SCREENSHOTS FROM REPORT
In 2019, Asia Pacific maintained their leadership position in
the global Dietary Supplements market, in terms of retail
sales. Asia Pacific’s retail sales totalled an estimated
US$31.8 billion in 2019, comprising approximately 48.9% of
global retail sales in the Dietary Supplements market, as
illustrated in the adjacent graph.
o In Asia Pacific, the growth of the Dietary Supplements market has been
attributed to an increasing ageing population in China, India, and Japan.
In addition, there has also been an increased awareness of Dietary
Supplements in China and India, which has also contributed to the
increase in sales in the regional market.
o Within the North American market, the second largest regional Dietary
Supplements market, retail sales totalled at approximately US$17.0 billion
in 2019, which comprised approximately 26.1% of global retail sales in the
Dietary Supplements market.
o The growth in the North American region is attributed to an increased
pace of consumer lifestyles and stress levels, which resulted in more
consumers opting for healthier dietary options along with an increased
usage of non-prescription medication to supplement their health. This has
been the main driver of growth in the North American Dietary
Supplements market.
o Moreover, the increased awareness regarding the nutritional enrichment
of Dietary Supplements in the region is predicted to stimulate growth in
the future.
o In terms of the European market, the Dietary Supplements market has
been influenced by the global health and wellness trend, which has been
driving sales growth in the region.
o Other key regional markets include Latin America with approximately
US$2.7 billion (3.2%), Australasia with approximately US$1.7 billion
(2.6%), and Middle East and Africa with approximately US$1.0 billion
(1.6%).

GLOBAL DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS RETAIL SALES, BY REGION: 2019 (IN US$ MILLION)
Continuing Popularity and Expansion of Cognitive
Supplements
o Nootropics, or cognitive enhancers, are set to continue to gain popularity
within the global Dietary Supplements market over the next year.
Following global trends, the South African Dietary Supplements market is
also expected to continue to be impacted by this growing trend.
o In essence, Nootropics are herbs, foods and supplements which enhance
brain power (such as memory and function amongst others) and offer
protective benefits (such as keeping the brain sharp as it ages).
o A few nootropic ingredients which are currently trending include Huperzine
A, phosphatidylserine, antioxidant vitamins, citicoline, Bacopa monnieri,
Ginkgo biloba, Omega 3’s, B-vitamins, and magnesium L-threonate,
amongst others.
o However, in 2020, this trend is set to grow and expand into other
categories and move beyond just catering for students looking for a
mental boost to assist them with exams. In particular, it is expected that
the market will witness an expansion into the mental health and sports
categories.
o Whilst the energy drinks and alertness segments are set to remain a large
market for a significant part of the supplements industry, consumers have
become more stressed and anxious than ever before, as lifestyles
become increasingly fast-paced. Currently, up to one in six of South
Africans are suffering from anxiety, depression and substance abuse.
o With the increase in mental health awareness and as the science behind
nootropic ingredients and ‘mood foods’ continues to expand, it is expected
that consumer interest and subsequent demand for foods and
supplements that enhance mood, aid relaxation, and enhance mental
performance (without the stimulant effects of caffeine) will increase in the
coming year.
o In addition, the interest in nootropic supplements has also started to grow
amongst athletes and particularly within e-sports (i.e. professional online
gaming), and market players have started to cater for these consumers.
o An example of this is X-Gamer, a Swedish energy supplement brand,
which recently launched in the South African market. This supplement is a
non-carbonated, powdered energy drink, which contains a 27 multi-
vitamin complex, nootropic amino acids, and no added sugar.

SAMPLE FROM REPORT SA SUPPLEMENTS INDUSTRY: SA INDUSTRY TRENDS
o In terms of the local Dietary Supplements market, internet retailing has
more than doubled over the 2014-2019 period, from R42.6 million in 2014
to R111.9 million in 2019. As such, the growth and growth potential of
overall e-commerce in South Africa, and of this specific distribution
channel within the Dietary Supplements market, is thus expected to be a
significant driver of growth within the local Dietary Supplements market in
the near future.
Expanding E-Commerce Space
o The rising e-commerce space within the South African retail market is
expected to be a significant driver of growth of many market categories,
including the local Dietary Supplements market.
o Although South Africa’s e-commerce space remains relatively small in
comparison to the global e-commerce space, the market holds significant
potential for growth. E-commerce in South Africa has also made solid
progress within the local retail environment, especially in more rural areas
where the traditional distribution channels are too expensive. In addition,
traditional retailers have almost all taken on a web-presence to compete
with mail-order companies, with many outsourcing their delivery to another
service provider.
o South African online spend is currently forecast to grow at an annual
growth rate of 15% through to 2021, to represent 1% of the local retailer
sector as a whole. Furthermore, internet user penetration is currently at
47% and anticipated to grow to 60% by 2021, while mobile penetration is
at 65% and rising.
o In addition, a recent study by Ipsos has suggested that the number of
online buyers in the local market has increased significantly. According to
the study, 22% of internet users in South Africa currently shop online and
48% have shown potential of shopping online in the future. PayPal’s
regional director for South Africa and Israel has also stated that online
shopping in South Africa is likely to triple in the near future.
