“Faith and Forgiveness” named not only the theme for our Spring Gathering, but also the ac-tions of the planning team of women and Pastor Tim Bettger! This event was carefully scheduled and coordinated to occur on 4/16/16 at a prime venue. This was accomplished in spite of Yvonne losing her beloved mate and Donna having emergency sur-

gery in the midst of planning! Yet, the event was to go on until the weather predictions prior for this date included major snow storm warnings

throughout the region. Faith

moved the team to reschedule this to an alternate Saturday in May and get it announced before our sisters needed

to travel from outer parts in compromising weath-

er. The forgiveness came

from the many ladies who had planned to attend in April, but were unable to reschedule to the new date! The goals remained the same—to experi-ence a day of fellowship, fun, relaxation and re-

newal and to learn more about forgiveness. Both of these worthy goals were accomplished and felt by the group who did gather at First Lutheran Church, Colorado Springs that Saturday!Linda Slothower, mistress of ceremonies, led us through the day with enthusiasm and joy. She helped us feel like Queens for a Day and Won-

der Women of God’s calling! She taught us that Forgiveness is necessary for all people because everyone messes up sometimes. But forgiveness is in word; harder in deed (especially for our-

selves!). Our Father God gives forgiveness with-

out any expectations of something in return, He is our example. The science of forgiveness has proven many health benefits to back up Christ’s example of forgiveness.

Pastor Tim provided 3 parts of a devotion that cen-

tered on Luke 15, the parable commonly known as the Prodigal Son. This was intertwined with Henri Nouwen’s book, The Return of the Prodigal Son based on Henri’s spiritual journey which had been inspired by a reproduction of Rembrandt’s

masterpiece of

the same name.

Tim broke it

down for us as

we had this beau-

tiful painting be-

fore us. God gives us the power to

forgive and He

delights in the “lost being found.” The point of confession and forgiveness is not that we need to

feel awful about our sinful selves, but to give us the chance to HEAR the words that we are for-

given! Participants and planners enjoyed great food and refreshments; music by the Praise Band from St. Paul, Calhan; group hymn sings that includ-

ed songs of faith and forgiveness; and we got to

“shop” at a table full of treasures of yesteryear. Then, as is customary, we wrapped up our day to-

gether with a communion and worship time. How

blessed are we to have this faithful fellowship of women that can gather periodically through the year. Thanks sincerely to the multiple ladies to put much time into this Spring Gathering. If you had to miss this time around, plan to join our next event to be held in Cheyenne Wyoming.

In September 2016, we will elect 2 voting members to the 2017 Triennial Convention of the Church-

wide Women of the ELCA. This Tenth Triennial Con-

vention will be held in Minneapolis, MN, July 10-12, 2017.

Why are we electing voting members (former-ly called delegates) in 2016? Because all voting members must be elected at a synodical conven-

tion that precedes November 30, 2016, which is the deadline for reporting voting member elections. Who can be elected as a voting member? A vot-

ing member must be a member of an ELCA con-

gregation within our Rocky Mountain synod and a participant in an active unit of Women of the ELCA. How does one get nominated? You are elected or appointed by your individual church’s Women of the ELCA unit to be their nominee. There can be only one nomination from each unit, with the ex-

ception that if the SWO President or a Churchwide board member is from that unit, the unit can still elect/appoint a voting member nominee.

• The SWO President and Churchwide board member are automatic voting members by virtue of their position.

How many nominees do we need on the ballot? A minimum of 4 (at least two per voting member position.

Who prepares the ballot of voting member nominees? The SWO Nominating Committee. When is the ballot prepared for the voting mem-bers nominees? In August, 2016.

What criteria needs to be met in the election of the voting members?

• As nearly as possible, at least 10% of the delegation shall be persons of color or

whose primary language is other than English

• At least one-fourth (25%) of the voting members shall be women attending the convention as voting members for the first time

• Women are Ineligible to be elected if have served as a Triennial Convention voting member for the RM Synod Women in the last six (6) years

Can nominations come from the floor at the con-vention? Yes, but floor nominee names are limited to those who were nominated by their individual church unit and weren’t on the ballot prepared by the SWO Nominating Committee. What do the Triennial Voting Members do at the Triennial Convention? The voting members hear

reports, vote on Churchwide officers and board members, approve the Churchwide budget, vote on Memorials and Resolutions and Constitutional changes brought forward as business of the Con-

vention. The Triennial Convention is the highest authority of the Churchwide Women of the ELCA. Besides the business of the Triennial Convention, they network and fellowship with other women from across our entire Women of the ELCA and have a lot of FUN! Who pays for the transportation and housing to attend the Convention? The voting members’ expenses are paid for Churchwide Women of the ELCA.If voting members want to attend the 2017 Tri-ennial Gathering following the Convention, who pays for those expenses? The voting member is

responsible for the Triennial Gathering registration and any associated housing/meal expenses follow-

ing the close of the Convention.

RESOLUTIONS

• Business is brought before the assembly by a motion made by a member. The only motion whose introduction brings business before the assembly is a main motion.

• A Resolution is a main motion, but in written form and used for more important or complex when greater formality is desired. Some organizational rules require main motions be presented in Resolution form.

• Only one main motion or resolution can be considered at any one time.

• Once a main motion is before the assembly (after the chair has stated the question), it must be adopted or rejected by a vote, or the assembly must take action disposing of it in some other way (refer to the enclosed Classification of Motions sheet.)

• When it is desirable to include brief statements of background or reasons in a main motion, they are incorporated in a preamble which is placed before the resolving clauses of the resolution. A preamble consists of one or more clauses beginning “Whereas.” Preambles are used to provide little-known information without which the point of the resolution is likely to be poorly understood.

• Resolutions with preamble(s) are written in this form:

Whereas, The … [text of the preamble]; and,

Whereas, The … [text of the preamble]; now,

Therefore, be it

Resolved, That … [stating action to be taken].

• In the consideration of a resolution having a preamble, the preamble is always amended last, since changes in the resolving clauses may require changes in the preamble.

***************

Deadline for Resolutions for this Convention is September 17, 2016.

Prepare Resolutions with the following guidelines in mind:

X Motions should in no way conflict with the Women of the ELCA Constitution or Bylaws.

X Resolutions should focus on Prayer, Listening, and Learning. Subjects which Clusters and Congregational Units are able to put into feasible operation, (e.g., praying for women of Sudan and Madagascar, etc.).

X Avoid highly charged topics.

Provide Resolutions to: Committee on the Reference and Council at Convention before the first business meeting.

By Susan Mitchell

In May, I was invited to attend a training for Synodical Women’s Organization Treasurers, which was held in Chicago. Staff from our WELCA Churchwide Office were there to give power point presentations, lead discussion, and provide a welcoming learning environment. All travel and lodging expenses were covered by Churchwide, and approximately 15 of the SWO treasurers were there for two days. One of the important topics covered was the insurance coverage that we are provided

whenever women travel to events in their Synodical Women’s Organization. We pay a small premium of ten cents per person per day to receive this coverage. For example, if 50 women

attend a Gathering or a Cluster Event for 2 days, your synodical treasurer sends a $10 premium to WELCA Churchwide. Another benefit of being under the umbrella of the Churchwide WELCA Organization is that unit treasurers and synodical treasurers are bonded for the financial work they provide.

Audrey Riley gave a talk about stewardship, which is one of the things Women of the ELCA is known for in the church. She stressed the Katie’s Fund Endowment, and we learned all the ways this honors Katharina von Bora Luther’s life of faith. The Fund supports global connections, leader- ship development and living theology. Continue Katie’s legacy! Go to: welca.org/katiesfund

Hello From Your RMSWO Treasurer!

Here’s a gentle reminder that every unit in the Rocky Mountain Synodical Women’s Organization is encouraged to send (annually) a donation of $1 per active woman to the synodical treasurer for the Biennial Convention Travel Equalization Fund. Please mail your check to: Susan Mitchell, Treasurer, 2990 Long Bow Loop, Las Cruces, New Mexico 88011.

This year the Convention Planning Committee se-

lected Sarah’s Home, the new continuing educa-

tion scholarship fund, and support of the Rocky Mountain Synodical Women’s Organization of the Women of the ELCA through Congregational Unit offerings. The offerings will be taken each day of the Convention or you can write one check to cov-

er any or all of these opportunities. Sarah’s Home is both a home and school for young women who were rescued from human trafficking.

Send Your Unit Travel Equalization DonationsThis pool of money will be used to help units with the travel expenses that their voting member incurs for the September 16-18, 2016, Convention at St. Paul’s in Cheyenne. If your unit has contributed to the Fund, you’ll be able to request a proportional share at the convention when the voting member is checked in at

registration.

About our logo The joyful, organic shape of a butterfly—or is it a flower? —represents transformation and growth. Splashes of color honoring the four elements (earth, water, fire, air) spill outside the lines to create an uplifting symbol that is bright, bold and vibrant.

The website of the Rocky Mountain Synodical

Women‘s Organization has not only this newslet-

ter but more information about what is going on

now, what has happened in

the past, and what to look to in the future. Kent Mueller at the synod office has kindly kept the site updated. We will keep new, interesting in-

We encourage every woman in the Rocky Moun-

tain Synod to sign up to receive the weekly Synod

Newsletter called e-Connection. It is sent out every

Wednesday to your e-mail address, and it contains

articles and pictures about many things in our lives

together as Lutherans living in the states that make

up the Rocky Mountain Synod.

Once a quarter, e-Connection will have an article

about the current issue of our “Views from the

Rockies”—the newsletter of the RMS Women’s Or-

ganization. You will be directed to the Synod web-

site, which is where “Views” issues will be avail-

able. You may read them online, and you may also

print a copy for your personal use. Ask your church

office to print the Views for you if you do not have access to the website.

Please sign up as follows:

1. On your computer, go to the Rocky Mountain

Synod website by putting this URL into your

browser: www.rmselca.org

2. On the home page, scroll down to the bottom,

and in the middle of the page you will see:

Subscribe to Email Newsletter. Below that

line is a yellow rectangle that says Email List.

Simply click on the yellow rectangle! This

takes you to a page that asks for your Email

Address, your first & last name, and to check a box stating if you are a Pastor, Associate in

Ministry, Diaconal Minister, or Deaconess.

Below this you should check the box that

states: “I wish to receive e-Connection each

week.”

3. Finally, click on the bottom bar that says

“Sign Up.” That’s it! Remember, this is a

free subscription to the synod Email weekly

newsletter. You will receive notice of

new issues of our Views from the Rockies

newsletters from the synod’s e-Connection

Email.
