The Sounds of the Old City Festival is being held for a third time in Jerusalem's Old City. It is an initiative of the Jerusalem Development Authority, the Ministry for Jerusalem and Diaspora Affairs and the Jerusalem Municipality, and is produced by Ariel Municipal Company.
The Festival offers a glimpse of the Old City's diverse musical traditions and is yet another anchor of Jerusalem's cultural and tourism nightlife. Festival-goers will be able to sample a rare selection of authentic musical bands and ensembles. The ensembles will appear on centrally-located stages and in quaint alleyways, performing music from the array of cultures unique to each of the Old City's four quarters and ensuring that visitors come away with an exhilarating experience in the magical atmosphere of the Old City.
Jaffa Gate Plaza will be the scene of a folk music extravaganza in a myriad of styles: the Armenian Quarter will hold an authentic Armenian gala. The Jewish Quarter will be enlivened by the broad range of Israeli music; ethnic music will resound in the Muslim Quarter and a fascinating encounter with stirring musical works will take place in the Christian Quarter.

Did you know?
Jaffa Gate derives its name from the fact that the road leading from it was the old main road from Jerusalem to the port city of Jaffa. The Arabic name for the gate is Bab el-Khalil, reflecting the fact that it was the point of departure for Hebron – al-Khalil in Arabic (a word that means "friend" and is another name for Abraham).The area between the gate and the citadel (the Tower of David) was opened up in 1898 in honor of Kaiser Wilhelm II's visit to Jerusalem. People thronged to welcome the Kaiser; even Theodor Herzl awaited him in the gate plaza.
Samra Ensemble > Premier Performance
The Samra Ensemble was founded as an initiative of the Association for Society and Culture that works to preserve and cultivate the Yemenite Jewish heritage. The ensemble is composed of experienced and professional musicians who play both authentic Mizrahi and modern instruments.The ensemble musicians create new arrangements for classical Yemenite works, representing both the Jewish diwan and traditional Yemenite poetry. The ensemble also offers new interpretations of the songs of Yemenite artists who were active in Israel during the 1950s and 1960s.

Na'am Ensemble
A Jerusalem ensemble based in Ein Kerem. The music of Na'am ("Yes" in Arabic) expresses the ideal of taking the positive view – saying "Yes" to the experiences that come our way. The ensaemble creates local "world music" incorporating the styles that exert an influence on its musicians – jazz, klezmer, classical Western and Arabic music, rhythms of the Maghreb, of Iraq, of the Galilee, and of Latin America.

Did you know?
The name "Tower of David" is rooted in an erroneous Christian interpretation of the writings of Flavius Josephus (Joseph ben Matityahu), as well as in the Muslim name for the structure – mihrab Nabi Daud (the "prayer niche of David"). There is actually no connection between the citadel and King David.During the 19th century, visitors from Western countries applied the misnomer to the Turkish minaret of the mosque at the site; the minaret bears the name to this day.

In Latin, cardo means "main street."
The Jerusalem Cardo served, in Roman times, as a main street that ran through the city from Damascus Gate to the Dung Gate. Beit HaBad Street (Khan a-Zayit or "Oil Press" Street) and its continuation at Shuk HaBesamim are the main lines of the Cardo that, since the Roman era – 135 CE – continue to cut across the Old City.

Hurvat Rabbi Yehudah he-Hasid, also known as the Hurva Synagogue, was the most impressive of the Ashkenazi synagogues erected in the Old City.During Israel's War of Independence the synagogue was bombarded and destroyed; a single arch was reconstructed and became a notable Jewish Quarter symbol. The synagogue was restored and, in 2010, re-opened as a venue for worship and as a beit midrash (study hall).

The Market Rooftops – better known as the Galicia Courtyard Rooftops – is the promenade that extends over the Old City market rooftops. The compound is situated at the historic intersection of the ancient thoroughfares – the Cardo and the Decumanus Maximus – and is also the meeting place of the Old City's four quarters. The promenade offers unique views of the Temple Mount, the Tower of David and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Sounds of Jerusalem Yad Ben ZviAn evening spent in "a different light," in search of voices, sounds and melodies in the special ambience of Jerusalem, from sundown into night.
We will sample the various performances that the Sounds of the Old City Festival has to offer. Amid the call of the muezzin, the peal of church bells and the rustle of magical Old City lanes we will hear stories and legends and learn about beliefs and ideas shared by generations of Jerusalemites. And, underneath all of these sounds and stories, we might just discern the beating heart of the city itself.

Voices and Sounds of the Jewish Quarter Yad Ben ZviWe will tour the alleyways of the Jewish Quarter, sampling the Sounds of the Old City street performances its melodies and voices. We will hear about melodies of past eras whose poignancy touched the heavens. From King David's lyre to the music of the Levites in the Temple, through the modern-day "Hava Nagila." Together we will unearth the tales and legends that lie hidden under the Old City cobblestones.Itinerary: Jaffa Gate, the Armenian Quarter, King David's Tomb, Zion Gate, the Jewish Quarter, the Western Wall.

The tour starts with a climb to the Old City's highest and loveliest observation point the top of the Pezael Tower in the Tower of David Museum.From there we will behold Jerusalem in all her glory: mosque minarets, synagogue and church domes, gold, silver, light and bells.From the Tower of David we will descend to the colorful shuk alleyways of the Christian and Armenian quarters, familiarizing ourselves with Jerusalem's unique soundtrack the peal of church bells, the calls of muezzins, and the voices raised in prayer from the Jewish Quarter courtyards and the Western Wall plaza. We will conclude our tour with a sampling of Sounds of the Old City events.
