The Flying Tomatotm, the only snowboarder your mum has heard of, that Olympian guy, yeah he’s coming. Shaun White is so big he’s the Shaun White of snowboarding.Reigning Olympic champion and world snowboarding legend, shaun White is heading to new Zealand this month to compete at the Audi Quattro Winter games nZ 2013. He will be joined by a host of elite snow sports athletes with more than 25 nations confirmed so far and many more expected to register in the run up to the event that begins on 15 August. White won Olympic gold in snowboard halfpipe at vancouver 2010 after dominating the same event at the inaugural Winter games nZ six months earlier. still regarded by many as world number one in halfpipe, he will face stiff competition at Cardrona Alpine Resort this year from the likes of Iouri Podladtchikov from switzerland and Finland’s Markus Malin who took superpipe silver at January’s X-games Aspen.Winter games nZ chief executive Arthur Klap said the quality of entries means this year’s event is shaping up to be the best ever.

“The 2013 games is a vital stepping stone to sochi and the importance of Olympic qualification is clearly attracting all the top names to new Zealand. I would expect many of the medal winners here in the southern Alps to be on the podium in Russia next February and this is our chance to see them compete first hand” he said. “shaun White’s performance at Winter games nZ 2009 will long be remembered and it’s a testament to our position as one of the world’s top five winter sports events that he is scheduling a trip down under along with so many other top athletes as part of their Olympic preparations.” Winter games nZ 2013 takes place over 11 days from 15-25 August at the international resorts of Coronet Peak, Cardrona Alpine Resort and snow Farm. set against the spectacular backdrop of new Zealand’s southern Alps, the games also include a full Downtown sessions festival programme featuring films, live music and entertainment in Queenstown and Wanaka. For further information visit www.wintergamesnz.com

Tattoo artistry was common in pre-colonial Maori culture, with the practice of ta moko – often on the face – being the ultimate statement of Maori cultural identity and integrity, as well as a reflection of one’s whakapapa (genealogy), tribal and family affiliations and social standing. During the colonial period, the practice declined due to the macabre trade in mokomokai: the preserved, severed heads of Maori that had been decorated by ta moko. The combination of traditional moko and conventional European tattoo sees body art as a crucial part of new Zealand’s bicultural identity. This liberal attitude towards the form of body modification has made new Zealand one of the most tattooed countries per capita in the world. Queenstown, as a permanent fixture on the international jetset and backpacker trails, is a hotspot for the art form, with many choosing to get inked

as a permanent reminder of their connection to new Zealand. As tattooing is permanent, it should not be undertaken lightly or without trusting your artist. “The most technical piece I have done is a big cover-up of some really bad work on a client’s back” explains Andy, a tattoo artist at QT Ink. “I have been free-handing and doing pieces as I go and my client is now really happy.”Andy studied visual arts at university and sees tattooing as a way of putting visual styles on people. “It’s cool making walking canvasses!” he says, whilst needling away at my forearm. “Everyone is different and tattoos add to that individuality.” With that in mind, tattoo is now seen as a respected form of self expression in the mainstream across a variety of cultures, countries and socio-economic backgrounds. However, a stigma still persists among certain professions (such as the famous case of Air new Zealand stopping an interview with a proud moko-wearing Maori woman) and this, along with the permanent nature of indelible ink, should be taken into consideration when choosing your body art.

palm lines surgically altered to change fortunes Palmistry has always been very popular in Japan only now modern day believers are taking matters into their own hands by using plastic surgery to alter or extend their life, love and success lines and hopefully change fate. Takaaki Matsuoka, a plastic surgeon at the Shonan Beauty Clinic, has been performing these palm-line altering surgeries. Matsuoka knew nothing about

palmistry until a client asked him to change some of her palm lines. Unsure he could pull off such a procedure, he started searching through medical journals and found it was already practiced in Korea. He studied the methods and then performed the surgery for ¥100,000 ($1,000). It turned out alright, and since then 37 clients have had their palm lines changed or added at the Shonan Beauty Clinic.

I don’t really know, I’m pretty sure I blacked out. It’s a question I’ve been asked a lot lately. For me, the lessons hidden in the past two months are applicable beyond explosions and complete destruction. I think they also apply to writer’s block, creative embargos and brain freezes. So I decided to load a couple of bullet points, in order to pass on the DIY pseudo-wisdom that ensues behind a catastrophe.1. When you see flames, start

planning- it’s never too soon to think about the next step. Assume it’s all gone then you’ll be pleasantly surprised if anything makes it out (but it probably won’t).

2. Take care of those around you first - I’m always surprised at how keeping community together at all costs can make things easier down the line.

3. vacation isn’t a solution. Pick the impossible option.

4. Focus on what you’re doing - I asked a musician once “Who are you listening to right now?” He said “Myself.” What an arrogant jerk, but a valuable point is how can you come up with something original if you’re saturated in others’ sound?

5. Reduce alcohol consumption - but increase quality of alcohol consumed.

This alien-looking contraption is a gaming headset by Emotiv that allows you to play a variety of concentration-based games on a PC. It uses your brain waves to play the games in which you can push and pull boulders, levitate objects and perform other telekinesis-like actions. It works by matching certain brain activities – like concentrating or thinking about something in particular – with certain actions during a calibration you perform before starting the game.

How did it all come about?I found out through some friends in California that I met at Burning Man; it’s been happening over there for about ten years. It’s been an idea knocking around for a while, and we finally got it started. What was the first film that you showed? It was The Wall, shown in a car park near the CBD.Was all the equipment borrowed?Mostly yes, though there is an FM transmitter we have so now we can actually have people pull up in their cars!Is it going to be just a winter thing? We’d like to do it throughout the year though obviously it’s easier in the winter with the darkness. What size crowds have you had?Between 30 and 40, though with the last one being Rocky it was a wee bit lower as there were a few other things on that night like Thriller in the Chiller.

If you were to get caught would there be a bit of hell to pay?I don’t think so, so long as it doesn’t get too loud. In the States they sometimes get moved on as the authorities don’t really like too many people congregating, but we’re not at that stage yet! Would it get to the point where you’d have to restrict it, or would it be a case of more the merrier?Oh more the merrier, but yeah, we don’t want to upset anyone with it getting too loud or anything. We shouldn’t have too many problems as the films won’t always be mainstream, we do want to sometimes get highbrow films in there, a few that some people won’t have heard of.Will they always keep in with a theme, like Hot Fuzz playing right after World’s End has come out. Some kind of tie-in?Yeah, just to keep it interesting and to keep us interested. What’s your favourite kiwi film?In My Father’s Den was a great film, definitely up there.

Traditionally, decanters were used to aerate wine by pouring the wine first into a shaped glass/crystal/china vessel (allowing the wine to absorb maximum oxygen as it slowly pours out of its wine bottle home into the vessel) and then into the drinking glass. The larger surface area that the decanter allows (compared to

relatively no surface area in a wine bottle) also ensures greater contact of the wine with the air. now it seems there is a newcomer hitting the market. The so-called “Magic” wine decanter means you pour directly from the wine bottle into your glass through a decanter – and seemingly you can even hear the decanter working! What will they think of next? Apparently this device works rather well – I cannot confirm such as I have not used one yet, but suffice to say, it certainly creates a dramatic presentation for aerating your wine!

The bulbs are blown out, the floor’s full of glass, but two men are honour bound to keep playing, pouring their sweat into the parched earth like libation. THE IlluSIonIST (2006)A supernaturally talented magician attempts to undermine the rigid social structure of turn-of-the-century vienna by using his powers to win the love of his upper-class, childhood sweetheart in director neil Burger’s cinematic adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning author steven Millhauser’s short story. Though the ill-fated childhood romance between cabinetmaker’s son Eisenheim (Edward norton) and upper-class sophie von Teschen (Jessica Biel) eventually resulted in the heartbroken young man leaving Austria to explore the world, his dreams of one day reuniting with the beautiful duchess never faded. upon returning to vienna 15 years later as a talented and renowned illusionist, Eisenheim’s hopes of a reunion seem dashed when he learns that sophie is currently engaged to the Crown Prince leopold (Rufus sewell). As the tensions between the Eisenheim and leopold elevate, urbane Chief Inspector uhl (Paul giamatti) finds his sympathy toward Eisenheim growing, despite his formal obligations to the powerful prince

I stand to leave my world asunder stumbling blindA voice just like yours calls me from afarYou didn’t know you had the power as the plates

A cold wind blows you from tomorrow into yesterdayAs the bells fall down all around me nowThe birds still call your name each morning just

The bells fall down around me ringing their sad lament

Never to ring again the way they rang for youThe bells fall down around me ringing such cruel

The memories almost bring more pain than joy these days

Perhaps that’s not true and it’s just regret butI wake some times I swear I’ve heard you call my

it’s a 38-degree Sunday and the closest ocean is the Gulf of mexico, which is a giant tub of bathwater, both in the temperature sense and the contains-hair-and-skin-particles sense. There’s refuge in the cold springs, but the hipsters have already barricaded it off with a fixie pile to the north and a judgy stare force field to the southeast. The sitch couldn’t be more dire when you suddenly realise – wait, it’s Sunday?! Chickenshit bingo time.

You’re in Austin. It’s the capitol of Texas (which ain’t the south, it’s Texas) and it’s the only liberal county in the entire state, which is 2.6 times the landmass of nZ. Austin is a hot, sweaty crockpot stewing an all-meat chili of cowboys, good ole’ boys, and Boy georges. Don’t worry, the vegan scene is huge there too.“Keep Austin Weird” is the city’s motto, which dovetails perfectly into “The

Home of Chickenshit Bingo,” the motto of ginny’s little longhorn saloon on the north side. Every sunday dozens gather in this dank windowless honkey-tonk to play a version of bingo where your card is a numbered sheet of ply and the caller is a hungry chook’s unpredictable bowels. Impressed? There’s more.Austin’s pub scene is like your first girlfriend from uni – cheap, dirty, loud and filled with all different kinds of dudes. Rainey street is a historic district filled with century-old homes that have been rezoned and crudely remodeled into indoor/outdoor bars. Downtown you have 5th and 6th streets where Wranglers grind up on tramp stamps outside grubby music venues. Take 6th street East of the freeway for tighter pants and bigger tattoos. Then there’s south Austin – home to massive fairy-lit car parks filled with food carts selling things that you want in and around your face immediately. And nothing in Austin gets jammed in your face harder than the live music. Pick a venue – or any bar or café for that matter – walk in at 4pm on a Tuesday, and there’s a band playing. And they’re good. The only trouble with Austin is that it’s found – the fastest-growing city in the us, to be exact. But with the amount of chickenshit going on there, you’d be a goddamn Yankee not to visit.

Magic works because you believe in it. It has a quality that keeps all sorts of lovely stuff like childlike wonder, optical illusions, mythical creatures, miraculous events, fairy tales and supernatural mysteries so appealing. Regardless of your religious or political persuasion, we can all agree that there is something really beautiful about faith, because it makes for great stories and it keeps wonder at our very existence alive. Einstein said that the reason that he did science at all was to understand the cosmic magic he saw in everything. If you really look at an elephant, and the fact that it has a trunk that it picks things up with

protruding from the middle of it’s face - is it really so hard to conjure the idea of a unicorn? Ever seen some of the craziness scientists are discovering at the depths of the ocean? Some of it’s positively alien! There was a group of writers in Latin America that started a literary style called magical realism. The way it worked was that the tales they told were fiction, but went just a bit deeper into the realm of make believe. They saw the magic, the fantastic in the world and they would infuse their stories with the unbelievable to showcase the beauty that exists all around us. The more mind blowing the discoveries about the nature of reality, the more we can appreciate that we barely know anything. The magic behind discovery is that it doesn’t disappear. The mysteries of the universe are so remarkable, so outrageous, it’s perfectly plausible to think that everything is so painfully, delicately and beautifully complicated that the more we reveal, the more enchanting life is. If you want more abracadabra in your life, read some articles about science and believe in the magic of reality.
