The national carrier is looking to work with the trade distribution as it vows to remain competitive in the regional domestic market. The comments come after Jetstar last week announced plans to com-mence domestic flights to at least four regional points from Dec—a move which analysts claim could put ‘significant pressure’ on Air New Zea-land’s profitable domestic network. However NZ is upbeat and says it’s ready for the changing market dy-namics.“[The JQ news] doesn’t come as a surprise, and we’ve had Austra-lian competitors come and then go over the last decade and look for-ward to the competition,” says Louise Struthers, NZ’s group general manag-er New Zealand and Pacific. “While they’re a much larger Australian company, regional airline economics are tough, but this is our home and we’ll always be price competitive to defend our business.”Struthers says NZ has already sold half a million fares under $100 this

year. “And keeping it in perspective it’s five aging aircraft versus our fleet of 50 turboprop aircraft which operated five million seats in & out of regional centres,” she adds. “We’re also investing in our regional product and services like never be-fore—$300m in 14 new 68 seat ATRs, refurbished Air Nelson planes, new lounges across regional New Zealand and working with regions to drive economic development...”Struthers also points out that the car-rier will be working closely with its key trade partners on all fronts. “The trade have always played a key role in looking after our regional customers and we look forward to continuing our collaborative relationship,” she adds.

Singapore Airlines will operate 27 supplementary flights to Christ-church from 02 Dec through to 15 Feb 2016 as a result of strong demand for travel to the South Island over the summer holidays; a move which has been welcomed by Christchurch Airport. The supplementary flights represent an additional 7,290 seats into Christchurch and will offer increased connections through Sin-gapore from Christchurch to the broader Singapore Airlines and SilkAir network.Singapore Airlines general manager New Zealand Edwin Chiang says they are delighted to announce the return of the supplementary ser-vices. “Our ability to increase these

A group of Australian wineries of-fering commissionable wine tour-ism experiences is urging the trade to get on-board as it notes growing direct bookings from Kiwis.Ultimate Winery Experiences Austra-lia includes well-known Australian wineries who together are raising the profile of wine tourism, says executive officer Sally Cope.“It’s the wineries who are really en-gaged in tourism and engaging the travel industry; they create experi-ences, classes, and they’re all set up so the trade can sell them,” says Cope. “They’re fully commissionable, and easy to build into itineraries.”While wine tours may traditionally just consist of cellar door visits, the idea of this group is to offer some-thing ‘that’s a bit more substantial’, says Cope. “If you think about wine tourism it can be very unstructured. This is pre-booked, you’re expected on ar-rival, you’re a VIP, meeting the people behind the business, going behind the scenes learning something, taking a masterclass or making your own blend,” she says. “It makes the agent look like an expert, and so much about is it the kudos of meeting the people

Ramadan In MalaysiaWhile the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan is typically associ-ated with fasting, in major Malaysian cities it’s the culinary offerings for the event ‘breaking of the fast’ that draw in locals and tourists alike. From 18 Jun to 17 Jul many hotels and restaurants in Kuala Lumpur take advantage of the season, offering dining specials and Ramadan buffets, says Tourism Malaysia. There are also evening Ramadan bazaars and markets, which are only open during this time, are said to be a must-visit for foodies. The bazaar in the central Bukit Bintang district, along Jalan Berang, is one of the easi-est for travellers to get to. Tourism Ma-laysia in New Zealand director Zalina Ahmad says Ramadan is an opportu-nity for visitors to Malaysia to experi-ence the signature seasonal dishes on offer. “The most famous dish is Babur Lambuk, a warm and nutritious rice porridge filled with spices and meat. In places like the Jamek Mosque in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, this dish is served for free to everyone and many people come and have it to break their fast or just to try.” For more, see tourism.gov.my/en/intl
