The Councillor has told Local News of a wave of destruction hitting the Crumlin, Kimmage and Drimnagh areas in the last two months. And he links the crimewave to the immense burden placed on Garda resources by gangland crime: “They’re too busy with gangland funerals, and with protection and investigating those people. You don’t see them on the street any more,” Cllr McHugh said. He cites, in particular, the recent gangland funerals of David Byrne and Eddie Hutch and the continuing investigation of these murders. In the last four weeks alone, Cllr McHugh and his constituents have had to contend with: the ruin of green spaces in and around the Clonmacroise/Bangor roundabout near Eamonn Ceannt Park (better known as Sundrive Park) a stolen car set on fire in the middle of the precious fast- drying football pitch in nearby Stannaway Park, beside the Ben Dunne Gym destruction in Brickfield Park off the Crumlin Road, with bollards being smashed by a stolen car, the car being set alight and the all-weather playing area being attacked by heavy machinery, apparently chosen for maximum destruction. “In the case of Brickfield Park, the broken bollards delayed the efforts of the fire NO MORE TV BILLS EVER www.billfreetv.ie for more details VANDALS RUIN PARKS Phone: 01 624 9710 • Click: mcloil.com brigade, which couldn’t get in to put out the fire around the stolen car,” Cllr McHugh reported. However, the Councillor made it clear that he supported the efforts of the Gardaí now tackling the murders of Byrne and Hutch, and protecting their families. He simply wanted sufficient numbers to provide routine policing as well: “I put a motion before the Area Committee [of Dublin City Council], asking for a better Garda presence and more numbers, and it was passed unanimously,” Cllr McHugh reported. It seems he has some support amongst the Gardaí as well: while, officially, the local stations were as usual tight- lipped, one reliable Garda source told Local News that resources were “very much overstretched”. But that Garda had some good news as well: “We are aware of the Stanaway Park and the Clonmacnoise Roundabout incidents, and we have in fact made a number of arrests.” While several of these could end up with criminal charges, a large number were under 18: “These young offenders are referred to the JLO [Juvenile Liaison Officer].” This involved a “terrifying finger” being wagged in the face of the vandal concerned: “Yes, and that’s not much of a deterrent! There’s not exactly great respect for authority any more,” the Garda said, adding that “bad upbringing” gave rise to this unpunished culture of destruction. Meanwhile McHugh promised to work hard to provide “an alternative to the culture of vandalism”, particularly by way of sports, leisure and recreational facilities. The Sinn Féin Councillor was recently successful in securing a large tranche of funding from Dublin City Council for a number of arts, sports and leisure facilities in the area. No fear, no respectGardaí admitdelinquentshave “upperhand” as estateslive in fear

MEMBERS of AnGarda Síochánaworking in Crumlinand Clondalkin haveadmitted that thereis “nothing we cando” about violentyoung offendersaged 14 to 18. Andone of them blamedthe soft-touch ap-proach of the Juve-nile Liaison Officer(JLO) system:

“In theory, a vio-lent 16-year-old canbe charged with as-sault or criminaldamage. In practice, however, he’s goingto be given over tothe JLO.”

There, he said, the offender faced afinger- wagging fromthe Juvenile LiaisonOfficer. This, he said, held no fear for hard-ened vandals andmuggers:

“You can blamethe justice system ifyou like, but we did-n’t put that in place.”

He said there was

“no chance” of re-verting to the oldGarda Jim “Lugs”Branigan era of streetjustice. Famously,Garda James Brani-gan (he was neverpromoted) — betterknown as Lugs — in-vited the 1950s ani-mal gangs, 1960steddy-boys and1970s skinheads hisown one-stop-shopof arrest, charge andon-the-spot retribu-tion.

Those days, oneGarda said, weregone for good:

“You try that

today, you’ll see whatyou’ll get.”

But would therenot be widespreadpublic support forany strike againststreet thuggery?

“That’s a myth. There are cops whotry it, and they findthemselves in frontof the Garda Om-

budsman quickenough.”

He agreed that ayoung man turningtowards crime hadno obvious reason toturn away:

“There is proba-bly no authority inthe home. He’s cer-tainly not afraid ofus. And he’s not

afraid of the justicesystem because, forhim, it doesn’t exist.”

His commentsfollow a mini-crime-wave in Lucan, Clon-dalkin, and furthereast in Dublin SouthCentral, reportedelsewhere in theSouth and West edi-tions of this paper.Recent destructiveattacks have focusedon green spaces andall-weather pitches, open and enclosed,in Stannaway Park,

Weston Hockey Cluband public playingfields all over thesouthside. Somehave linked the re-cent crimewave toGarda preoccupationwith containing thegangland wars, fol-lowing the recentmurders DavidByrne and EddieHutch.

City rejects Freedom of Information questionsTHE CITY still won’ttell Local News whythey are turning downhouses — houses thatwould take thousandsof long-suffering chil-dren out of B+B hell.Their silence contin-ues even after an offi-cial Local NewsFreedom of Informa-tion (FOI) Act request.

City bosses con-tinue to reject a gift ofmore than a hundredhouses from a re-spected housing char-ity — and that’s justone offer, for a site inCherry Orchard inDublin South Central. The same charity areprepared to buildhundreds more, ontwo northside sites —if only City ManagerOwen P. Keegan andhousing boss DickBrady will accept thegift.

But they won’t.And they won’t saywhy.

And Local Newscan now reveal thatour FOI request, ask-ing for their reasoningon the matter, hasbeen turned down —

an extremely unusualmove for a publicbody.

The matter wasfirst reported in thisedition on February18 under the headlineCITY SILENT AS FREEHOUSES REFUSED.

(To read that storyin full, see local-news.ie, then click the“FEBRUARY 18”graphic at the top ofthe page.)

Our story wasbased on informationwe received fromthen-Councillor, andnow newly-electedSouth Central TD,Bríd Smith and hercampaign manager,Cllr Tina MacVeigh(AAA/PBPA, CrumlinKimmage).

Several times, CllrMacVeigh scheduleda motion to demandthe information fromHousing Departmentbosses. More thanonce they rushed toassure her that hermotion was notneeded: they wouldoffer the informationvoluntarily.

They never did.

members...This is not un-

usual in the HousingSPC [Strategic PolicyCommittee]. We haveasked for numerousreports at the Com-mittee including in-formation on thepublic/housing bod-ies who have ex-pressed interest indeveloping publiclyowned lands. Despitea motion beingpassed requiringManagement to givethis information...weare then told we can’thave [it] because it is‘commercially sensi-tive’....”

Interestingly, pre-cisely the samephrase was used in aletter to Local News, signed by “Tom Gor-man”, in which heturned down our ownFreedom of Informa-tion Act request:

I am refusing yourrequest, under Sec-tion 36 of the Free-dom of InformationAct... Section 36 of theAct provides for thenon release of infor-mation where suchinformation is con-sidered to be com-mercially sensitiveinformation.

His letter goes onto offer Local Newsthe “right of appeal”to “a more seniormember of staff”.While he does notgive his title, LocalNews has discoveredthat Mr Gorman is an“Administrative Offi-cer”, a grade listed byhis own union, Im-pact, as “clerical andadministrative”. Sofirst refusal has comefrom a clerk, not amanager.

Ac c o m p a n y i n gthis one-page refusalwere several lengthydocuments, one enti-tled “Housing LandInitiative FeasibilityStudy”. Buried inmounds of legal,planning and bureau-cratic jargon is a re-vealing — ifunfounded — state-ment:

Development ofthe lands should beundertaken by theprivate sector follow-ing disposal of thelands in accordancewith Section 183 ofthe Local Govern-ment Act 2001. [Em-phasis added.]

This is incorrect:Section 183 of the actin question makes nosuch specification.

However, the Cityclaim that it doeswould appear to backup the idea that Citymanagement has a

pro-private sectorbias or dogma —powerful enough topersuade them toblock a hundred-house gift such asthis, in the middle of ahousing crisis.

Cllr MacVeighand Deputy BrídSmith have long ar-gued that manyHousing Departmentdecisions are basedon this pro–privatesector bias which, atthe moment, is beingexercised at the costof an immenseamount of personalsuffering: just weeksago, RTE highlightedthe plight of motherswith children still intiny B+B rooms, livingwithout cooking orother basic facilities.

Meanwhile, as faras the housing co-opis concerned, noth-ing, not even funds(which the charity hasmanaged to raise it-self) need stand in theway of the first sodbeing turned inCherry Orchard.

The charity haseven promised tobuild without secur-ing the deeds for theland — which they in-sist the City should re-tain for the publicgood. They have al-ready told DeputySmith and CllrMacVeigh that nearlyall the proposedCherry Orchardhouses would be setaside, at low rents, forthe thousands of fam-ilies on the City’se v e r - l e n g t h e n i n ghousing list.

Meanwhile, ofcourse, the charitythat was turned downcan unilaterally de-cide to tell us every-thing they know

about that rejection, particularly of theirsouthside plan forCherry Orchard. How-ever well-placedsources in the volun-tary housing sectorhave told Local Newsthat the co-op inquestion may fearreprisals from furiousCity bosses if theybreak their silence.

After all, thatcharity continues todepend on thosepowerful City officersfor planning andother crucial permis-sions. No matter howmany houses theyoffer, their work canbe hampered by un-elected City bosseswho can always sayNO — without everhaving to tell Why.

As long as onefamily remains in adingy B+B, or as longas a dozen are threat-

ened with evictionfrom Mountjoy Street,Local News will con-tinue to ask Owen P.Keegan and DickBrady:

“Why are you

turning down the

offer of something

better?”

Particularly when

it comes with a price-

tag of zero.

LOCAL NEWS SPECIAL INVESTIGATION BY PAUL KELLY

Finally, as ourFebruary 18 editionwas going to press,MacVeigh assured usthat she was going tomake the question of-ficial:

“This time, I’mputting down a mo-tion demanding theinformation, and thistime, I won’t with-draw it no matterwhat promises theymake,” MacVeigh toldLocal News lastmonth.

But true to form, the Housing Depart-ment refused eventhis elected member’srequest for informa-tion. MacVeigh re-acted angrily on herFacebook page:

Disgracefully, theExecutive Manage-ment of Dublin CityCouncil withholds in-formation from pub-lic representativesagain.

This among manycurrent examples ofCity Council Manage-ment withholding in-formation so that theycan push throughtheir own agenda... Adisgraceful display ofnothing but contemptand disrespect for the

I FIRST got to knowPaul Daniels when Itaped a radio inter-view with him back-stage in the Prince ofWales Theatre, Lon-don. He was appear-ing in his own show,It’s Magic, breakingrecords for a show ofthat kind in runningfor over a year fromlate 1980.

He was then atthe height of hispowers: the BBC tel-evision programmethat made him fa-mous had been run-ning for two seasons, and would soon besold all over theworld. It was to bemore than a decadebefore clashes withthe Corporation —and a change in theculture — suddenlyput him off the air in1994.

With all the con-troversy surroundinghis sometimes abra-sive style, few out-side the tight circle ofmagic fanatics (ofwhich I was one) re-

alised that he wasone of the greatesttechnicians in thehistory of the busi-ness.

In a way, he suf-fered from TommyCooper syndrome:Cooper’s comic per-sona became sohuge that it made themagic secondary.Even those thoughtthey knew Cooperwere taken abackwhen, in the dressingroom, he proved assmooth an operatoras Copperfield orBlackstone at theirbest.

Similarly, thoseprepared to sit backand watch PaulDaniels work wouldsee sleight-of-handthat could baffle theshrewdest eye; and“big” effects magicrivalling anything onoffer from Siegfried& Roy or Penn &Teller.

In that depart-ment he was quick toacknowledge the life-long contribution

made by his father,Hughie Daniels, whomade much of theelaborate stageequipment; and fel-low-magician AliBongo, who servedas his technical advi-sor during the BBCyears.

D a n i e l s ’longevity in thatweekly show, with itsvoracious consump-tion of the greattropes of magic —m e t a m o r p h o s i s ,misdirection, misbe-having coins andcards, lovely assis-tants sawn in half —was a tribute to this“family business”approach. Together,Daniels himself,Debbie McGee, sonsGary, Paul and Mar-tin (particularly thelatter), dad Hughieand Ali Bongoworked tirelessly tofeed the great televi-sion monster withstunt after stunt —and new variants onold classics. Lookingback, it seems im-

PAUL DANIELS:a personal recollection

DANIELS: baffling

possible that hecame up with some-thing fresh for 140one-hour shows —over two thousandideas — but he did.

My final meetingwith Daniels, afterseveral encounters inLondon and emailsgoing back overmore than a decade, was in one of hisfavourite venues: theGaiety Theatre inDublin.

In the highlightof that show, he en-tered into an Egypt-

ian style sarc o phagus and emerged, seconds later, with achange of height, hair colour — andgender.

I had seen manya classic metamor-phosis, in theatres inDublin, London andAtlantic City, butwith all my readingon the subject, thiswas a version I sim-ply couldn’t fathom.

At that time, sneaking backstagewas easier than it isnow, so I met him

again. He was, asusual, modest, politeand restrained — afar cry from the stagepersona he hadhoned in hostileworking-man’s clubs— and we chattedabout the businessfor about twentyminutes while he re-moved his makeup.

We had a mutualfriend, a Mr SantaClaus and, by phoneand email, we hadbeen plotting aChristmas appear-ance by him in St

Stephens Green —complete with rein-deer — for sometime. In a side to himthat was little knownor understood, he in-sisted on offering hisstaging expertise fornothing, on the un-derstanding that thebest seats would bereserved for sick chil-dren. (It was myfault, not his, that thereindeer have yet toswoop down outsidethe ShelbourneHotel...)

As for the ten-

second transforma-tion, I was sotempted to ask himhow he did it. In-stead, I offered politebut genuine wonder-ment.

That’s not a badlegacy to leave tomillions of the baf-fled, over severalgenerations, in the-atres and livingrooms all over theworld.

BEWARE OF COWBOY NON REGISTERED INSULATION COMPANIES

If you decide to go ahead and insulate all of your house or maybe just an extension toyour property be very careful not to just go on the cheapest price. It is crucial that youmake sure the tradesman is registered with the NSAI, and SEAI, this simply meansthat you have comeback in the event of a problem and the company that you are em-ploying meet the relevant standards and criteria with these organizations. In order to receive your home every grant in the first place, insulation companies mustbe registered and also fully insured and tax compliant. It is always wise to get at leastthree quotes for the the work, when you decide which company you want to give yourbusiness too get some names and addresses of previous houses they did. Make sureyou ring around and then call and see the quality of the workmanship for yourself.Terry from Warm Home Insulation is a fully registered Insulation expert and he hasseen some very badly botched work from unregistered trades people and when thepeople complained as their house were literally a soppy mouldy mess that had to betorn off the walls and redone from scratch at great expense to the householder. His advice is check everything before you go ahead and get any insulation work doneat all.Warm Home Insulation can help you get your grants as well with internal dry lininggrants up to €2,400 available for wall insulation you could get as much as €4,500for a detached property. Also available is attic insulation with a grant of €300, if youhave an extension it might be very cost efficient just to get external wall insulation onthat for the moment, then in time get the rest of the property insulated. A recent property that Terry and his team put to rights was as a result of a chancemeeting with a fellow dog walker who had a real tale of shockingly bad work and inthe end the tradesman never answered his phone to the very unhappy customer.Terry and his team had to rip off the entire insulation job as it was so bad, the exten-sion on this property was literally sopping wet and smelt of dank dampness, the house-holder had invested all their savings in the job, so Terry and his team redid the wholeworks. You can hear the whole story on a podcast by logging onto http;//m.sound-cloud.com/nsai-851016859/pat-kenny-talks-to-nsai-on-how-to-prevent-substan-dard-insulation which was broadcast to highlight the dangers of engaging nonregistered contractors. Please log on to www.warmnationinsulation.ie for more information or ring Terry on087 979 8326 to get a free no obligation quote.

Connolly-Heron salutes LocalNews in Moore Street victoryLONGTIME MooreStreet campaignerJames Connolly-Heron was generousin his thanks as heand his supportersemerged victoriousfrom the High Courtlast week. He, Colm

Moore and the 1916relatives group wontheir fight to have theentire area declared anational monument.

“We are verygrateful for the sup-port we have receivedfrom Local News,

thank you,” Con-nolly-Heron told cor-respondent Paul Kellylast week.

The High Court’sJustice Max Barrett, inan unusual if not un-precedented move, made a first-hand

study of Moore Streetand Moore Lane. Andin a 400-page judge-ment he described, inalmost poetic detail, the struggles of thewounded and dyingas the reach the in-evitable moment ofsurrender.

This newspaper’scoverage of the storybegan in 2014. Wenoted at the time thatgovernment bunglinghad, as a side-effect,the pointless evictionof the Paris Bakeryfrom its home in 18Moore Street. In theprocess the Frenchfounder Yannick Foreleffectively lost hun-dreds of thousandsinvested in bakeryand retail equipment.Forel wrongly as-sumed that no gov-ernment agencywould kick him out ofsuch a historic build-ing, much less re-place it with a1970s-style mini-mall.

Tragically for him,he was wrong.

In a series of sto-ries carried in theNorth edition of ournewspaper through-out 2014, 2015 andthis year, we reporteda catalogue of his-toric, planning andtiming errors whichwould have led — butfor the High Courtvictory — to the Statedestroying one of itsown most importantmonuments. A “high-light” of these errorswas the mis-dating(ironically by the Na-tional Monumentsauthorities them-selves) of most of thehistoric terrace on theeast side of MooreStreet. When told oftheir error, officialsthere told LocalNews, in an infamousreply that becamepart of the High Courtpleadings:

“You can’t makean omelette withoutbreaking eggs.”

Now, however, the acting Arts Minis-ter, HeatherHumphries, has beeninstructed by theHigh Court to “re-view” her plans for a1970s style mall.

Meanwhile, reac-tion from other par-ties has beenuniversally positive.Dublin MEP LynnBoylan welcomed theruling:

“I am delighted!”she told Local News.

“The 1916 rela-tives have fought tosave Moore Street forfifteen years now.Today’s decision isthe result of muchhard work and re-solve in the midst ofopposition from gov-ernment after gov-ernment who ignoredtheir pleas.”

Fianna FáilSpokesperson forDublin, DarraghO’Brien TD (DublinFingal) said:

“We fully wel-come this huge vic-tory with the decisionby the High Courttoday. The previousGovernment tried toignore the historicsignificance of MooreStreet and they arro-gantly pushed theirown plans for the sitedespite great opposi-tion.”

Aengus ÓSnodaigh (SF, DublinSouth Central) alsowelcomed the news, and congratulatedthose fighting theMinister:

“We would like toextend our gratitudeto Colm [Moore], hislegal team and to the1916 Relatives andothers who sup-ported and cam-paigned for this day.”

Local News willcontinue to follow thestory of the MooreStreet and MooreLane monuments inits North edition.

Mayor highlights support for TravellersMAYOR of SouthDublin CountyCouncil Sarah Hol-land today high-lighted her supportfor Travellers in thecounty, whilst dis-cussing a motion shehad tabled. The mo-tion was to ensurethat the council

would endeavour toprovide culturallyappropriate emer-gency accommoda-tion, in the event thatany sites failed a na-tionwide health andsafety audit.

The health andsafety audit cameabout following the

tragic fire at Carrick-mines last year, inwhich 10 people losttheir lives, including5 children.

In the aftermathof the fire, it becameclear that racismagainst Travellerswas prevalent andthat more needed to

be done by those inauthority to tacklethese prejudiceshead on.

Cllr Holland said:“South DublinCounty Council havean excellent recordin providing cultur-ally appropriate ac-commodation forour neighbours.

The council havegood relationshipswith our tenants and

there was full consul-tation and commu-nication in the runup to the audit.

However, therewere concerns fromTravellers groups inthe area that wecould see a repeat ofthe situation inCounty Louth, whereby familieswere evicted andasked to self-accom-modate by the

county council.Families then

found it very hard tofind a B&B or hotelwho would acceptthem. This led toone of the most mar-ginalised groups in

Irish society feelingfurther isolated, andwe wanted to avoidthat.

The council willalways endeavour todo the best we canwithin the means

available to us, butthis was a way ofmaking our supportfor Travellers public, and recognising theirdifferent culturalneeds.”

DUBLIN TO WELCOME A MILLION PEOPLE OVER THE

EASTER WEEKENDDublinTown, Dublin City’s Business Improvement District, welcomes the Easter Rising event programme arrangedby Ireland 2016, the official state organiser of the 1916commemorations, which includes a 4.5km parade doublethe size of that on St. Patrick’s Day and the biggest cul-tural event ever staged in this country.

Over the course of the celebrations, footfall is ex-pected to reach in the region of 1 million people, with60,000 foreign tourists estimated to fill hotels across thecity. This has the potential to boost the economy by up to€75 million.

In addition to this, the upcoming events, whichmainly focus on O’Connell St, offers an opportunity forDubliners and tourists to reacquaint themselves with theNorth side of the city, which has been for too long over-looked. DublinTown believes this will create a springboardfor future development of this district.

DublinTown CEO Richard Guiney comments: “This isa great opportunity for Dublin to welcome the Irish dias-pora. We have come through a long and difficult reces-sion but we are coming out the other side and thecommemoration of the Rising is perfectly timed for us tocelebrate our renewed hopes and expectations for the fu-ture.”

Local News story goes national as vultures swoop on houses and SMEsA STORY about vul-ture funds first notedby Local News in2014 — following ane x t r a o r d i n a r i l yprophetic UCD lec-ture by ProfessorMorgan Kelly — hasnow gone nationalwith the evictions inTyrrelstown. Moreevictions — this timeon the southside —are expected soon.

Last week, SinnFéin pressed for the

Seanad to be recalledso that urgent actioncould be taken onthe Tyrrelstown evic-tions, and the ac-tions of vulture fundsgenerally.

Interestingly, our2014 story high-lighted the sale ofsmall-business IOUs,not mortgage loans,to US vulture funds. And while the spot-light is now on thesale of mortgages,

Prof Kelly did pointout at the time thatbusinesses indebted-ness and under-water homemortgages wereclosely related:

“What does asmall business dowhen it’s doing well?In Ireland, it investsin property...”

For that reason,Local News now be-lieves that the focusis about to shift: firstthe vultures threat-ened our homes, andthis summer theywill start destroyingour jobs.

Before the elec-tion, Local News vis-ited theheadquarters of allthe large politicalparties with a starkwarning:

That a second,p o s t - Ty r re l s t ow nwave of misery is

about to sweepthrough small andmedium-sized busi-nesses — SMEs —that are up to theirnecks in debt, thanksto mortgages surren-dered to US vulturessuch as CarVal andGoldman Sachs. These SMEs willshed jobs by the tensof thousands unlesstheir debts arefrozen, then resched-uled.

(This is thebutcher, baker andcandlestick-makerwe’re talking about, not the Googles andMicrosofts. Contraryto popular myth,

those smaller outfitsare far bigger em-ployers (in total)than the Americanbehemoths.)

Fine Gael ig-nored our warnings;Fianna Fáil ex-pressed some inter-est, but refused oursuggestion to makeSME debt, re-sched-uling, and relatedjobs concerns, anelection issue.

Only Bríd Smithand AAA/PBPA tookour warning seri-ously, with Sinn Féinrank-and-filers alsoshowing some inter-est in the days afterour story (LOCAL

JOBS THREAT FROMLOAN SELL-ONS,Local News South,March 3 2016) waspublished.

We continue tourge all parties to lis-ten to ProfessorKelly’s lecture (avail-able on YouTube)and to act now — as

the Professor urgesus to — to rearrangeSME debt and avertthe loss of 100,000+jobs that are threat-ened if smaller em-ployers are forcedinto bankruptcy.

• To hear Profes-sor Morgan Kelly’s2014 lecture, go to

Michael Mallin is one of the lesser known leaders of the 1916 Rising. The Thomas St Pharmacy and NCAD ran acompetition to raise awareness of Michael Mallin and to signify the Liberties' connections with the 1916 Rising. FinnMullan, Hayley Carr and Dan Eames' were the winners and their work can be seen in the pharmacy window for thenext 6 weeks. Michael Mallin was born and lived in the Liberties for much of his life. For his role as leader of therebel garrison in St Stephen's Green (and then later the Royal College of Surgeons), he was one of the 14 menexecuted by firing squad in Kilmainham Goal. This local hero who gave his life for Irish freedom is one of the lesswell known figures of the Rising.

Focus say Govt has the power to take action for families becoming homelessFOCUS Ireland saidthat the finding inthe Children RightsAlliance annualscore card that ‘Childand youth homeless-ness’ has now be-come the worstperforming aspect ofGovernment policyis timely confirma-tion of what thehousing and home-less charity has beenreporting about fromits front line servicesfor over two years.

The latest officialfigures show thatthere were 884 fami-lies in emergencyhomeless accommo-dation in Ireland inJanuary, with a totalof 1,830 children. The number of fami-lies that became

newly homeless inJanuary and pre-sented to Focus Ire-land family servicesin Dublin alone was125.

Focus Ireland Di-rector of AdvocacyMike Allen said: “Focus Irelandwarned the Govern-ment three years agothat unless urgentaction was taken onRent levels, inade-quate rent supple-ment payments anda rising risk of repos-sessions that therewould be a familyhomeless crisis. “

“Two years ago(May 2014) thenMinister for Housingand Homelessness,Jan O’Sullivan de-scribed the problem

as an ‘emergency cri-sis’. Now Focus Ire-land is seeing 2,3 andsometimes even 4families who arenewly homelesscoming to our familyservices every day inDublin which showsthe consequences oftotally inadequateresponse by the Gov-ernment to thisdeepening crisis.’’

Focus Irelandnoted that there hadbeen significantmoves by the DublinRegion Homeless Ex-ecutive to improvethe quality and secu-rity of emergencyfamily accommoda-tion in Dublin in re-cent months. Longerterm contracts havebeen taken with

some hotels and theFocus Ireland FamilyTeam has been in-creased with caseworkers now to bebased on site wherethey are more avail-able with the fami-lies.

Focus Ireland isnow supportingmore and more fam-ilies out of homeless-ness each month.

Mr. Allen said:“While the numberof families becominghomeless continuesto grow every dayone third of thehomeless budget iscurrently going di-rectly to pay for ho-tels and B&Bs while‘vulture funds’ andour own banks actwith impunity within

the law to actuallytake actions that aredriving families andindividuals out oftheir homes andsome into homeless-ness.”

He said: “Theplight of over 60 fam-ilies in Tyrellstownwho face evictionfrom profiteering‘vulture funds’ isonly unique becausethere are so manyfamilies in one place. This sort of evictionis happening everyday and was one ofthe key issues whichFocus Ireland raisedwith the Taoiseach attheir meeting on Fri-day 4th March.

It’s not enoughfor this Governmentand the next Govern-

ment to say theywant to tackle home-lessness andnamecheck it as apriority. They have totake the actions re-quired to do this areal priority.

The caretakergovernment has thepower to take urgentaction in the Dail

next week to alterlegislation so that thelandlords desire tosell a property is nolonger a valid groundfor eviction. Legisla-tion to this effectcould be brought be-fore the Oireachtas atits next sitting. This isthe type of actionthat would keep fam-

ilies in their homes. Will the Govt - and allelected to the Dail –take this opportunityto step up the plateand move beyondsound byte re-sponses such as no-body wants to see1600 children home-less?”

The free publica-tion, which comprises266 pages of helpfulhints, tips, articles andlocal directories forolder people and car-ers, is now available

“While we live in adigital world, there’snothing better thanhaving a book at handwhich covers so muchfrom a directory oflocal services to adviceon finance, legal mat-ters, home security, homecare and evenrecipes from the FoodFor The Soul cook-book. Practical infor-mation in one place isinvaluable for olderpeople and carers. I’m

in the business ofcommunications so Ican understand whythis book is so popu-lar,” says MaryKennedy.

The handbookalso contains a com-prehensive county-by-county directory ofhospitals, local au-thorities, supportgroups, charities andstate agencies as wellas expert articles onmatters from wills toinvesting money, car-ing for a loved one andstaying fit and healthyin older age.

Eddie O’Toole,Operations Directorwith Bluebird Caresays their 20 officesnationwide had awaiting list of peopleand organisations that

ordered copies of thebook before itslaunch.

“The Irish Pen-sioners Handbook ishugely popular andfeedback so far hasbeen extremely posi-tive. We have up-loaded the electronicversion on our websiteso it’s there at thetouch of a button. Wehave printed 20,000copies and we areinviting members ofthe public to call totheir local BluebirdCare office to pick uptheir free copy. The ar-ticles we commis-sioned are based onthe information olderpeople and carers arelooking for from ourstaff, so we decided toask a number of med-ical, financial andhealth experts to con-tribute to it.”

CORRECTION:HOUSINGCHARITYIn our recent cover storyon social housing, we in-advertently gave the im-pression that Cllr TinaMacVeigh or Deputy BrídSmith had seen, andshown us, tender docu-ments relating to suchhousing works. Be yourown lifecoachClinical Hypnotherapist

KIERAN FITZPATRICKadvises in his regular column onhow to achieve your goals.

IN THE LAST issue of Local News, I touched onsomething called “modelling” and I didn’tmean shimmying up and down a catwalk! Itrefers to the process of basically copying the ex-perience, actions and behaviour of somebodywho has done, or achieved, something that youwish to do or achieve. It sounds simple and itpretty much is. However, like most things, a lit-tle instruction is always useful.

Now I will give more detail on how to bestmodel somebody. And “detail” is the key. Copysomeone in a vague way and you may miss outon the key thing that separates them from therest.

There are some people who we cannot getto know personally but who have achieved ourgoal in the past. Famous people perhaps. Sofirstly let’s use them as best we can. Write downthe names of at least three of these people andthe qualities or characteristics you think helpedthem achieve what they did. From time to timeit is a very useful exercise to imagine what ad-vice they would give to you in your current sit-uation or imagine what they would do if theywere you. Find out as much as you can aboutthem. Learn from their mistakes. This can saveyou a lot of wasted time and effort.

Then there are people who you know per-sonally or could get to meet and actually speakto. These are great opportunities and not to bewasted. In the last issue I spoke about askingquestions. Now we will look at how to do thismore effectively, in detail. (There’s that wordagain!)

There are five main tips to asking intelligentand precise questions, which should give youthe information you want and need.

The first is to ask for what you want in asmuch detail as you can, both to yourself andothers. Don’t be vague. Can you imagine goingto a shop and asking for “a shirt”? What are thechances of being happy with what you are givenin response?

Secondly, choose carefully whom you ask.You can be as specific as you like about yourshirt in a shoe shop, but they will not be able tohelp you! So ask your specific question of some-one who has the skills, experience or under-standing for example, to be able to be ofassistance to you.

Offer some gain to the person you are ask-ing. Make it attractive to them to help you. Thisdoes not necessarily mean paying them withmoney. If you were asking for money, obviouslythere would have to be something in it for them. But there can be something in it for them inother ways too. Some may simply be flatteredby your interest and admiration. Others may beinterested in sharing in some way in your futuresuccess. You may be helpful to them in someway. Be creative.

Be sure to ask your questions with beliefand confidence. If you can portray this, the per-son you are asking will more likely feel that youare worth helping and are going to succeed.

Lastly, keep asking until you get what youwant. Even doing all the first four things prop-erly, you may not have found the person whocan satisfy your needs. Successful people keepasking, keep trying until they get what theywant.

For the love of the car!RECENTLY, LocalNews ran a competi-tion for tickets for theAXA National ClassicCar Show, and one ofthe winners was PaulTraynor who it turnsout also had a car onshow their. We askedPaul to tell us thestory of the car andwe hope you enjoy hisstory. Reading thisyou be gripped by thelove and care of cars,he enjoys. In the1980’s Renault pro-duced several types ofcar, hatchbacks (5 &11), saloons (9 & 18 &21), coupes (Fuego)and most models hada Turbo in thererange. Only a fewFuego Turbos wereimported into Irelandand very few survivetoday.

This RenaultFuego Turbo is a 1984model and wasbought new by a wellknown Dublin basedJeweller family whoowned three jewelleryshops in Dublin. Theregistration numberMZG 500 was re-served by Smiths thedealership where thecar was bought. It wasfitted with car phone,16 speaker sound sys-tem, it used to have afancy head unit thatwould automaticallyturn up and down thevolume to compen-sate for road noise asthe car went faster.Unfortunately in thelate 1980’s the carwas involved in an ac-cident and the frontleft corner of the car’schassis was damaged,on another occasiona stone got caught be-tween the radiatorand the fan and thefan stopped, thewiring got hot and asmall fire burnt partof the wiring loom. When the car’s chas-sis was repaired in the1980’s the front pas-senger wheel was outof position and thewiring loom was notrepaired correctly. The car was pur-chased by a man fromGalway. He ownedthe car for several

years and in 2010 de-cided to restore thecar. The RenaultFuego and Renault 18both use a lot of thesame parts, floor pan, chassis, engines, gearboxes etc and aRenault 18 Turbo thatI once owned foundits way to Galway sohe cut the damagedchassis from this carand replaced it withthe perfect chassisfrom the Renault 18Turbo using a jig. Hereplaced the dam-aged chassis and wasmaking goodprogress but unfortu-nately his circum-stances changed andhad to sell the car so Ibought the car fromhim in May 2012.

It’s an originalIrish car with only 3owners and has onlycovered 57,000 miles. The car was fitted to avery high standardwith electric windowsand mirrors, centrallocking, radio cas-sette stereo and an af-termarket sunroofwas added to the car.An original service /sales sheet has sur-vived.

During therestoration I replaced

the wiring loom withan upgraded wiringloom which meansthat the car is now fit-ted with a trip com-puter. The engine wasover hauled, sumpwas removed and theoil pump gauze wascleaned, syntheticengine oil was used, the gearbox wasdrained and replacedwith new gearbox oiland a new three piececlutch kit fitted, oil, air, fuel filter, fan beltswere all replaced andthe carburettor hasbeen cleaned and re-jetted. The alternatorand starter motorwere reconditioned. All the metal brakepipes have been up-graded and replacedwith copper pipes, new brake flexi pipes

wheels were fully re-furbished and nowwrapped with a newset of Kumo185x65x14 tyres. Thecar was painted in itsoriginal black colourcode Renault 654 andnew side Turbo decalsand rear windowdecal were printedand fitted. I fitted aperiod Kenwood KRC700L Radio Cassette

Receiver / Playeralong with a Ken-wood KAC 8200 Am-plifier, I have theoriginal invoices, manuals and boxesfor these. The twofront seat originalcovers were removedand the foam was re-placed, then the orig-inal seat cover was refitted along with newhead cloth.

have been replacedand all the metalpetrol pipes havebeen replaced withnew rubber petrolhoses. Front wheelbearing, front discand brake pads werefitted, a new set ofrear brake pads werefitted to the rear cal-lipers which were re-conditioned. A newhandbrake cable wasalso fitted. Manyother parts were ei-ther replaced or re-furbished. The insideof the petrol tank hasbeen treated so itshould never rust orleak again. A new cus-tom made stainlesssteel exhaust systemwas fabricated fromthe turbo charger tothe tail pipe and itsounds great. Coppergrease was used tothe majority of nutand bolts during therestoration and thefloor inside and theunderneath of the caris all undersealed. The original alloy

Enjoying a great night out at Cleary’s Pub 21st Birthday Celebrations at the Transport Club

There was great party celebrations in the Village Inn Crumlin recently. Larry O’Shea, fam-ily and staff were celebrating with customers and friends the birthday of 25 years at thehelm in the Village Inn. Many of the opus in the area have closed or changed ownershipmany times in the period. It is a reflection on the good staff, management and service thathas this fine pub doing so well. There were presentations to Larry and family to mark theoccasion. Also pictured are Brendan and Amy, both of whom have worked in the Village Innfor many years. There was also a presentation to Brendan in recognition of his years serv-ice.
