Background information Regional Academies of Sport in NSW were largely formed by the Department of Sport and Recreation, following the initiative of a group of business people in the Illawarra who established the Illawarra Academy of Sport, in 1980.
Academies were developed to provide an environment where talented athletes across NSW could access services to assist in developing local talent without having to leave home and travel to capital cities, such as Sydney.
Today there are 11 NSW Regional Academies of Sport servicing over 2000 athletes annually.
The South West Sydney Academy of Sport was formed in 1997 by the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation and became an autonomous not for profit organisation, in November 2002.
What do we do?
The Academy seeks to maximize each athletes full potential by providing excellence in coaching and education and also provide a pathway for talented athlete to progress through to the NSW Institute of Sport, State, or National Level representation.
Programs are provided ‘mainly off season’ so as not to interfere with athletes wishing to compete in their home competition. Skill, educational and community values are added to an athlete normal training and playing schedule.
Who do we service?
Talented junior athletes who either live within, go to school within, or are registered with a sporting organisation within one of the Local Government areas serviced by the Academy.
The Academy currently provides service to the Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly local government areas in all Academy sports. Athletes range between the ages of 13 and 20 years depending on the structure of the program.
Partners
Each sports program is conducted in partnership with its relevant State Sporting Organisation, or peak sporting body. All programs form a part of the sports NSW athlete pathway and provide athletes a clear understanding of their sporting career progression.
The NSW Government via its Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation Division, is the principal financial partner of each Regional Academy of Sport. The regions four local Councils are Foundation Partners of the Academy and have Board and Sub Committee representation.
These Councils also provide access to sporting facilities for Academy athletes. Campbelltown City Council also provides the Academy administration centre. Corporate partners provide financial support to enable the Academy to operate and grow.

Chairperson Report It is with the utmost pleasure that I, on behalf of the Board of South West Sydney Academy of Sport, present the 20th annual Chairperson Report, for the period July 2016 to June 2017.
The Academy continues to provide scholarship opportunities to its region’s talent identified male and female athletes, between 13 and 19 years of age. And, I am pleased to report, the Academy has again excelled in its provision of high quality sports training and sports related education programs. The Academy has provided a range of new and varied sports development opportunities to its 340 local athletes, its coaching and support staff members and also a large contingent of supportive athlete parents. The inclusion of additional sports programs and maintaining fledgling and long-term programs has been a direct result of the hard work of Academy staff members and it’s coaching and support volunteers. The Academy continues to strengthen its position as the premier sports development organisation in the Macarthur and Liverpool region and is now highly recognised for its good community work across our regions sporting, local community and government landscape.
This type of recognition has been achieved though the hard work of all involved with the Academy.
In 2016/2017 the Academy engaged the services of over 70 highly dedicated volunteers in the roles of coaches, sports trainers, mangers, educators and support staff members.
The Academy continues to deliver ongoing skill and education opportunities to its volunteers through its Coaches Education program. These opportunities are provided with a view of enhancing the development and skills of these wonderful time-generous people. These opportunities have been made available with the assistance of the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE, the NSW Office of Sport - Sport and Recreation, and a range of supportive corporate partners, private education providers. As the Academy’s sports education and community citizenship education provision continues to expand, local education providers such as the University of Western Sydney and the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE remain integral components of the Academy’s education service provision.
These highly accommodating organisations support the Academy with the provision of facilities, equipment, lecturers and Diploma and TVET education course opportunities.
The Regional Academies of Sport NSW (RASi) network has also finalised a substantial corporate partnership with ClubsNSW, which will see the delivery of a wide range of additional exciting education opportunities to athletes and Academy coaching and support staff members, over the next 3 years.
The 2017 Academy Graduation and Sports Awards Dinner was held at Campbelltown Catholic Club’s prestigious, ‘The CUBE’ Convention and Entertainment Centre and once again was an outstanding success, accommodating over 600 guests.
7
The highlight of the evening’s presentations was the very popular announcement of Softball athlete Harrison Pudner, as a most worthy Chairperson Award winner and ‘2016/2017 Academy Athlete of the Year’.
Congratulations also go to three of the Academy’s longstanding coaching staff members Ms. Fiona Ioannou, Mr. Peter Doherty and Mr. Tony Jackson, on the receipt of their 10 year, ‘Outstanding Service Awards’.
The Academy Board continues to measure its success in two ways, the first being sporting achievement and the second being the development of good community citizenship. And, it is most appropriate that I take this opportunity to thank the following organisations and individuals for their continued support of these admirable aspirations. The NSW Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation funding increase during the period demonstrates the Department’s commitment to Regional Academies; and will allow the Academy to continue to grow going forward. The Department remains the Academy’s major funding partner and I thank the NSW Government for its continued support and its excellent provision of various resources to assist the day to day operation of the Academy. The exceptionally positive relationship between the Academy and the Department including the Minister’s Office continues to be strong and productive and we thank all concerned for their personal and professional interest and support of the Academy. The Academy’s relationship with Local Government and its Federal and State Members of Parliament is outstanding and we also thank them for their continued interest and investment in the Academy. This support has again been publically proclaimed within Parliamentary speeches at the Federal and State level, during the past 12 months. On a local government level the Councils of Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly continue to be great contributors, both financially and in the provision of sports facilities and resources to the Academy.
The Campbelltown Catholic Club remains the prominent financial corporate supporter of the Academy in its role as the Academy’s ‘naming rights partner’, and the Academy is proud to be associated with such a community motivated organisation. It is also most appropriate to again thank SOUTH32, Illawarra Coal, for their outstanding ongoing financial support of the South West Sydney Academy of Sport. The Academy is also highly appreciative of the outstanding corporate support provided by Wests Leagues Club, Campbelltown, which allowed the Academy to provide an additional five age group Development Rugby League programs in support of the Wests Magpies and Wests Tigers athlete pathway strategy. The Academy continues to increase its regional and NSW profile in the sporting and corporate sectors and it is most appropriate to thank our new and longstanding corporate partners; we are truly appreciative of your most valued support. Their financial and contra support enables the Academy to increase and add value to its programs and increase development opportunities for its areas aspiring athletes.

To our Council representatives on the Academy Board, Campbelltown Councillor Karen Hunt, Camden Councillor Theresa Fedeli, Liverpool Councillor Charishma Kaliyanda and Wollondilly Councillor Blair Briggs, I thank you for your personal and Council support. To the Board’s University of Western Sydney representative, Professor Gregory Kolt I extend a personal thank you, and I also thank the University of Western Sydney - Campbelltown Campus, for its ongoing provision of facilities. And, to the Academy Board’s Community representatives, Mr Ross Kelly (Deputy Chairperson), Mrs Denise McGrath (Executive Committee), Mrs Michelle Caruso (Executive Committee) and Mr Ross Morrison (Convener Sports Sub Committee), I thank you for your professionalism and valuable input in the strategic direction of the Academy. Executive Director Report
The South West Sydney Academy of Sport continues to consolidate its position, as the region’s leading ‘talented athlete’ development organisation.
The Academy is developing into an organisation providing much more than just sports skill development and sports education. The Academy is now well recognised as an organisation committed to the development of the holistic athlete, a quality community citizen of today and tomorrow.
The Academy has received many accolades and excellent publicity over the past twelve months from numerous quarters, but the most pleasing aspect of the period is how the Academy has again successfully met all of its operational targets.
The Academy currently provides sports development opportunities via its 17 varied sports programs, to 13 individual sports. These programs are supported by 70+ highly dedicated volunteer coaching and support staff members.
The ongoing challenge for its staff members is to service the always changing sports program requirements of so many varied State Sporting Organisations at one time, and within the Academy’s budget and resources.
I am pleased to say this challenge has again been accomplished in an outstanding fashion. With much credit going to our dedicated and hardworking sports program manager Mr. James Watson and sports program and administration coordinator Mrs Elizabeth Callaghan. Their individual support and personal dedication to the Academy has been outstanding.
As stated, the Academy continues to receive praise for its commitment to the development of Australian sport, which this year again included recognition in the Federal and State Houses of Parliament.
The past twelve months have seen over 50 athletes achieve junior NSW representative selection. This is a pleasing achievement considering the overall number (340), of current Academy athletes.
And, I am pleased to report that an exceptionally large number of athletes achieved regional, or similar high level school representation. Another pleasing aspect is the growing list of past athletes representing senior NSW, and junior and senior Australian teams.
Operationally, the NSW Government has increased its financial commitment to Regional Academies’, both individually and via the Academies’ umbrella organisation, the Regional Academies of Sport NSW Inc.
The Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation through its Minister The Hon. Stuart Ayres, also continues to provide quality strategic support to the Academy and meaningful opportunities to further the development of all NSW Regional Academies.
Sporting development organisations such as the New South Wales Institute of Sport and National and State sporting organisations have once again provided clear direction for the development of Academy programs and athlete pathways.
This form of ongoing quality engagement with the Academy’s peak organisations continues to be highly beneficial to all concerned.
10
A sincere thank you again goes to our Academy region’s four local governments namely Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly, for their continued financial and operational support of the vision and operation of the Academy.
These Councils continue to recognise the community value of the Academy in the areas of athlete development, community citizenship development and community engagement.
The Academy was also supported by local government in the provision of high quality sporting venues and facilities; and each Council hosted a mayoral civic reception for athletes, their families and support staff members, from within their local government area.
Campbelltown City Council also continues to provide the Academy’s administration centre building, centrally located on Queen Street, Campbelltown.
The ClubsNSW Academy Games was successfully hosted for the third and final year at various venues across the Central Coast and Wyong regions, by the Central Coast Academy of Sport.
This highly successful multi-sport event attracted over 1,000 athletes, coaches and team officials representing nine Academies across eight sports, an increase of two sports from the previous year.
Similar to past years, the Academy heavily supported the sports program preparation and operation of the Games, and also competed in six of the available sports.
In doing so I am proud to report the Academy was represented by 98 athletes and 16 officials, one of the largest participating Academies overall.
The Academy has continued to expand its athlete and coaching staff ‘sport and skill development’ education, with the support of a wide range of service and venue providers. Education sessions were provided at the University of Western Sydney - Campbelltown Campus, the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE - Macquarie Fields Campus, plus a wide range of various sporting venues across the Academy region. ClubsNSW has also committed to financially supporting the development of a suite of sports education resources, specifically designed for Regional Academies and to be developed and rolled out over the next 3 years.
One of the sports program highlights of the year was the increased number of rugby league programs provided by the Academy. These programs were instigated in support of the Western Suburbs District Junior Rugby League, the Wests Magpies senior club and the Wests Tigers NRL. This was a major undertaking by the Academy and increased the overall number of Academy rugby league athletes to 105, with programs ranging from U13 to U17 years of age. The Wests Leagues Club Campbelltown is to be congratulated for financially supporting these programs as a new Academy corporate partner. The Academy’s event highlight of the year was the exceptionally well attended 2017 Graduation and Sports Awards Dinner. As in 2016, five Academy athletes were considered outstanding in their own right, whilst acting as emcees during the evening.
And the hotly contested South West Sydney Academy of Sport ‘Athlete of the Year’ - Chairperson’s Award’ was appropriately presented to U19 Australian Softball representative Harrison Pudner.
Harrison was selected from an outstanding field of nominations; with a number of worthy Academy athletes demonstrating all the skills and attributes to be equally successful in their own right.
11
A sincere thank you must go to all Academy corporate partners, state and local sporting organisations and contra supporters, who have provided financial and or practical support to the Academy, during the past 12 months.
In this regard a special thank you must go to Campbelltown Catholic Club and SOUTH32 – Illawarra Coal for financially recommitting to the Academy. And I am pleased to announce that the Ingleburn RSL Sub-Branch Club will be joining the Academy as a Gold Medal partner, for the 2017/2018 Academy intake year.
The Academy continues to thrive under professional direction of its Board of Management and the guidance of its Executive Committee. The quality of support provided by the Board, its Executive team and the Academy’s Sports Sub Committee members is to be commended.
A special personal thank-you goes to Academy Chairperson Mr. Peter Campbell, Deputy Chairperson Mr. Ross Kelly and Sport Sub Committee Convener Mr. Ross Morrison, for their praiseworthy guidance and support during the period.
It is time to now turn our thoughts to welcoming our next intake of talented young athletes and coaching and support staff members to the Academy family.
A task I look forward to with excitement and anticipation.
May I conclude by again thanking all associated with the Academy for their individual and collective support during the past twelve months. And, I look forward to continuing to work with you all, as the Academy continues its development as an integral component of our region’s overall progress.
Thank you.

SPORTS EDUCATION
Sports education and sports specific skill development remain the cornerstones of athlete development, for the South West Sydney Academy of Sport. Athletes undertake a selection of core and elective sports career related subjects, in lecture based and practical situations. These educational programs operate in conjunction with the athletes identified skill-based development program. Discussions are held between the Academy’s Executive Director, Sports Program Manager, each sporting program’s Head Coach and appropriate support staff members prior to the commencement of the squad season, to best plan the required skill development and elective education package for each sport. Each program incorporates a series of core educational subjects and three elective subjects chosen in consultation with the sports Head Coach and Manager. The Academy has taken a unique approach to sports education assessment, with a number of subjects containing minor assessment tasks, for athletes to complete. Core subjects include: sports psychology, sports counseling, media awareness and practical training, public speaking, drugs in sport awareness, orientation to coaching and sports science testing. Elective subjects include: sports nutrition, strapping, injury prevention and care, core strength and flexibility, recovery, officiating, elite match reviews and additional subjects deemed appropriate for the age and sport A further core component of an athlete’s sports education program is sports specific skills training, which is developed and implemented by the respective sports head coach, in conjunction with requirements of the sports state sporting organisation. Each sport has the opportunity to demonstrate the skills gained through participation in competitions such as NSW competition and Inter-Academy competition. The Academy is continually exploring sports education options and opportunities with internal and external educational service providers, with a view to continue to value-add to the Academy athlete education program.
15
COMMUNITY PROJECTS Coaches Education Program
The Academy has initiated a Coach Education program, focused on providing additional coaching qualifications and network support to coaches within the Academy’s region. The opportunity to gain additional coaching related qualifications has continued to assist in the development of regional based coaches during 2016/2017. The program has provided coaches and support staff members the opportunity to complete a Level 2 General Principle’s coaching certification, or Sports Trainer accreditation or, First Aid Level I or II, or equivalent accreditation. The Academy continues to provide articles, resources and education course opportunities for Academy coaches, which have been well received by coaching staff members. Coaching lectures in basic and advanced sports taping, sports psychology and core strength and flexibility have also been provided in addition to the coaches’ participation in the athlete education program.
Athlete Parent Education
The Academy has introduced an ‘Athlete Parent’s Education’ program, where parents of current athletes can participate in education sessions such as Drugs in Sport, Nutrition and Sports Massage.
South West Sydney Institute of TAFE The South West Sydney Institute of TAFE also offers a Certificate IV in Fitness or any related subject annually, to an Academy coach, support staff member, or scholarship holder, as part of the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE corporate partnership education program.
University of Western Sydney
The University of Western Sydney, Campbelltown Campus continues to provide lecture theatre and class room opportunities to assist in the provision of education services. 1. The development of quality Academy athlete fitness data. 2. Provided coaches and sports trainers additional practical development opportunities. 3. Increased coaches’ knowledge and ability to deliver quality and up-to-date training
programs. 4. And, provide a platform for coaches to share knowledge and experiences.
Community
The Academy also makes available the use of fitness testing equipment and fitness testing opportunities locally, where and when deemed appropriate.
