Processes overlap and interact throughout a project or phase.

Processes are described in terms of:• Inputs (documents, plans, designs, etc.) • Tools and Techniques (mechanisms applied to inputs) • Outputs (documents, products, etc.)

The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)

is a collection of processes and knowledge areas generally accepted as best practice within the project management discipline.

As an internationally recognized standard (IEEE Std 1490-2003) it provides the fundamentals of project management, irrespective of the type of project be it construction, software, engineering, automotive etc.

PMBOK recognizes 5 basic process groups containing 42 processes and 9_knowledge areas typical of almost all projects.

The Project Management Knowledge Areas organize the 42 project management processes into nine Knowledge Areas.

1. Integration Management2. Scope Management3. Time Management4. Cost Management5. Quality Management6. HR Management7. Communication Management8. Risk Management9. Procurement Management

Project Management Knowledge Areas describe the key competencies that project managers must develop.

• Four core knowledge areas lead to specific project objectives (scope, time, cost, and quality).

• Four facilitating knowledge areas are the means through which the project objectives are achieved (human resources, communication, risk, and procurement management).

• One knowledge area (project integration management) affects and is affected by all of the other knowledge areas.
