festival of Lights, and the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition bring many thousands to visit the park each year .

Music shellDedicated in 1950, the Music Shell in Sinnissippi Park is an acoustic amphitheater that can accommodate as many as 700 on benches, and up to 3,000 on the terraces and lawn . A favorite spot of many local congregations and arts organizations, the Music Shell hosts a wide variety of events throughout the season . For information on renting the Music Shell, please call 815-987-1605 .

a Little History…The construction of the Music Shell was first promoted by the Rockford Civic Symphony Orchestra, which sponsored a two-day music festival in August 1948 to launch the project. The Lions Club coordinated many donations made to the project by local organizations, and underwrote additional construction costs of $4,000 - $6,000 .

The Music Shell was designed by A. Reyner Eastman, who contributed the plans and his time to supervise the construction . Eastman is also responsible for a number of other area landmarks, including the Mendelssohn Club, the YMCA Log Lodge, Henrietta and Westview schools, Spring Creek Congregational Church, and Rockford Clinic . He also was the designer of a bridge spanning the Rock River at Black Hawk Park, the first modern-type bridge in the state of Illinois .

The Music Shell was officially presented to the City of Rockford and the Rockford Park District on June 4, 1950 by Dawn A . Smith, president of the Rockford Noon Lions Club, "for the enjoyment and satisfaction of music lovers in Rockford and vicinity ."

saturday, June 29mike mangiOne & the uniOn Mike Mangione & The Union is a touring group that combines a folk-rock sound with an orchestrated string section, soulful vocals, and literate sensibility. The band’s debut album, "Tenebrae," received favorable press from all

corners of the country, including the honor of being an All Music Guide Album Pick, while Blurt Magazine refers to their "tearstained folk, Memphis-styled gospel and bluesy-flavored pop" as "luminous." In 2011, the group released "Offering." The album and band were nominated for "best of the year" by RadioMilwaukee (88.9 FM), along with receiving other accolades. In the beginning of 2013, they will release yet another album, "Red-Winged Blackbird Man," produced by Grammy-nominated producer Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown, Pieta Brown).

saturday, July 13randy SaBien & Fiddlehead Band When Randy Sabien picks up his violin, get ready . His rhythmic, bluesy, swingin’ sound will have you bobbing your head, tapping your toes, and dancing right out of your

chair . Randy’s musical aspirations began by studying classical violin, but his direction did an about-face the day he discovered he could play jazz on the violin . He poured himself into the music of the swing era, and began teaching himself to play along with records of his favorite jazz artists. He also continued to appreciate the music of his own generation, the ‘60s and ‘70s. This led to inspired renditions of tunes by the Beatles, The Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and others . Meanwhile, his own compositions developed as straight ahead jazz for violin . "Jazz violinists usually draw from one of two traditions. The best of both can be found in the superb Randy Sabien . . . he combines classical technique and folk energy in a program that’s still strictly jazz." -USA TODAY

Wednesday, July 31derek luttrellDerek Luttrell is more than your average guitar toting songwriter; he’s a master of brevity and storytelling . Derek writes with the narrative power of Johnny Cash and the well-crafted melodies of Randy Newman, all carried by an old voice, and accompanied by his percussive guitar playing . His songs are coated in empathy and rich with history, with characters ranging from a victim of Hurricane Katrina to a Southern runaway, from a man on death row to a Union soldier . He does have his share of love songs filled with the angst of youth, but unlike the flowery and flighty ballads of his contemporaries, there’s a believability born from the almighty cliché of the shy, small town boy trying to make a life in the big city .

Wednesday, august 7vince chiarelli & FriendSVince Chiarelli comes from a bloodline of musical tradition . Starting when he was 18 months old, Vince showed everyone his singing ability . In addition to playing authentic Italian and Sicilian music, Vince plays classic standards, lounge music, and other popular hits from artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, and many more .

Two entertainment series run each summer at Levings Park to promote the cultural enrichment of our diverse community . Both series emphasize a specific genre to meet the diverse interests of our community . For the 2013 season, Live at Levings features gospel

music performances, with each concert preceded by a talent competition featuring a variety of performers such as singers, dancers, rappers, comedians, magicians, and more great acts . Domingo en El Parque offers music for fans of banda, cumbias, quebradita and duranguense .

History of Levings Park and showcaseLevings Park, located at 1420 S. Pierpont Ave., is named after Thomas Goodsman Levings, who was Rockford Township’s highway commissioner from 1886 until his death in 1924. The park was once part of the Levings family farm . Levings donated the land in 1920 . It remained undeveloped until 1928, when the Park Commissioners voted to renovate the park, dam Kent Creek, and create an artificial lake . Levings Park officially opened to the public in the winter of 1935 .

In 1986, retired military veteran Elbert Jordan was walking through Levings Park with then Rockford Park District Executive Director Webbs Norman discussing ways to improve the park . Elbert’s vision was that Levings Park would be a way to bring people together and to provide positive activities for young people during the summer .

Having recently retired from Chrysler, Elbert had the time and drive to create something new and his idea was to offer a talent showcase and series of concerts at the park. The Rockford Park District agreed to provide funding support, and the Levings Talent Showcase was born .

Elbert coordinated this venue for 17 years, during which time, countless young people were encouraged to exercise their talents and artistic interests by competing in the talent showcase and benefiting from the mentoring provided by Elbert and his associates .

Harlan Jefferson became director of the Levings Talent Showcase (now called Live at Levings) in 2003, when the founder of the Showcase and director for 17 years, Elbert Jordan, retired . Harlan has served as director since then, lining up a variety of talent to perform at Levings on several Sundays during the summer and continuing to provide an opportunity for local aspiring artists to take their performance on stage and develop their skills .

Says Harlan, "I love this program because I am a product of it . As a young teen I participated in it every summer . My friends and I couldn’t wait for summer to come so we could hear free live music and compete in the talent show in front of a built-in audience that was starving for entertainment . It wasn’t about winning or losing, it was about the experience ."

Harlan feels this program is important because it brings generations of families together . It also provides cultural, educational, recreational, and leadership development experience through the arts . He comes from a musical family, and his parents felt that the arts were just as important as athletics. They enrolled him in music camps, took him see concerts, and hired private music teachers to help him appreciate and understand the art of music .

Today, in addition to coordinating Live at Levings, Harlan is an award winning musician who has gained recognition for his playing style and engaging stage presence . Harlan’s passionate approach to playing the saxophone shows every time he blows his horn . Harlan has the ability to bring music alive and effectively communicate with and affect his audiences through a voice and style that is uniquely his own .

Smooth jazz radio and internet stations around the world play songs by Harlan Jefferson, such as "I Cry for You" from his up and coming album . Harlan was featured in the Chicago Defender newspapers, and Chicagojazz .net has labeled Harlan as one of Chicago’s hottest saxophone players . When Harlan’s not on the road performing, you can hear him perform at many local places, including his own lounge and restaurant located inside the Clock Tower Resort called Tempo Italian Bistro & Lounge.

The Rockford Park District is pleased to support the efforts of Harlan Jefferson to continue providing this unique and dynamic program .
