Our school was able to once again showcase our very talented students and staff to the wider community. Our school has received confirmation of the implementation of two new Multicategorical Classes (MC) starting in 2015. Each campus will have one of these programs providing intensive support for students with identified mental health and/or autism. The maximum number of students for each of these classes is 10. Each class will have a full time teacher and student learning support officer. We will also gain an additional executive position of Assistant Principal Special Education as one of these positions. We will now be able to offer 3 special education classes as we already have the Early Intervention Class. Auditions for our Talent Quest will be held on Wednesday 12th November. Entry forms with this information has been sent home this week and are available at either office. Our thanks to Mrs Rouse, Mrs Woods and Miss Carter for their organisation. The Talent Quest will be for students K-6. Mrs Buckley and I will be judging the auditions next Wednesday. This will be an extremely difficult job as we have so many talented performing arts students in our school. On Tuesday 25th November our successful students will be holding a dress rehearsal and the final will be held on Wednesday 26th November in our Primary Hall. Parents and our community are invited to this final performance. Times will be advised next week. Prefect nominations for 2015 are out next Monday and close Friday 21st November, with speeches delivered Monday 1st December. Our school values student leadership and the responsibilities which are associated with these positions extremely highly. Good luck to all our students who are nominating for election. Next Tuesday, I will be accompanying our Captains and Vice Captains to the Remembrance Day Commemorative Service held at Lane Boulevard beginning at 10.45am. Our School Captain, William Lucas will be presenting a reading as part of this service. Our PPP program again this year has been a fantastic success. Next Tuesday we will be holding our graduation ceremony for our PPP students at 9.30am in the Infant Hall. The following Tuesday 18th November we will be holding our Parent Orientation at 9.15am in the Infants Hall, followed by our student orientation in Kindergarten classrooms on Tuesday 25th November. Our big thanks to our general assistant Mr Cain who has restored the original school bell to perfect condition. The bell has been relocated to the front of the primary campus where we hope it will be identified as an integral part of our school history. Our annual band concert will be held next Tuesday at 6pm behind the Primary Hall (weather permitting), this is an opportunity for our school to showcase our outstanding band program, choir, drumming group and ukulele group. Parents are asked to bring a blanket or chair and relax on our oval and enjoy the musical experience. We hope to see a large number of our parents and community supporting this evening. Our thanks to Mr Watson for organising this event. This week we welcome back Mrs Buckley to our school. We have missed her while she has been on leave and we are all looking forward to her wonderful work with our students and staff for the rest of the year. Congratulations to Mr Tony Skinner who was honoured with Life Membership of the Mid North Coast PSSA this week. Tony has dedicated many hours to supporting our students’ involvement in sport, often in his own time. The life membership is an excellent recognition of his outstanding effort over many years. Thank you to our community for their amazing response to our Intensive Swimming Program as we have 75 students attending this year. Notes regarding payment and organisation have been forwarded to students who are attending. Have a great week Peter Hickey Principal

Congratulations to Emily Barrett 1/2DM who was chosen to be the Jacaranda flower girl at The Jacaranda Children’s Party on Saturday the 18th of October in Market Square. Emily then attended the Crowning Ceremony and she was also on the Queen’s Party Float.

Can you please ensure that all library books are returned as soon as possible in preparation for our annual stocktake. Borrowing will finish this week for all classes.

The Library Café has finished for 2014. It will recommence next year. Thanks to all the parents who have brought their children throughout the year.

Fitness Improves Academic Performance

Another study (in January 2014 Journal of Adolescent Health “The Effects of Changes in Physical Fitness on Academic Performance Among New York City Youth”) has found that being fit improves school performance. For both boys and girls a substantial increase in fitness from the previous year resulted in a greater increase in academic ranking while a decrease in fitness was associated with a decrease in academic scores.

Physical activity doesn’t all have to happen at the one time. It can be accumulated throughout the day; by walking or riding to and from school, being involved in activities at school, active play at home or taking part in organised sport after school and on weekends.

How to help kids be more active

Encourage kids and teens to try different sports or activities so they can find one or more that they really enjoy and want to continue with.

Start slowly and build up the amount of physical activity that your children do, particularly if they haven’t previously been very active.

If you don’t eat breakfast in the morning, it’s likely your kids won’t either. Kris

Kesiak/Flickr, CC BY-NC

How many times have we heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? There’s

overwhelming evidence to suggest that it is, especially for children. Eating breakfast has been

shown to improve children’s behaviour at school, and poor eating patterns can impair

adolescent growth and development.

Put simply, a good quality breakfast helps provide young people with the energy they need

for the day, and the nutrients they need to grow and develop.

Fuel for the school day

In the short-term, eating a good quality breakfast can increase feelings of alertness and

motivation to learn. Children’s high metabolic turnover and rapid growth rates mean they

need optimal nutrition. They have higher demands on their glycogen (or energy) stores

overnight as they sleep, and as they generally sleep longer than adults, children have a longer

“fasting” time (longer time without food overnight). Therefore, eating a nutritious breakfast is

especially important to provide fuel for the oxidation of glucose.

When blood glucose levels are low, hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol are released

which can cause feelings of agitation and irritability. This can then affect a child’s

concentration and may even cause destructive outbursts. Children who don’t eat breakfast

struggle to summon enough energy in the morning to cope with the demands of school.
