We welcome Andrea Campkin to our school and community, who is filling in for Addie while she is on maternity leave for the year. Andrea will be teaching across the school in the junior and senior areas. If you see her around school or the community please make her feel welcome. Our congratulations go to Addie and Kip on the arrival of Charlie Grace Nolan during the school holidays. We wish you all the best. I had the pleasure of taking six students (Caitlin Cunniffe, Kate Greig, Greta Manera-Wilson, Ruby Arnold, Cameron Mathieson and Sean McGuigan) to National Trials at Murchison last Sunday and Monday. All six made a phenomenal effort and were a credit to our school. Congratulations go to Cameron Mathieson, Meg Glancy, Greta Manera-Wilson and Sean McGuigan, all who were selected for the National Tournament in Rotorua during July. Thanks go to Mr Kelynack who accompanied us the trip. Thanks also goes to Miss Fox who took five students over the holidays to the NZ Area Schools Leadership camp in Christchurch. All the students had a very enjoyable time and contributed to the success of the event. They shared their experiences with the rest of the school during Assembly this week. Our ERO visit at the end of Term 1 was an excellent opportunity for us to portray all the positive aspects of South Westland Area School. The visiting team of inspectors were impressed with our well-run and organised school, really appreciated the warm welcome given by the students and reflected to the Board of Trustees and Senior Management on the positive behaviour and attitude of our learners throughout their visit. We are hoping for a report that illustrates our school as the learning environment we are trying to establish; this should be published in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, the builders are making steady progress with the improvements programme in Block E and Room 13. NCEA students will be busily collecting their credits over this term and I suggest that they all stay abreast of where they stand in terms of their Level accreditation, particularly if they are looking for subject or course endorsements. Looking to dates on the calendar in the next few weeks, we have two cross-country events for the Junior School – one is in Ross on 21 st May and the other in Whatoroa on 24 th May. We also have the magician Elgregoe visiting on 6 th June and all parents and pre-schoolers are welcome to join us for this performance. Finally, please make a note of the date for our Student-Led Conferences which are on June 26th, later this term. I look forward to meeting up with you all at some stage during the term. WELCOME TO ANDREA Hello to the school community and the town community. My name is Mrs Andrea Campkin, the children call me Whaea Andrea. What a lovely warm friendly welcome I have received from you all. I have been working in the North Island with the Life Education Trust. I thought it was time to move back to the coast so here I am and I am very happy so far. My husband is looking forward to visiting in the near future. It has been a great week here at SWAS so far and I am enjoying meeting all the lovely students.

NATIONALS TRIALS Congratulations to Meg Glancy, Cameron Mathieson, Sean McGuigan and Greta Manera-Wilson in being selected for the Nationals in Rotorua in the first week of the July school holidays. These students have worked very hard to get to where they are and we wish them all the best in July.

SOCCER TOURNAMENT 2019 On Thursday 28th March SWAS had a Soccer Tournament. SWAS played against Amuri Area School. Austin scored a goal and Shadyne scored a goal and I nearly scored a goal for SWAS. At the end of the first half Amuri scored four goals and then it was half-time. The score at half-time was 4-0. The second half started and went for 45 minutes. When Sean McGuigan did the corner kick my teammates were on the side cheering for me. Sean kicked the ball from the corner, the ball curved and one of the Amuri kids got the ball and started to run down the field. Cameron and I were chasing after the Amuri players. When I had the ball I got the ball past one of the Amuri kids and I tried to get the ball past another Amuri kid but they just got the ball off me and went down the field. I swapped with someone on my team. When I was on the sideline beside Mr. Kelynack I started to cheer for SWAS and then the SWAS kids nearly scored a goal. The Amuri Goalie blocked the kick and passed the ball to one of their teammates, they started to go down the field with the ball. After that I went back onto the field and when I was by the Amuri goal, Sean did another corner kick. Another Amuri kid blocked it and went down the field with the ball. Cameron and I were chasing down the field really fast and nearly got the ball off the Amuri players. Most of the SWAS player’s positions were attack, defence and midfield. Then the game was over. It was 3-6. Amuri won the Soccer Tournament. We shook Amuri’s hands and congratulated them.

SURPRISE FOR THE CHILDREN OF SWAS The children of SWAS had a nice surprise at school for their first day back after the holidays. Thanks to Karyn Mathieson and her fundraising efforts, the children now have a springless trampoline to play on at morning tea and lunch time. The trampoline is capable of taking adults so the senior students can also enjoy the new play equipment. Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets over the past few weeks/months and supported the purchase of the trampoline. The children are getting a lot of enjoyment out of this.

SOUTH WESTLAND BASKETBALL Just a reminder that basketball has started this week. Years 1-4 / 3.15pm, Years 5-8 / 3.45pm, Seniors/Adults /

4.30pm finishing by 5.30pm. Subs are $10 per player and thank you to those who have paid already. Any queries please call Karyn on 7533160 or 7533376. If your child is staying after school and is a bus student, please let the school know. If the school does not hear from you, your child will be sent home on their bus.

LIBRARY NEWS Congratulations to everyone who entered the colouring competition last term. We had some fantastic art work handed in as you can see by the photo below. All entries went into a hat and the winning entry was Pixie Manera-Maguire and she received an Easter basket. Well done, Pixie!

Matthew Rielly is a well known author. He was not always a big fan of reading. It was only after he read To Kill a Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies in Year 10 that he realised reading could transport you to another world. We seek feedback on what resources our library users would like, to encourage reading for enjoyment. Next week a library survey will be going out to students and staff to help with our school collection plan for 2019. If the community would like to take part in the library survey, or have suggestions to improving our school Library/Community Library, please contact me at [email protected] for information.

SOUTH WESTLAND AREA SCHOOL TOURNAMENT South Westland Area School students competed recently in the Top of the South Island Area Schools tournament at Collingwood. They tested their mettle in a variety of traditional sports as well as enjoying cultural activities. Every year, seven area schools from the Top of the South Island meet for a week of sport’s competition and cultural activities.

This year it was Collingwood’s turn to host. Each school brings 10 boys and 10 girls from their senior school (Years 9-13) who are then billeted in the community.

Students participate in a wide range of sports and activities from touch, basketball, netball, rugby and triathlons as well as cooking and art challenges, over the course of four days.

The final standings were: Collingwood 1, Murchison 2, South Westland 3, Tapawera 4, Reefton 5, Karamea 6, Rai Valley 7.

From these events students can get selected to go to trials at Murchison Area School ready for the National Area Schools Tournament.

This year the tournament is in the North Island and students selected for the National Area Schools teams will be travelling to Rotorua in the July school holidays.

South Westland Area School had 10 students who made the trials at Amuri this year: Cameron Mathieson (Touch, volleyball, ki-o-rahi, rugby), Sean McGuigan (ki-o-rahi, volleyball, touch, basketball, football), Meg Glancy (football, touch, basketball, volleyball, ki-o-rahi, netball), Kate Greig (netball), Ruby Arnold (netball), Greta Manera-Wilson (netball, ki-o-rahi, basketball, touch), John Brake (basketball, football), Alex Maisey (basketball), Caitlin Cunniffe (basketball, volleyball), Aniwa Waiomio (ki-o-rahi).

Thanks go to all the schools, students and helpers for an enjoyable time with a special thank you to staff at SWAS for all their hard work preparing and organising for the tournament and to Sarah Blackburn and Lisa Greig for their help in making the trip such a success.

SWAS and Community Creative Writing Challenge

The ‘Think KIND’ competition

is currently running all across New Zealand,

so SWAS and its community are being

challenged this term

to one idea from that competition:

writing literature that conveys kindness to animals.

Your writing may be in the form of a

poem, a short story, or an essay

(no longer than 1000 words).

Young children (Room 1 and younger) may convey

their kindness to animals idea with artwork.

This opportunity is open to everyone

in the SWAS community:

students, staff, board, families, and neighbours.

Write alone or write together.

Have fun, be creative, share a story, or voice a concern.

Get your contributions to this challenge in

to Mrs Haugen by Friday, 14 June.

Send it with a student, drop it off at the school office,

or email it to Mrs Haugen at [email protected].

DRAMA ASSESSMENT FUN The Year 7/8 and Year 10 Drama classes proved assessments can be fun. Both groups ended Term 1 with a Dramatic Shared Lunch which assessed the skills they learned and developed throughout Term 1 lessons and activities.

Each Drama student had to create a character to attend the shared lunch as and was assessed on the criteria of costume, body movement, gestures, facial expressions, and voice. As a bonus, students brought food items to share that went along with their characters.

Those in attendance ranged from a fairy, a witch, and a model to a gorilla, a cat, and a bear to a hippie, a bride and a soldier. We even had special appearances from Donald Trump, Harry Potter, Moana, Santa, Indiana Jones, and our own school secretary Karyn Mathieson.

This term, Drama students will learn about the comedic art of slapstick as they look at its history, techniques, and various slapstick artists, both past and modern. Maybe we have a Laurel and Hardy, Jim Carey, a Lucille Ball or one of the Three Stooges in our midst. One thing’s for certain: we’ll have fun finding out!

YEAR 3 & 4 TECHNOLOGY CLASS Students in Year 3&4 Technology class have worked hard in the school garden throughout Term 1, and last week they reaped the reward of their endeavours: a shared lunch using produce from the garden. On the menu was home-made tomato soup using tomatoes from the tunnel house and a bit of celery, too, new potatoes, all hot and buttery, and as a treat they made banana smoothies with ice-cream! Students also got to taste-test celery with peanut butter and fresh broccoli with hummus dip. Some students were very pleasantly surprised that they actually did like celery after all. They also got to take home a vegetable package of kale, spinach and silverbeet, though some did comment that their veggies ‘died’ on the way home and they couldn’t eat them. Good news is there are still potatoes growing and they will look forward to seeing if the spuds are bigger and more plentiful in a month or two. A huge THANK YOU to Tommy Arnold for kindly giving us a scoop of metal for the tunnel house. Now we don’t have to walk in the squelchy mud when we want to weed the garden and pick the vegetables.
