3.15pm in the Student Services Centre. Teachers are available to assist with course work, study preparation

and past papers. Students do not have to attend each week, but remember it is an ideal opportunity to have a

Under the theme – Voice, Treaty, Truth! - NAIDOC Week 2019 will be held nationally from Sunday 7th July

and continue through to Sunday 14th July, during the July school holidays. NADIOC week celebrates the

history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our assembly will be held

Gerric July Holiday Workshops

The July holidays afford high aptitude students a wonderful opportunity to engage in challenging and

stimulating workshops, run by the University of New South Wales, from 9th - 11th July. This school holidays

the workshops will be held at Matraville High School. We will share details of these workshops as soon as they

are announced by GERRIC. Parents who would like their child to avail of these workshops but would find the

SSCIM Club

Public speaking is proving to be a strong focus for those who come to SSCIM Club on a Thursday, at lunchtime.

It looks like we will have the wonderful problem of many capable junior public speakers to choose from, when

looking for two students to represent the school at this year’s Legacy Interschool Public Speaking Competition,

to be held in early Term 3. It was wonderful to have our new school Principal Ms Neilsen visit SSCIM Club on

Thursday 30th May. We look forward to inviting her to many SSCIM initiatives over the coming year. Over

these cold months, the Drama Room is opening its doors early on a Friday from 8.15am to anyone who would

like to avail of early morning SSCIM activities, such as, a game of chess in a warm friendly place.

Year 5 SSEP

The Year 5 SSEP Orientation day was held on Wednesday 29th May. Ms Neilsen, our school Principal

welcomed the parents & students and accompanied them on a tour of the school that was conducted by our

school prefects. Many thanks to Dobbin, Nikki and Lilou for their help with greeting parents and students as

they arrived at South Sydney High School and for running the tours of our school. Following Morning Tea, the

students undertook lots of ‘getting to know you’ and team building challenges in the Drama Room. They also

learnt about their preferred thinking and learning styles. It is wonderful to see so many siblings of students in

our enrichment stream attending our school for the Year 5 SSEP program this year.

As Year 8 Yellow winds up their study of Medieval History, they thought a trial would be the way to go! So with

Barnaby as the judge and Erin in the docks we role-played a trial with a jury. The verdict? Medieval History at

South Sydney High School is awesome! Erin however, for her crime of nagging, was to be punished in the

stocks!

Year 8 Yellow & Mrs Helen Stell

Year 7 students are currently studying classification and recently dissected fish to observe characteristics of

this animal group. Year 7 students are also currently growing crystals to enter the annual NSW Crystal Growing

Competition. They have been growing the alum crystals for about 6 weeks and will soon send them away to

be judged. We wish them luck!

Several Year 11 and 12 classes are starting, or have started, their Depth Studies and will have a chance to carry

out an investigation into an area in which they have an interest.

Year 12 Biology students are visiting the Museum of Human Disease at UNSW in Week 6, as a part of the

infectious disease module they are currently studying.

We wish all the Year 7-10 students well in their Half Yearly Exams.

Frederick’s Swimming Success Continues…. It seems a long time since the school, zone and regional swimming carnivals where Frederick Mravec (Year 7)

left all in his wake, including some very long-standing records along the way. His endeavours began at the end

Combined High School’s State Carnival (NSW Public High School’s) and he also represented South Sydney High

School as part of NSWCHS team at the NSW All-School’s Carnival (All NSW High School’s); both held at Sydney

Olympic Aquatic Centre.

With thanks to Frederick’s mother Viktoria for providing us with all of his results, below is a summary of his

achievements at these two carnivals.

Day 1 – Bronze medal 200m Freestyle

Day 2 – Gold 100m Breaststroke and 7th 50m Freestyle

Well done Fredo!!

June P&C meeting

Our next P&C meeting is being held on Tuesday 11th June. We meet in the Staff Common Room at 7pm (entry

is via the courtyard gates to the rear of the hall). All are welcome.

Second-hand uniform shop

The second-hand uniform shop is open every Friday from 2.45pm - 3.15pm. We are looking for donations of

(clean, good quality) winter jackets and jumpers as we are very short on these and it’s getting decidedly chilly.

These can be dropped off to the second-hand uniform shop directly, or to the front office.

ANZAC Indigenous Commemoration Service

On Friday 31st May, South Sydney High School’s Aboriginal students attended a prestigious ceremony for the

ANZAC Indigenous Commemoration Service held at Hyde Park as part of National Reconciliation Week.

Our students laid a wreath in respect of the Indigenous men and women who represented Australia in Service

and Wartime.

Our student’s behaviour and attitude on the day was impeccable. We are very proud of them. Our student

you do not book you may not be able to attend, as we generally have more people wishing to see our senior

students (Years 9 -12) presenting their work in Drama, Music and Visual Arts than we can accommodate in our

school hall.
