South Sudan– A Nurse’s view from Uganda
Wednesday 9 July 2014:As the nascent nation of South Sudan celebrates its third anniversary, its people are confronting a series of life-threatening hardships: from the ongoing conflict in the north with Sudan; to disease; malnutrition; and mass displacement.
Emily Gerardo, a graduate of Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA, is a registered nurse working in Uganda with the international medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Thousands of South Sudanese refugees are fleeing the fighting in their country and are making their way across the border to neighbouring Uganda. There they find refuge in camps run by MSF and with dedicated and compassionate local staff and international doctors, such as Emily.
In the course of her work caring for the medical needs of those in the camps, Emily has turned to her love of photography to express herself. The following is a selection of her images made between March and June this year.
Emily’s photographs offer us an inside look – a compassionate view – of the people she has dedicated herself to helping. The images are outstanding both in their photographic quality and emotional intensity. They provide a picture of camp life, but most of all they provide a window into the plight of South Sudan itself, at this happy and unhappy moment in it’s brief history.
