Semester Courses The following courses are semester-long courses offered

to juniors and seniors only:

- Contemporary Literature:In this course, students read contemporary fiction, such as The Glass Castle and Junot Diaz’s Drown

- Creative Writing: This course is built on the workshop model used in the University of Oregon’s creative writing program. Comprehensive and rigorous, students write poems, fiction, and narrative nonfiction, submit work for review, and conclude the term by creating a personal magazine.

- Oral Communications:Students learn to employ a variety of rhetorical devices and confront the process of creating and presenting effective speeches in various modes.

- Film as Literature:Students learn to analyze visual narratives by watching contemporary and classic films

Journalism

In Classic South students can also earn English credit by taking journalism.

In addition to English credit, this class prepares students to work on the nationally recognized newspaper, The Axe.

College Credit

AP Composition and AP Literature Students earn college credit after

passing a national exam.• AP Literature is also offered as a

College Now class. Students may earn up to 12 transferable Lane Community College credits.

Minimum entry requirements for taking Biology as a 9th grader:

•A level of maturity and habits of study appropriate for taking a sophomore level course. •Straight A’s in Algebra and enrollment in Geometry in Grade 9.•Four terms of science that includes basic chemistry, basic physics, and earth science in grades 7 & 8 with straight A’s (and C1 at RMS).

At the discretion of the Department, a qualifying test may be administered and/or a student’s OSAT scores may be considered for students that don’t quite meet the minimum requirements.
