Last Meeting’s Speaker - 29 August, 2013

Dr Howard Goldenberg

2

The following are articles on Dr Goldenberg taken from the webwhich sum up the essence of his talk in which he read from several of his books and gave anecdotes of his life:

Dr Howard Goldenberg is the author of the highly successful memoir, My Father’s Compass (Hybrid, 2007, 2008). His second book is the nonfiction work, Raft (Hybrid, 2009) - an intimate and candid account of his work as a doctor in dozens of remote indigenous communities, over many years.

“Life is like the marathon, he says, “an undistinguished passage made rich by the encounters along the way”. from The Age, Martin Flanagan

The following is a review of his book “Raft” which Dr Goldenberg read from during his speech:

A profound and moving insight into the lives of Aborigines in remote communities. During a period of more than a decade Dr Howard Goldenberg, a middle-aged Orthodox Jew, made over fifty working visits as a relieving doctor for Aboriginal communities in outback Australia. On these visits he observed and recorded the lives of the people he met and treated.

The reader meets a dehydrated baby whose mother gambles away money for food; Zachariah, whose infected elbow hasn’t healed for five years; an old lady who receives a gashed head while fending off her thieving husband; and Ninnigur, one of the “Strong Women” whose tireless work helps women bring babies to term safely and to protect the next generation from malnutrition and disease.

Goldenberg writes, “Aboriginal Australians are not at peace. They are variously unwell, underfed, overfed, afflicted excessively by our lifestyle diseases, confused by our drugs and drink, endowed with income but not with work, living in sickening poverty in paradisiacal places, and distracted from their serious cultural business by the trappings of our serious cultural emptiness.”

Columnist and author Alan Gold exclaims, “Raft is a delicious, warm and endearing look at a side of Australian life known personally to veryfew of us. Through his measured and beautifully constructed words, we are privileged to glimpse an ancient land and its people through the eyes of a perceptive and sophisticated, but essentially generous, man. This is a book which should be in every home, and every parent’s gift to their children.”

Author Arnold Zable writes, “Goldenberg is both observer and physician, writer and participant, tenacious in his quest for understanding and lived experience, a seeker with a passionate belief in the power of the story.”

Prize-winning biographer and novelist Robert Hillman writes, “Goldenberg is a genuine artist and poet … The book works so well for three reasons: his craft, his sensibility, and his heart … a great achievement.”

Howard Goldenberg is a doctor, writer, marathon runner and Olympic torch bearer.

Barry Hickman was at a Whitelion/Open Family leadership meeting recently and the topic of the Nosh Bus came up. Apparently the outreach workers have found that the youth seem to be opening up and connecting with them a lot quicker because of the bus which they say is terrific because only once the youth are willing to trust and connect that change is possible.

A lot of corporates and community organisations are learning of our support which is great.

It was the last day of winter and it provided perfect spring weather for the 11 Hackers who came to play.We welcomed Max for a second time and because of golf lessons from Ivan as they went around Ron’s record score (high) is still intact. The internationals were out in force and took all the day’s honors. Sven and Arthur shared the handicap honors and Julian continuing on his previous weeks good form had another 3 pars, took out off the stick, nearest the pin and the long drive. Most of the other players were not so lucky with their drivers. In group 3 no one hit the fairway. In group 1 Ron’s drive was the only one hit the fairway but it took a 30m right angle bounce off a tree to do it. After a good drive Tom was not so lucky with trees when his approach to the 5th hole hit a tree and his ball remained stuck in the tree. Tom shook it out of the, took his penalty and from 1m away dropped his next into the greenside bunker and ended up with a Rotary 9.Bringing back memories Arthur put his drive into the water hazard on the 8th hole. This time we are pleased to report no ducks were hurt. Capt Ian Cole

The Nosh Van

MC Tony Jones welcomed the large crowd to the 6th John Ilhan Tribute lunch at the MCG Member’s Dining Room Thursday 29 August. Tony told a few jokes and described what it was like waiting outside AFL House for the Essendon decision to be announced. The reporters were starving until Subway and Mr Whippy turned up and looked after them. He then introduced special guests Ricky Ponting and his wife Rianna and President Pat and Lesley Kearns. Patricia Ilhan then came to the stage and spoke about looking back on her Foundation’s achievements. She said they were now looking into egg allergy which can affect babies. With the advancement in the peanut allergy technology kids are now safer in their homes and schools where the Foundation is making a difference. She also welcomed Ricky and Rianna as new neighbours as they now live in Brighton. Vince Sorrenti was also welcomed and she thanked the hard working Event Committee of PP David Efron, Graeme Watson, Geoff Cunningham, President Pat Kearns and Anne Peacock from Crowne, Phil MacMurray and Jonathan Dixon from JD Dixon Real Estate. She encouraged us to bid on the auction items and buy raffle tickets to make it a great fundraising afternoon. President Pat Kearns then gave the following speech: “Thank you everybody for being here today. On behalf of the Rotary Club of Brighton, I can tell you that today’s event represents a great partnership. A partnership that stretches back to the Late John Ilhan’s support of various Rotary events which ensured he was presented with Rotary’s top award - The Paul Harris Fellow. The Annual John Ilhan Tribute Lunch is one of Brighton Rotary’s highest profile events and we are delighted to be here today of course with Brighton’s new residents, Ricky and Rianna. Can I just mention that the Brighton Rotary charities and organisations that we support also include: Bayciss, Les Twentyman’s 20th Man Fund and Western Chances. For all three we provide educational support. Also Lighthouse Foundation, Violent Free Families Foundation and many more. We are proud of our Community Support Programs and the generosity of the people behind such causes. In respect to today we are indebted to the support of Patricia Ilhan and the team at The Ilhan Food Allergy Foundation - especially Steve Dabkowski - Mariella Dabkowski and Celia Cummins - our Event Manager here today and for the efforts of our Rotary Events Committee, David Efron, Geoff Cunningham and Graeme Watson. Let’s make today’s John Ilhan Tribute Lunch the best ever. I invite all our members and everyone else here to support the various auction items and the raffle - proudly supported by another Brighton institution, Brighton Travelworld. Thank you everyone and enjoy the day.” Vince Sorrenti then did his very funny routine and was certainly a superior performance than last year’s comedian. He started with a joke about Warnie who he said he was the first man in history to look like a Madame Tussards statue. The large crowd really appreciated his performance. Tony Jones then welcomed Ricky to the stage and he did an interview asking questions such as “Was he ever tempted to give it one more go?” “No he wasn’t” was the reply. He knew that the best he had to offer wasn’t enough for International cricket. Tony also asked him about controversial things such as the Warner incident and the apparent rift between Clarke and Watson. Ricky observed that things had got better since Darren Lehmann became coach. “Had he ever being a walker?”. He said he hadn’t and most cricketers around the world weren’t. His favourite ground? The MCG by far. He also said the walk back from the crease was the longest walk. He now plays a bit more golf and is happy to be a resident of Brighton. You never know he might turn up at our Club. Auctioneer Jonathan Dixon then extracted money from the crowd with the auction and the well organised luncheon finished on a high note. A great event enjoyed by all.
