Welcome to the 2012 spring edition of aDm,

The OzAsia Festival is about to start and I know that Mudra Shah and the bollywood dancers based at the Ausdance SA studio are gearing up to take part in the Moon Lantern Festival. The centrED team at the Festival centre is also preparing a ‘top secret’ Flashmob to herald the start of OzAisa featuring three hundred school students and twenty one teachers on the lawns in front of the South Australian Museum at 10.30am this Thursday 13 September.

A highlight of OzAsia is sure to be the Aditi Mangalgas Dance Company, fresh from a well received season at the Edinburgh International Festival, Aditi is presenting Unchartered Seas and Timeless at the Dunstan Playhouse on 28 and 29 September at 8pm.

The Ausdance SA Choreolab October season is scheduled for the Main Theatre at Adelaide College of the Arts. It will feature new works and works in progress by independent dance artists including Alexandra Knox, Callan Fleming, Jo Naumann, Nigel Major-Henderson, Lina Limosani, Jay Mullan and more. I look forward to seeing you at Choreolab on Thursday 4 (preview), Friday 5, and Saturday 6 October at 7.30pm, tickets online through Trybooking. Dance works presented at this Choreolab season are eligible for a $15,000 development residency supported through an Artform Development grant from the Dance Board of the Australia Council.

If you work in the arts, cultural or creative sectors, or have a creative role in any sector - the Arts Industry Council of South Australia and Service Skills SA need you to help make our future stronger. $194 million has been committed to skills development in South Australia and we need to make sure the arts, creative and cultural sector gets its fair share.

These sectors are growing, which presents a great opportunity for us all. The Arts Industry Council of South Australia is working with Service Skills SA to help ensure there are affordable and appropriate learning opportunities for these sectors. In order to do this we need to know how you work, and find out what skills you need to help sustain your career, or build your organisation or business. This is a rare opportunity - and it will only work with your input, so please spend 20-30 minutes to carefully complete the survey.

To complete the survey go to: yourcreativefuture.net.au

The survey seeks input from individuals, who have a creative role, or work in the arts, creative and cultural sectors. There is also version for organisations or business in the arts, creative and cultural sectors that employ less than 10 people, and another version for organisations that employ more than 10 people. Accessible, affordable, and relevant professional development opportunities will help to strengthen the entire industry.

Ausdance SA is a membership based organisation and relies on financial memberships to provide support and to advocate on behalf of the dance sector. One of the membership benefits that Ausdance SA now offers is a link to your own website in the Members section of www.ausdancesa.org.au. Please complete a membership form to make sure that Ausdance SA has the correct contact details and a link to your website. Thank you to all of the members that have renewed recently.

Enjoy the OzAsia experience!

Leigh Warren and Dancers recently performed at the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival

The company has just returned to Adelaide following performances of the double bill of Breathe & Impulse at one of the greatest arts festivals in the world!

Renowned for defying convention and enticing audiences with sublime marriages of movement and sound, Leigh Warren + Dancers presented a unique and inspiring double bill of dance, the first time these two pieces have been performed together.

Breathe - European Premiere

Dancers writhe, intertwine and pulse with natural, spellbinding rhythm as though each gesture were merely an extension of their own breath. Set to the intensely haunting indigenous sounds of the didgeridoo, performed live by legendary player William Barton, Breathe is rooted in the ancient and modern traditions of Australia.

Leigh Warren Artistic directorFrances Rings ChoreographerWilliam Barton Composer and musicianIndia Flint Costume designerNic Mollison Lighting designer

Impulse

Placing Michael Nyman’s String Quartet No 2 at the heart of the action, dancers are inspired and propelled by the witty and dynamic music, performed live on stage by the Zephyr Quartet. Dancers, musicians and cutting-edge visual technology play together to produce a stunning visualisation of the sound itself.

Howling Like a Wolf was a huge success! There was great critical acclaim for the latest Restless show:Howling like a Wolf … simply knocks your socks off - The Advertiser ... is a marvellous and, dare I say it, magical piece of physical theatre - Marginalia... is invariably interesting and by turns strange, funny, inscrutable, touching and powerful- The Australian

Restless Cranks Up The Workshop ProgramRestless is running four Workshop series during Term 4 titledFrom The Ground Up, an extended residency at the Riverland Special School in Berri. It started in term 3 this year and will run through until the end of term 1 in 2013 when there will be a performance showing of the outcomes in the Chaffey Theatre in Renmark. The project is being run in partnership with Riverland Youth Theatre (RYT) whose Artistic Director, Olivia Allen, already has her own vibrant relationship with the school and who is keen to do more work with young disabled people in the Riverland.

Ausdance skill set for teaching dance

There are a few things to be mindful of as the end of the year approaches quickly. There is more information below, however here are some key dates:

Cherie BroadEducation & Projects Manager

The consultation period on the draft of The Australian Curriculum: The Arts ends 23 September. The new curricu-lum will, for the first time, entitle all young people to learning dance at school, a major breakthrough for students and dance educators. Ausdance has played a strong lobbying role in having dance included in The Australian Curriculum: The Arts, and has supported ACARA - the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority - in the development of the dance curriculum. We encourage you, as dance teachers in schools, students and parents, to continue having your say into the shaping of the world's first curriculum that includes all five art forms as essential subjects from reception to year 10. To find out more visit www.acara.edu.au/acara_update_090072012.html

The Ausdance skill set for teaching dance is an excellent professional development program for school teachers, dance teachers (school and studio) and aspiring teachers of dance. Participants gain the knowledge and skills needed to successfully teach dance in community, studio and school settings. Those who complete the skill set will receive a Statement of Attainment which is nationally recognised. We are currently seeking expres-sions of interest for delivery in Adelaide, Semester 1 2013, starting in January. For more information please contact me at the office 08 8212 0825, or email [email protected]

Ausdance SA Indigenous Dance AllianceErnabella Dance Competition - Pukatja, South AustraliaIndigenous dance students from the Wiltja Residential Program, also known as Young Mob, performed at the Ernabella Dance Off in Pukatja, far north South Australia in mid-August. The ensemble performed a work created by Ausdance SA tutor Adrianne Semmens, drawing on cultural, contemporary and hip hop techniques and was funded by the Ausdance SA Indigenous Dance Alliance (ASAIDA) a program supported through an Arts SA Strategic Community Partnership grant. The dancers have been rehearsing since May this year and have impressed Adrianne and the Wiltja staff with their improvement and dedication to dance.

After a day and a half of travel the students rehearsed one last time before performing at Ernabella Anangu School to fellow performers and community. Many local schools travel to Ernabella from across the Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands to present entertaining and diverse dance works and compete in the dance competition. Guest performers, Wiltja closed the night and wowed audiences with their serpent and dancing. Congratulations to Kenmore Park Anangu School for taking out first place in the competition.

Independent dancer, choreographer Ade Suharto has returned to Adelaide following 5 months of overseas travel which enabled her to focus on her choreographic practice. Most recently, she completed a 10-week Asialink Arts Residency with master solo artist, Mugiyono Kasido in Solo, Central Java. Together, Ade, Mugiyono and gamelan composer, Dedek Wahyudi, explored the music of Claude Debussy and Javanese gamelan, to re-imagine a new space where the two forms of music meet for dance performance.

The Asialink Residency also enabled Ade to complete a first-stage development with emerging musical talent, composer/vocalist Peni Candra Rini. Their collaborative project, Ontosoroh is a new Australian-Indonesian dance/music work which is inspired by the famous, historical Indonesian novel, This Earth of Mankind by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Prior to that, Ade stayed one month in Paris with support from Arts SA, to initiate dance projects with Indonesian dancer, Kadek Yulia Moure and composer, Christophe Moure. Kadek and Christophe are two artists dedicated to the contemporary Indonesian performing arts at Cité de la Musique. Ade has also been appointed to the role of Director of the next INDOfest which will take place in April 2013 in Adelaide.

Congratulations to Hannah Timbrell recipient of the 2011 Outlet Dance Award.
