South Shore Arts proudly announces that we once againhave a matching fund campaign to increase and enhance oureverykid program! Every dollar you donate will be matchedby an anonymous donor. Thanks to individuals and business-es who contributed to a similar campaign last year, SouthShore Arts raised $72,309, all of which was matched by ourdonor! This funding allowed South Shore Arts to reach near-ly 17,000 children and their families and expand several ofour most successful programs, even in these times of finan-cial insecurity. This year our donor has increased the challenge and will match up to $100,000 of money con-tributed by you!

Arts education has been proven to be critical in a child’slearning and development. First Lady Michelle Obama recog-nizes the need. “My husband and I believe strongly that artseducation is essential for building innovative thinkers whowill be our nation’s leaders for tomorrow,” she says. “It’s ourhope that we can all work together to expose, enrich, andempower Americans of all ages through the arts.”

The South Shore Arts everykid program is an extensiveseries of on-going arts education partnerships with schools, social service agencies and parks and recreation depart-ments throughout Lake and Porter counties and south sub-urban Chicago. Thanks to the on-going support of our anony-mous donor, the Legacy Foundation and Porter CountyCommunity Foundation—along with a host of individual andcorporate donors—South Shore Arts and its partners canoffer these programs to participants at no cost.

The Polar Express program, for instance, based on ChrisVan Allsburg’s beautifully illustrated children’s book, bringschildren’s literature to life. Using shapes to construct a polarlandscape and train, students follow step-by-step instruc-tions to complete an art project. The project meets IndianaStandards in Visual Arts, Language Arts and Math. A copy of the book, provided to each classroom, allowsteachers to reinforce the connections made between art-making and reading.

Polar Express originated as a collaboration betweenSouth Shore Arts and the School City of Hammond in 2003and has since served over 8,000 pajama-clad students atSubstation No. 9. Last year, the program was expanded toEast Chicago, where it was conducted in school classrooms. This year, with additional match money, another 5,000 students will experience Polar Express in Portage, Gary,

art that makes cents

Our goal is $100,000!

Right now, your tax-deductible donation tothe everykid programwill be DOUBLED. $10is $20, $25 is $50,and $50 is $100!

South Shore Arts has agenerous donor who, fora short time, will matchany gift that you maketo the everykid program. We need your support to grow this programespecially in these tough economic times. Last year we served over 17,000 kids in oureverykid programs.

Making Memories in Hammond

Merrillville and Lake Station, in addition to Hammond andEast Chicago!

Making Memories–A Family Enrichment Program, the first region-wide collaborative among multiple artsorganizations in local libraries, also continues to grow withexpansion into more communities. Making Memories bringsfamilies together through reading and the arts: bookmaking, writing, music, poetry, visual art and drama. Other arts organizations participating in the program are Books, Brushes and Bands for Education, Hammond; the SouthShore Chamber Orchestra, Valparaiso; and the Towle Theater, Hammond.

The program is designed for families with students ingrades two through six. Feedback from the participants indi-cates that they value the quality time spent together, andare deeply impacted by the experience as they increase theirappreciation for the arts. Each program location hosts tenfamilies who participate at no cost, and each sessionincludes a meal to give participants a chance to sit downand spend time together. Five books are featured and a copyof each is given to the families to keep. If you know a familywho could benefit from such an experience, contact South

Shore Arts at 219/836-1839, ext. 101. Quoting again the First Lady, “The truth is that even

though many kids are living just minutes away from the centers of culture and power and prestige, many of themfeel like these resources are really miles away, very farbeyond their reach.”

South Shore Arts is dedicated to bringing quality programming to children and families along the South Shore, enriching their lives by making the arts more accessible. Thank you for recognizing the value of the arts for our youth and for continuing to support the everykid program.

To donate to the South Shore Arts everykid program, please visit our web site at www.southshoreartsonline.org or call 219/836-1839, ext. 107.

Top Ten Things You Can Do to KeepArt and Music Alive in Perpetuity

Prepare a will. Fully 50% of Americans die without a will.Without one, you lose control of the assets you worked alifetime to acquire.

Leave gifts in your will for charitable organizations likeSouth Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony thathave made a difference in your life. Imagine the positive impact in our community ifeveryone made even a modest donation to a favorite non-profit organization.

Leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of yourestate to South Shore Arts or the Northwest IndianaSymphony. The provision can be part of a new will or addedto your existing will as a codicil.

“Endow” your annual gift by making a bequest equal to 20times that amount.

Name South Shore Arts or the Northwest Indiana Symphonyas the beneficiary of your IRA or pension plan.

Make a Difference in the Lives that Follow:Keep Art and Music Alive in PerpetuityMore than sixty percent of people contribute to non-profit organizations duringtheir lifetimes, while less than ten percent continue that contribution in perpetuity through a planned gift. Making a lasting contribution to charitableorganizations like South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony isn’tjust for the wealthy. Every day, people from all walks of life leave charitable giftsin their wills. In doing so, they make a tremendous difference in the world theyleave behind. All it takes is a legal will and the good will or simple codicil to your will to make important charitable work live on forever.
