SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT WINTER BREAK CAMPS
The South Charlotte Sports Report has the perfect game plan for your children over the long winter break! Our 4 sports camps are designed to provide both excellent instruction and an opportunity for your children to escape the house for a few hours! We are excited to offer a volleyball, basketball, indoor football and a baseball and softball camp in December. All four camps are led by some of the top coaches in our area, including Zoe Bell and Karen Bradbury (volleyball), Mike Craft (basketball), James Martin (football) and Jake Robbins (baseball.) “The South Charlotte Sports Report strongly believes in hiring the best coaches to staff our camps,” said President Tripp Roakes. “When parents enroll their children in our camps, they can rest easy about the high level of instruction we provide to the campers.”
On the morning of November 7, 2009 a team of twelve dedicated and determined young ladies gathered at South Charlotte Middle School to prepare for Char-Meck Championship games in their 14-U Fastpitch Softball Division. After taking an early loss in the tournament the Pineville-Ballantyne Community Athletic Association (PCAA) 14-U Stars had racked up three consecutive wins while playing through the loser’s bracket in the double elimination tournament. To win the Fall 2009 Champi-onship the team would need two wins against a formidable opponent from the South Park Athletic Association (SPAA).
After completing their warm up routine the coaches gathered the team in a vacant outfield and spoke for a few minutes about attitude, effort, focus and what would be needed to overcome the challenge that lay ahead. The coaching staff then gathered up equipment and moved down to the field where the opposing team waited leaving the PCAA Stars to talk amongst themselves for a few minutes.
As the umpires, opposing team and fans waited the Stars walked into the dugout as a team and took the field with a real sense of determination and purpose. Four hours and two exciting wins later The Stars accepted their tournament champion-ship trophies. As the team gathered around and the coaches began the typical “after the game talk” a coach referenced the pre-game discussion and praised the girls for demonstrating the determination and mental toughness that was spoken of. FEMALE ATHLETES FACE UNIQUE CHALLENGES
As you probably noticed on the front page of today’s South Charlotte Sports Report, we are going to host a unique Ladies Sports Summit on January 9th. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to add this to our family of youth sports programs. Over the last 81 issues of our newspaper, I have had the privilege to meet so many outstanding female student-athletes in South Charlotte. So many of these young ladies have since graduated from high school only to move into starring roles on college athletic teams. Millions of dollars have been awarded to South Charlotte based female student-athletes over the last three years. With all this excitement and good news, also comes a whole set of issues related directly to females. Their level of knee injuries are higher, they face all sorts of nutritional obstacles and they must overcome certain aspects of their body limitations. These young ladies must also face emotional challenges and sometimes ridicule from others for being an athlete. We have heard all sorts of stories that can bring tears to your eyes. Many refer to this as the “hidden” part of female sports. The story behind the box score, the stories that may only be known by the athlete and sometimes the parents. With this in mind, I have partnered with Alan Tyson of Architech Sports and Physical Therapy to host the 1st Annual Ladies Sports Summit. Alan is one of the top Physical Therapist and Sports Performance Specialist in the country. He works with professional athletes, Olympic gold medalists all the way down to recreational league athletes. He understands many of the challenges faced by female athletes. In addition to Alan, we will welcome other well known doctors, athletes and coaches to the summit. USA National Team swimmer Justine Mueller will be among the special guests to share her knowledge and personal experiences. Experts from the fields of nutrition, eating disorders and men-tal performance will also speak. A roundtable discussion with current college athletes will be held along with a presentation from a college coach and an admission director. This event is designed to help our female student-athletes prepare for the future. Parent’s are encouraged to attend with their children as well. The South Charlotte Sports Report remains committed to the advancement of female sports in our area. I hope you will consider attending this valuable summit. SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT
After the coaches had talked the team then had their chance to talk about the after-noon’s events. After the typical praise for one another a player spoke up and said – coach, I think your talk before the game helped, but I think the talk the players had after you left may have really helped us win.
What had happened during that 5 min-utes these 12 young ladies were left alone?
They talked of Natalie Yokeley, a team-mate and friend who lost a difficult battle with cancer. They prayed together and then dedicated their run to the championship to Natalie.
Who was Natalie Yokeley? Natalie was an amazing young lady who attended Quail Hollow Middle School and loved to play soft-ball. She was diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma (spinal tumor) in February of 2008. She fought valiantly during her ordeal and set a shining example for others. Nata-lie obviously touched the 12 players of this
team the way she touched everyone she met. Through these fine young ladies Natalie’s love & spirit lives on. She went home to be with Jesus on November 24, 2008.
Natalie, from the PCAA 14-U Stars, this Championship is dedicated to you. We love you and miss you.

BASKETBALL CAMP DECEMBER 21 & 22 9:00AM-12:30PM
AGES 5-15 BOYS AND GIRLS
The South Charlotte Sports Report is excited to offer a two day version of what we believe is one of the top basketball camps in the area. Over the last few years, The South Charlotte Sports Report has hosted 15 basketball camps. With each camp, we see more and more return customers. Our basketball camp focuses on the development of basketball funda-mentals. Our philosophy on success in basketball revolves around a building a solid fun-damental base. Under the leadership of Ardrey Kell High School Head Coach and former Davidson College basketball assistant coach Mike Craft and veteran Youth basketball coach Tripp Roakes we provide a well qualified staff of coaches to work with your children.
The timing of this camp provides a great opportunity for Mom and Dad to do a little holiday shopping while the kids enjoy time on the beautiful Ardrey Kell basketball court.
Each child will receive instruction on shooting, moving without the ball, dribbling, defense, passing and rebounding. We maintain a low coach to camper ratio allowing the campers to get to know all the coaches on a first hand basis. We also strive to keep campers in the same groups with their friends and other players their age. Our camps are designed to place campers in position to succeed inside the camp and beyond.
In addition to other high school coaches, we will be joined by college athletes from the area that are eager to pass their skills on. Many of these college players once played at the local recreation associations and middle schools in the area!
This Basketball Camp is also designed to provide players of all ages and abilities the chance to experience success on the basketball court! Each player is placed into a position that will allow for maximum enjoyment of their week of basketball camp.
Based on our Holiday Camp last December, we expect an early sell-out, so sign up fast!

Nine year old Emma Smith has been named the Game Day Team Pack Good Sport of the Week. The Sharon Elementary 3rd grader is the daughter of Jeff and Shannon Smith.
Emma just finished a great season of soccer at Park Sharon Athletic Association where her coaches recognized her good sportsmanship from start to finish. When asked what sportsmanship means to her, Emma replied, “ Good sportsmanship means to never give up and if you lose a game to not get upset, it was only one game, and it does not mean you are a bad player it just means you might need to work on something. It also means to always encourage your teammates and not get mad at them if they do some-thing wrong.”

MADISON STEED AIMS FOR VOLLEYBALL SUCCESS
Fourteen year old Madison Steed is one busy
volleyball player! The Community House Middle School eighth grader recently completed a successful season on the volleyball court for the Cavaliers. The daughter of Zelton and Laura Steed has been playing volleyball for three years.
Oddly enough, she got her start in volleyball be-cause of her Dad, Zelton. In addition to serving as a college basketball official, Zelton also spends time directing traffic as a volleyball referee.
“I started going with him to watch his games-I loved it and knew I wanted to play from the first game I saw. He taught me the fundamentals and then I started playing for Carolina Juniors. That was 3 years ago!”
As a middle schooler, Madison gets to play all po-sitions, but she loves it when she gets to spring up for a kill across the net!
“I try to spike the ball hard!”Madison spends a lot of time trying to improve as
a player. Last weekend her family traveled to Raleigh to watch Ardrey Kell play in the state championship game. Knowing that the Knight’s Castle will be her home next season, Madison is learning all she can about Coach Zoe Bell and her style of play.
“I was so excited to see Ardrey Kell and to hope someday that would be me. I saw how hard I need to practice. I learned a lot from watching them play!”
Madison’s season at Community House was great this year. The team had several returning 8th graders who had game experience from last year and club volleyball along with a strong group of 7th graders who had played before. The Cavaliers were able to reach new heights with the program this fall.
Away from the volleyball court, Mad-ison brought home all A’s and one B in the first quarter. She is also a member of The Beta Club and her favorite class is Science.
Madison enjoys spending time with her family,
“My younger sister is my biggest fan and she also plays volleyball. I like hangin out with my friends, traveling, shopping and just relaxing at home! “
Keep an eye out on the volleyball court, Madison Steed has the makings of becoming a very successful high school volleyball player! We wish her the best of luck as she pursues her goals.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT
One year ago the Ardrey Kell Knights volleyball team ended the season with a 12-11 record. While it was a move in the right direction, the record wasn’t quite up to par for new Ardrey Kell Head Coach Zoe Bell. The legendary coach had built a dynasty at Providence High School winning four state titles and 432 games. With the season over, Coach Bell and her play-ers went to work. The focus became to work together more as a team and use the available talent to climb to the top of the Southwestern 4A Confer-ence.
“We started last March getting ready for this season. It was a total team effort,” said Coach Bell. “They learned how to compete and they started trusting one another. Also, they bought in to what I was teaching them. My favorite motto “You don’t know unless you go.”
After an up and down start to the season, the ladies began to play rock solid volleyball. Leading players for The Knights included, Virginia Tech signee Samantha Gostling, a middle hitter Diana Marren, setter Aubrey Olsen, outside hitter Kristin Wycza-wski, Kari Moran and Meg Peer. The
Knights really began to roll in the conference tournament, surprisingly claiming the championship. With many exciting five set matches, The Knights marched all the way to the state championship game before los-ing to undefeated Greenville Rose High School. Ironically, Ardrey Kell’s baseball team also lost to Rose in the 2008 state championship before win-ning the title this spring.
“We played with a lot of confidence at the end of the season. They knew their roles and accepted them. We were the underdog in most matches but we play with heart and never gave up. We learned from our losses early. We really executed fundamentally at the end of the season. It just all fell in place.”
The team has so much to be proud of this season. The amazing success of Charlotte volleyball continues and with so many great middle school teams in our area, don’t count on South Charlotte falling off the volley-ball map anytime soon.
The South Charlotte Sports Report congratulates Ardrey Kell High School on a superb volleyball season!

TRUE LOCAL TEAM PLAYS HARDBALL WITH NATIONALLY
BUILT TEAMS
A team of local baseball players recently went 3-1 in the famed World Wood Bat Association World Championships in Jupiter, FL Considering the makeup of many of the teams in the event, the 3-1 result is very impressive. For example one of the teams The O’s played called themselves the Southeast Texas Red Dev-ils. A quick check of their roster showed that the players weren’t just Southeast Texas residents. The roster included kids from California, Louisiana, Oklaho-ma, Arizona and all across Texas. While this is certainly not against the rules on this level of baseball, it does help to highlight the accomplishments of The O’s. The On Deck team was from about a 30 mile area in and around Charlotte , with many of these kids playing together since they were 13. Jack Reinheimer, Caleb Cunningham, Ashton Lover, Ben Hurst and Grant Fisher were teammates at 13 and 5 or 6 others joined at 14.
This is a tight knit team with hometown values. They are usually one of the only teams to say a team prayer before the start of play as well.
In today’s world of high-level travel ball its refreshing to see a true local team go head to head with teams that have no idea who is wearing what jersey on a given day. The South Charlotte Sports Report congratulates the On Deck O’s for a successful fall season and for staying true to your hometown!
