Southeast Delco Students Receive Two Awards  In Delaware County MathCounts Competition On  Saturday,  February  1st,  Southeast  Delco  Middle  School 

students  participated  in  their  first  ever  Delaware  County 

MathCounts  Competition  and  brought  home  two  awards.  

MathCounts  is  a  national  mathematics  competition  and 

Southeast Delco  students worked very hard preparing  for  this 

regional  event.  Students  from  public  and  private  schools  in 

Delaware County competed in this annual math challenge.  

The Southeast Delco team received an award for being the best 

new  school  in  the  competition  and 7th  grade Darby  Township 

student,  Tommy  Jamack,  received  the  prestigious  Bill 

Scattergood  Spirit Award.  The Bill  Scattergood  Spirit Award  is 

presented  to  a  Delaware  County  student  who  embodies  the  traits  of  creativity,  originality,  inventiveness, 

and problem‐solving that make mathematics an essential cornerstone of academics.    

MathCounts  coaches,  Colleen  DiMaggio  and  Betty  Schellinger,  are  very  proud  of  the  teams’  inaugural  effort.  

Darby Township Assistant Principal Damon Wade was also present to support the team. Congratulations to all of 

our MathCounts participants: Khalil Harrington (Captain), Kaylah Harley, Devin Humphrey, Malcom Bevans, Jeffrey 

DeLuca, Maureen Servien, Tommy Jamack, Chris Basile, Aisha Conteh, and Devin Thompson.  

District Middle School Science Fair If you happened into the auditorium at Academy Park on 

Tuesday, January 28th, you would have been surprised to 

see  not  a  group  of  high  school  students  perhaps 

practicing  for  a  future  play  or  musical  but  rather  a 

gathering  of  the  finest  scientific  minds  in  the  district.  

This  was  a  gathering  for  the  District  Annual  Middle 

School Science Fair. Students in grades 6 ‐ 8 representing 

Darby Township, Delcroft, Harris, and Sharon Hill Schools 

competed  against  one  another  to  be  crowned  top

scientist.   In order for students to earn a spot at the District Fair, each elementary building held  its own science 

fair  to determine  the  top  three students  in each grade.   Those students  then  traveled  to Academy Part  to  face 

their competition.   

Upon arrival the students set up their projects on the stage and then sat down to wait their turn to be called by 

the judges.   Our panel of judges was comprised of retired teachers, science students from Drexel University and 

Widener University, a professor from Widener, and a former curriculum director.  The judges first reviewed each 

of the projects and then called students up to do their presentations. While many of the students indicated that 

they were nervous about the presentations, all of the  judges were greatly  impressed with the way the students 

spoke about their projects and how knowledgeable they were.  After scoring the projects and presentations, the 

judges  narrowed  down  their  choices  for  the  top  three  in  each  grade.    Dr.  Stephen  Butz  then  presented  the 

students with medals.

Heinz Refuge Groundhog Day Art Contest Finalists Four district students were selected as finalists in the art contest component of the annual Groundhog Day Family 

Festival.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Heinz Refuge, this year’s celebration had 772 entries from 27 

participating schools.

Mr. Walt Jennings, Chairman of the Groundhog Day Art Committee stated, “Not only did we receive a large 

number of entries from Darby Township, Delcroft, and Harris Schools, but the quality of the work from these 

three schools was commendable. One of the fifteen middle school finalists was from Southeast Delco and three of 

the fifteen elementary finalists were from your schools.”  

We are proud to present the Southeast Delco Groundhog Day Art Contest finalists:

Three of the finalists are students of Delcroft School’s art teacher, Ms. Amber Hiltner. The artwork of all of the 

finalists is on display at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. 

Academy Park High School Making Lemonade In a recent survey, students were asked what motivated them to excel in school, what drove them to do well and 

perform to the best of their ability.  Several cited conventional aspirations like the desire to go to college or get a 

well‐paying  job. Many  simply wanted  to make  their  parents  proud.  But  for  one Academy  Park  student, what 

motivates him to be successful is rather unique ‐ his sister.  

In 2012, this student’s older sister became  involved  in a situation that resulted  in her  imprisonment. Since that 

time,  brother  and  sister  have  communicated  almost  weekly  with messages  of  support  for  one  another  and 

cautions from her to be vigilant and mindful of his actions and associations.  

Sometimes  the most profound  incentives  come  from  the most unexpected places. This  student has  taken  the 

worst of circumstances and used them to create the best of outcomes. His grades and attendance have improved 

and come this spring, what was considered unlikely a short time ago, is now a distinct possibility: graduation!

Darby Township School  The Weather Outside is Frightful! January brought  in extreme cold weather along with  some unexpected days off  from  school because of  snow. 

Students returned to school expressing that although they enjoyed playing in the snow they did not like the cold. 

Darby Township School held  its annual Science Fair on  January 27th and  the winners participated  in  the District 

Science Fair  that was held on  January 28th at Academy Park High School. Two of our  students made us  “DTS” 

proud – Elijah Hamm who placed 2nd for the 6th grade and Justin Anderson who placed 1st for the 8th grade.

Delcroft School One Honey of a Spelling Bee Delcroft School held their annual Scripps Spelling Bee on January 9th.  

Middle  school  students  were  given  a  qualifying  exam  and  sixteen 

students in grades 6, 7, and 8 were eligible to participate in this year’s 

event.    Qualifying  students  were  provided  a  preparation  guide  to 

study  in  anticipation  of  this  year’s  competition.   Delcroft’s  1st  place 

winner was  Laela  Clark  and  Isis  Sueksagan  captured  2ndplace.    Both 

students are in the 7th grade and will attend the county‐wide Spelling 

Bee this spring.  The students and staff of Delcroft School are grateful 

to Dr. Monica Watson and Dr. Stephen Butz for serving as judges.    

Delcroft School Science Fair     Delcroft School’s Middle School Science Fair was held on January 27th.  

Students were  chosen  to  participate  from  grades  6,  7,  and  8  based 

upon  qualifying  factors.    Each  student  participating  in  the  fair 

presented their projects to the  judges.   First, second, and third place 

winners were chosen from each grade level.

Delcroft winners  from grade 6 were: 1st place Amy Dao, 2nd place Trevon  Scott, and 3rd place David Peterson.  

Winners from grade 7: 1st place Sara Dalah, 2nd place Kayla Carr, and 3rd place David Periera. Grade 8 winners: 1st 

place Justin McGowan, 2nd place Breanna Kerr, and 3rd place Isaiah Abiola.  All Delcroft School winners traveled to 

Academy Park High School on January 28th to participate in the District‐wide Science Fair.

Harris School Bees Buzz Harris School held its annual Spelling Bee on January 6th in the old gym.  Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 vied for the 

opportunity to represent Harris School at the county‐wide Spelling Bee where the best spellers from schools all 

across the county will gather to compete. This year’s contest was hard fought, with students going head to head 

for 25  rounds before a winner was determined.   After  the dust settled,  the 1st place victory went  to 8th grader 

Marcus McBurrows, 2nd place to Charles Arterbury, and 3rd place to Shara Lighter.  

All participants studied and worked hard  in preparation  for  the contest. Everyone  involved should be proud of 

their effort and we are hopeful that our 1st place winner Marcus McBurrows will bring  the County Spelling Bee 

title home to Harris School.

Spelling Bee Winnrs  Geography Bee Winners 

Harris students competed  in another annual “Bee” this one for Geography. Again, students studied and worked 

hard in preparation for the competition. Our top three competitors were 7th grader Jonathan Williams in 3rd place; 

2nd place went to 7th grader Devin Page, and the 1st place winner was 8th grader Jenaye Johnson. The next step is 

to compete at the State level, for which Jenaye had to take a written test to determine her eligibility.  Whether or 

not she makes  it to the State competition, Jenaye  is a great all around student who sets a positive example for 

other students to follow.  

Science Fair Success The Harris Science Fair was held on  January 14th  in  the 

library under  the direction of 8th grade Science  teacher 

Rachael Kelly. The students  in 7th and 8th grade worked 

hard on their projects, which made it difficult to choose 

the winners. The task of deciding on the winners was up 

to  judges  Jeffrey  Ryan,  Dr.  Monica  Watson,  Tom 

Haupert, and Allyson Zelewski.   

Harris  winners  from  grade  7  are  1st  place  Nidia 

Robinson, 2nd place  Jazmine Hammond, 3rd place  Jenna 

Newcomb, 4th place Victoria Natale, 5th place Chris Pyfer, 

and 6th place Walter Wright. Winners  form grade 8 are 

1st place Jenaye Johnson, 2nd place Daniel Coleman Jr., 3rd place Calean Daley, 4th place Alejae Johnson, 5th place 

Krysten Brown, and 6th place Jalia Kombe‐Kajue.  

Overall, Harris students did a great job with the science fair and their efforts were rewarded at the district‐level 

competition.

Sharon Hill School Middle School Science Fair Sharon Hill School held  its middle school Science Fair on January 16th. Students  in grades 6, 7, and 8 worked on 

their  projects  since  the  beginning  of  the  school  year.    Student members  of  the  Rising  Scholars  program  at 

Academy  Park  served  as  judges.    Sixth  grade  student  Glister  Threadgill  won  1st  place  and  his  sister,  Sarai 

Threadgill, 8th grade, placed 3rd. Winners from the school fair then participated in the District Science Fair. 

 

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sharon Hill School and community honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by taking part in several academic activities 

that centered on the life and legacy of the great civil rights leader. Students were educated and reminded about 

how Dr. King influenced history and civil rights by reading different literature and completing several writing 

activities about his life.

Kindergarten Center Day of Service Middle school students from Darby Township School visited the Kindergarten Center and read to students as part 

of a day of service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Kindergarten students were very excited to meet new 

“big kids” and learn about the dream Dr. King had for our country.
