Vredefort Dome Near Parys Dome was created by a huge meteorite that hit Earth over two billion years ago Meteorite was the size of Table Mountain. Crater is 380 km wide and 16-18 km deep. Oldest and largest meteorite impact site in the world Declared a WHS in 2005 Abseiling, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking and visits to Anglo Boer War sites and a distillery where “witblits” is made. Golden Gate Highland NP At the foot of the Maloti mountains. Brandwag rock that looks like a guard that overlooks the camp. Cathedral caves, the vulture restaurant

and Van Reenen family graveyard can be seen here. Gets it’s name from the gold colour of the park’s sandstone cliffs. Home to black wildebeest, eland, blesbok, springbok, zebra and rare bearded vulture Activities include hiking, game viewing, game drives, horse riding, environmental education courses and recreational activities like bowls, tennis, table tennis and snooker. Dinosaur egg found in park – date 200 million years (large dinosaur with small head that grew up to 5 metres tall)

Comrades Marathon Durban to Pietermaritzburg
Biggest and oldest ultra-marathon Direction of the race alternates each year. The “Big Five” are main hills on the course: Cowies Hill, Field’s Hill, Botha’s Hill, Inchanga and Polly Shorts. In 2011 more than 18 000 runners lined up at the start. Race was started in 1921 by Victor Clapham an ex-soldier of the Comrades of the Great War, hence the name. First race won by 39 year old Arthur Newton who still ran at the age of 72. Wally Haywood, who won the race in 1930, completed the race in 1990 at the age of 81.
Sardine run Occurs between may and July when millions of sardines swim up the KZN coast in search of warmer waters of the Indian Ocean. Attracts other species such as Cape gannets, whales, sharks and dolphins. Attracts special interest tourists and education tourists

Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape
“Place of the stone of wisdom” Was a gold and ivory trading centre Trade took place with China, India and Egypt from 1220 to 1300 AD. It became the largest kingdom in Southern Africa before it was abandoned in the 14th century. The site is an example of an Iron Age civilisation. 2003 it was declared a WHS. Game viewing and beautiful scenery is popular.
Kruger National Park
Nelspruit Largest game reserve in SA stretching across Mpumalanga and Limpopo. There are several privately owned game reserves and lodges within the Kruger National Park. Paul Kruger this sanctuary on 26 March 1898 James Stevenson Hamilton was appointed chief game warden – nicknamed siKhhukhuza (he who sweeps clean) – led to name of camp Skukuza – headquarters and main camp Fully booked 6-12 months ahead. All restaurants are outsourced. 1926 became the Kruger National park the first national park of the Union of SA Park has eight public entrance gates: Crocodile Bridge, Malelane, Numbi, Paul Kruger, Orpen, Phalaborwa, Punda Maria and Pafuri. Numbi gate the busiest. Activities in the park include game drives, bird watching, hiking and camping. Run by Mpumalanga province.
African Ivory Route The route extends for about 2 000 km along the eastern, northern and western boundaries of the province
Links a number of lodges, all off-the-beaten-track experience. Part of more than 3,6 million hectares of national parks, nature reserves and game farms stretching across the Limpopo Province. Popular ecotourism destination and offers Big Five game viewing, birding, abseiling, horse trails and hiking trails. Blyde River Canyon Blyde river confluence – red sandstone gorge Canyon starts at Bourke’s Luck and ends at the Three Rondavels Cliff plunges for nearly a km to the waters below River falls a 1000m in a 20km stretch Water dammed in agorge by a 70m wall called the Swadini dam Third largest canyon in the world and one of South Africa’s scenic wonders. Mine closed in 1970 In 1974 Transvaal Provincial authorities bought the whole town – living museum Buildings were restored to its former charm Three museums: pilgrim’s rest and Sabie News (print museum), house museum – restored home and Dresden shop-and-house museum (general store) Restored buildings: miners cottages, the Masonic Church, old bank house and Royal Hotel. Cemetry features a robber’s grave facing at right angles – believed criminals should not be buried in the same manner as ordinary folk.
God’s Window An extremely famous scenic view of the Blyde River canyon on the Panorama route. Views on a clear day up to the Mozambique border with cliffs dropping 700 m. From

The 9 km Pristine white dunes has a roaring sound in the summer when the dunes are disturbed, possibly by ground water. A natural reservoir washes out the red oxide from the dunes and it causes the suns to turn white.
Namaqualand floral beauty
Barren landscape on the western border facing the Atlantic ocean. Fairly uninhabitable, but from July to September wild flowers transform it

into a colourful landscape. The seeds of the multi-coloured daisies, aloes, gladioli and lilies lie dormant under the soil waiting for rain. About 4 000 floral species are found in the area, a quarter not found anywhere else.
SALT in Sutherland Sutherland Southern point of the Northern Cape is Sutherland. The clear, unpolluted skies and coldest town in SA Scientist study deep space Powerful enough to see one candle if it were to be placed on the moon. Telescopes are housed in huge silver domes.
