The advent of low-cost sequencing of the human genome will revolutionize our understanding of health and disease. Personalized medicine seeks to use genetic variation to develop new diagnostic tests and treatments and to identify the sub-groups of patients for whom they will work best. Personalized medicine can also help determine which groups of patients are more prone to developing some diseases and, ideally, help with the selection of lifestyle changes and/or treat-ments that can delay onset of disease or reduce its impact. Personalized medicine is poised to transform healthcare over the next several de-cades, offering the possibility of improved health outcomes and making healthcare more cost-effective. With the price of sequencing a complete genome falling into the $1,000 range, stunning advances are sure to come over the next few years. It is likely that a detailed genome se-quence will soon be part of a routine medical history, allowing unprec-edented precision in diagnosis and treatment. The DNA and RNA signa-tures of both complex, common diseases and rare, elusive conditions will yield their secrets. This year, our conference focuses on the amazing technological challenges and advances of “next-generation sequenc-ing,” examining the very latest approaches and how they are leading to profound changes in our understanding of basic biological questions and more efficacious and cost effective therapies. Come witness the latest in transformational personalized medicine technologies.

Personalized Medicine at San Francisco State UniversityA star-studded cast of biotechnology, investment, academic, diagnostic, and nonprofit and corporate research leaders share their perspectives on how the evolving landscape of Personalized Medicine is changing medical care and preventive medicine.

Hosted by the Department of Biology, the conference drew more than 140 scientists, health professionals, educators, journalists, alumni and students for each of the past five years.
